MCAA National Update for October 22, 2012

NCPWB ISSUES SURVEY ON ASME HIGH ENERGY PIPING PROPOSAL

The ASME B31.1 committee is considering requiring that contractors who fabricate and install "high energy piping"-such as main steam, hot reheat, feedwater (very high pressure and high temperature piping)-obtain a "Code Stamp" to perform that work. To assist NCPWB members who serve on the ASME committee, NCPWB is requesting that MCAA members respond to the following survey:

  1. Do you install ASME B31.1 piping?
  2. If so, do you install "high energy piping" as described above?
  3. Do you hold an ASME Code Stamp for working on boilers and related piping (S, A or a PP stamp)?
  4. Do you hold an ASME Code Stamp for doing other ASME Code work (U-type, N-type, Valve-type)?
  5. Do you hold a National Board R-Stamp?
  6. Are you in favor of requiring those who fabricate and install "high energy piping" to have an ASME Code Stamp which would involve having the work overseen by a Code Inspector, like Hartford Steam Boiler, and having a formal quality control program which would be subject to an ASME audit every three years?

Please e-mail your response to Nick Nikpourfard at nnikpourfard@mcaa.org. You may reference only the question letter in your response (for example, "A - No").

REGISTERED YET FOR NEXT QUALIFIED-LEVEL ARC FLASH SAFETY TRAINING WEBINAR?
If you or your staff were unable to participate in the previous NFPA 70E Qualified-Level Arc Flash Safety Training webinars, two more opportunities are coming up on October 30 at 8:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Eastern time. This webinar is designed for MCAA/MSCA members' employees who are potentially exposed to live conductors of 50 volts of electricity or more during their workday and is ideal for mechanical service technicians working on units that push 480 volts or less. Presented by the Hilgeman Group, the session covers all OSHA and NFPA requirements, best practices and NFPA's recent changes to the 70E requirements and provides participants with real-world accident information that will reinforce the importance of this training. All participants will receive customized training certificates. This training is available at a special rate for MCAA/MSCA members and, most important, could save lives. Register today at ahilgeman@frontier.com.
NEXT GREEN WEBINAR FOCUSES ON WATER EFFICIENCY ON LEED 2012 PROJECTS
As part of the LEED 2012 Update, the Water Efficiency component has been substantially revised. MCAA's next Green Webinar, co-sponsored by the Plumbing Contractors of America (PCA), will cover new credits, major changes and how these updates will affect plumbing and mechanical contractors. Matt Gregg, PE, LEED AP of the McKinstry Company (Seattle, WA) will lead the session, which takes place November 15, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. Eastern time. Registration is free as a benefit of MCAA membership; please sign up at https://mcaa.webex.com/.
