25 MCAA STUDENT CHAPTERS COMPETE IN 2012-2013 STUDENT CHAPTER COMPETITION
MCAA student chapters at colleges and universities across the U.S. and in Canada submitted bid proposals to MCAA's 2012-2013 Student Chapter Competition. This year, the project involved a 50,000 square-foot building that houses the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Space Exploration Center. The facility is located near Cape Canaveral, FL, and bidders were required to recommend design elements that meet or exceed LEED Platinum criteria. The project also required that the bids include a post-construction service component. Chapters that submitted proposals were from: California State Polytechnic University at Pomona, California State Polytechnic University at San Luis Obispo, California State University at Sacramento, Central Washington University, California State University at Chico, Colorado State University, Fairleigh Dickinson University, Illinois State University, Iowa State University, McMaster University, Milwaukee School of Engineering, Northeastern University, Northern Kentucky University, Oregon State University, Pennsylvania State University, Pittsburg State University, Purdue University, Southern Polytechnic State University, University of Maryland-College Park, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, University of Washington, University of Wisconsin-Stout, Washington State University, Weber State University and the Wentworth Institute of Technology. Judges of the competition's first round were drawn from MCAA's Career Development Committee. They will meet on January 9 to evaluate all the proposals and choose the top four best scoring bids to compete in the final round on March 19, 2013 at MCAA 2013 in San Antonio, TX. Find out more about MCAA's Student Chapter Program by contacting Ann Mattheis (amattheis@mcaa.org).
BIM CAN HELP YOUR BUSINESS GROW...IF YOU KNOW HOW TO MAKE IT WORK FOR YOU
Building Information Modeling (BIM) has arrived and has made its mark on the construction industry. It can help make projects run more efficiently and smoothly, but you need to know how it works to make it work well for you. MCAA's National Education Initiative (NEI) is making it possible for you to learn vital information about BIM through five new courses under its new BIM for Mechanical Contractors series that will be available to local affiliates and individual contractors. Pete Mackenzie (recently retired from Mechanical Inc., Freeport, IL) will be the lead instructor and coordinator for the new series. The new courses are: Kick Starting BIM Because You Must, Getting the Most from BIM Project Execution Plans, Implementing and Managing the BIM Process Within Your Organization, It's All in the Details: Understanding, Staffing and Training BIM Detailers and BIM Risk Management and Avoidance. To schedule a course in your area, contact Pete MacKenzie (pmackenzie@mcaa.org). Course descriptions and scheduling information are at www.mcaa.org/nei/bim.

MSCA's SELLING EFFICIENCY EFFECTIVELY PROGRAM WILL HELP CLOSE THE SALE ON EFFICIENCY PROJECTS

Each year, countless worthwhile energy-saving proposals - many of which are the products of costly engineering studies-languish unfunded. Why? Single-minded contractors focus on identifying the nuts and bolts of how the building's energy-consuming systems could be improved without taking the time to ask questions like, "Who actually decides whether or not this upgrade will get approved, and what factors ultimately determine whether or not a project gets funded?" MSCA's Selling Efficiency Effectively program will guide mechanical service contractors through the in's and out's of what it takes to close the sale on their efficiency projects. Mark Jewell, a nationally recognized expert focused on applying energy efficiency to create value, will lead this program, which takes place February 28-March 1, 2013 in Baltimore, MD).
