Corrales International School February 2015
Kids in Class CIS
CIS Family,

On Monday, March 9th we will begin PARCC testing at CIS for grades 3-11.   The PARCC assessments are new tests mandated by Federal law.  While some schools and teachers may see this mandated test as a challenge, we see it as an opportunity.  You can find more information about this test at http://www.parcconlineorg/.

CIS students generally do well on standardized tests.  This is a reflection on CIS students' and teachers' hard work and enthusiasm for the IB philosophy of learning and teaching.  IB emphasizes the development of critical thinking skills and deeper learning over fact acquisition and memorization. The PARCC test's focus on analysis and critical thinking in student learning presents an exciting opportunity for CIS students to rise to the challenge!  We are very proud of our creative and hard-working students and teachers and feel confident our students will do well.

One of the concerns from schools and teachers is the time taken away from teaching and learning during the PARCC testing.   We refuse to take time away from teaching and learning.  Therefore, CIS has opted to offer the paper-based exams to our students instead of the computer-based version.  Our students in grades 3rd - 11th, will take only one assessment a day, spending less than 1 hour and 30 minutes per day.   Students requiring more time will be provided extra time.  These options were chosen to minimize disruption to student schedules and maximize intact instructional time during the testing cycle.

Are students required to take the PARCC assessment in grades 3rd - 11th?

The short answer is YES.   Federal law does require that 95% of our students participate in the assessment.  Failure to reach the 95% threshold will result in our rating (school grade) being dropped one letter grade.  Our reputation for high expectations and high student achievement paves the way for current and future student success and in some cases federal funding.  Unfortunately, parent/student refusals to take the test could, jeopardize that hard earned reputation.

As a charter school we appreciate the importance of parent involvement and choice in education (and in fact, rely on it!)  We hope that you will trust CIS to balance the demands of testing and the instructional needs of our students appropriately.

All testing will begin at with a Snack and Relaxation block at 8:45 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. All students in grades 3rd to 11th grade will test from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.  Time will be extended for students requiring additional time.

We believe that the PARCC is a rigorous assessment of student performance against the academic standards (Common Core) which our students have been far exceeding since the inception of our charter.  If you have questions regarding the PARCC assessments, please contact our Test Coordinator, Sheley Wimmer directly at wimmers@corralesis.org.

Open-minded

Open-minded individuals understand and appreciate their own cultures and personal histories, and are open to the perspectives, values and traditions of other individuals and communities. They are accustomed to seeking and evaluating a range of points of view, and are willing to grow from the experience.

Activities for parents

* Encourage your child to try out new things-new food, new games and new activities.

* Expose your child to different festivals, celebrations and traditions and be sure to present them in a non-judgmental way

* Encourage your child to really listen to others when they speak.

CITY LIBRARY ACCESS AT CIS

In order for our students to access the city library databases and other awesome resources we would like all CIS students to have a library card and pin.  If your child already has theirs, please fill out the information on this form so that our teachers can help students access the databases while researching in our computer lab.  Thank you!

The New Mexico State Library now provides a free statewide access to online tutoring. It is now possible for our students to obtain homework help, study tips and even career assistance by visiting the New Mexico State Library online. The state's Department of Cultural Affairs has purchased a statewide subscription to Brainfuse, which is an online tutoring and educational portal. This portal will be accessible through the public libraries. Site coordinators should therefore encourage students to visit www.elportalnm.org for assignment purposes.  Brainfuse tutoring portal is available on this website. This program provides exceptional services as it specializes in one-to-one tutoring, study skills-building and career assistance through its HelpNow and JobNow services. It gives opportunities to Elementary School, Middle School and High School students to carry out research. Through the Brainfuse HELPNOW program, tutors are available every day from 2:00 PM - 11:00 PM MST to help students answer questions. Thank you.

EXCITING VISIT

CIS will have a visit from the Young Americans this Wednesday at 830 am! "The Young Americans is dedicated to the promotion of understanding and goodwill among people throughout the world through music, dance, performance, academic education and cultural interaction among student members and their audiences." We will have a whole school assembly so that all CIS students can learn more about this amazing group. Parents are invited to attend! You can learn more about them at http://www.youngamericans.org/

FROM THE HEALTH OFFICE

The CIS Health Office is following the guidelines, procedures, and policies as directed from APS and the New Mexico Dept. of Health regarding the current Measles outbreak.  The Health Office will contact you if your student is out of compliance with immunizations. If you have further questions or concerns regarding your student please contact the School Nurse.  We are dedicated in providing a safe & healthy learning environment for your student.
