NEWS FROM CIS: Welcome back information and upcoming events.

 CORRALES
INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL

January 19, 2015
Dear CIS Family,

I hope you were all able to have some nice family time for this Martin Luther King Jr holiday and spent some time reflecting on the progress our great nation has made since the time of Dr. King and how powerful the contributions that individuals can make to the lives of many.

"Life's most persistent and urgent question is 'What are you doing for others'"--Dr. Martin Luther King
=========================================

Even with the interruptions caused by inclement weather last week, our students were able to make significant progress on the MAPs tests. The upcoming week will see some make-ups as well as the regularly scheduled testing as noted in our school calendar on the website.

Please see the calendar for when your child's class is scheduled to test.  Miss Patti will be accepting bulk items for snack to be distributed to testing students.  Please bring fruit, veggie and other healthy snacks!

Sincerely,

Dr. Elsy Diaz

As you know, Corrales International School observes preference for any sibling. We want to make sure that these spaces are reserved and not offered as Lottery Openings. Please take the time to complete this form and advise us of your enrollment status for the 2015-2016 School Year no later than January 24, 2015

Please fill out the Intention to Return Form online and reserve your child's spot at CIS! Click here.

Invitation to MYP Parents

Dear MYP Parents,

Have you ever wondered what your child does all day at school? When you ask, do you get generic one word responses like "nothing" or "stuff"?

Well the CIS MYP staff would like to invite you to come see how your child spends his/her day. By visiting your child's classes, you will get to know what International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program (IB MYP) teaching and learning is all about, how CIS MYP students behave, and what the academic and behavioral expectations are for our students.

This time investment in our classrooms will count toward the required 3 hours of volunteer time for parents!

You are welcome to stay for just a class or follow your son or daughter through all of their 6 class periods. If this school visit interests you, please e-mail Mr. Ripp at rippj@corralesis.org to set up a time and date. We're looking forward to seeing you.

Sincerely,

Mr. Ripp

No Cell Phones Please
Students are not allowed to possess cell phones and/or other electronic devices during school hours.  With permission from Dr. Diaz, students can check their devices into the front desk in the morning and retrieve them after school.  Cell phones and electronic devices will be confiscated and returned only to the student's parent/guardians. Students repeatedly violating this school policy will serve Wednesday, 7:00 a.m. detention.

We believe that we have plenty of phones (one per classroom) that students may ask permission to use.   If there are extenuating circumstances and you think your student needs to have a cell phone, please contact Dr. Diaz (344-9733 or diaz@corralesis.org).

IB LEARNER PROFILE

Communicators understand and express ideas and information confidently and creatively in more than one language and in a variety of modes of communication.  They work effectively and willingly in collaboration with others.

You can help your child at home to learn this profile by:

  • Encouraging your child to stay in touch with relatives and friends who live in other countries by writing letters, using the phone or sending email.
  • Encouraging your child to explain his/her answers to you orally or by drawing a picture.
  • Working with your child to improve his/her listening skills.
  • Being a good listener is an important part of communicating with others.

PURCHASE OUR BUILDING

Greetings from the CIS Foundation!

The CIS Foundation was formed to raise funds to support our fabulous school and it's mission. Our current board consists of co-chairs John Perea and Anna Prewitt, vice president John McCall, treasurer Raj Shethia, Carl Grending and George Bachand as well as committee chairs, we meet every third Thursday of the month, and always welcome parents and interested community members. If you have unique experience, enthusiasm for the mission, or are just curious about how you can help please join us at any meeting or contact one of our board members.
The most pressing issue facing our school at the moment is the purchase of our fabulous building. Now that we are in our new home, we must pay for it. As Dr. Diaz has communicated already, the very existence of our school is in jeopardy if we do not fulfill our requirement to be in a publicly owned building by our charter renewal date in 2017.
There are many ways to help make the goal of purchasing our building a reality. Thank you to the many families who have purchased their commemorative brick, parents and teachers who donate monthly through United Way, or in the case of the Taylor family, asked for donations to the school in lieu of Christmas presents from family. If each family in our school committed to raising $451 per year, our goal will be met. Please take a moment to reflect on what your child's education is worth to you, as we kick off our spring fundraising drive. More information will be mailed out to each family, please look for it in your mailbox.

Sincerely,
Anna Prewitt &
John Perea

We can do this!
Some of the $700,000 will be raised through the use of SB9 CapitalOutlay Funds designated for our school from the state. Approximately$200,000 in the next four years will be generated for our school.  Add to this amount a donation from our current owner of this building of approximately $75,000 towards the purchase of the building.  Therefore as a school community we need to work with the CIS Foundation to raise approximately $425,000 in four years.  This translates to a fundraising goal of $107,000 per year.

Together We Can Do This!

This is how you can help raise $107,000 per year to purchase this building:

1.Make a tax-deductible donation to the CIS Foundation Tax ID#: 03-2177700-00-4
a. This can be done directly by making a donation to the CIS Foundation.
b. Through your employment other direct method through United Way.

2. Solicit donations from businesses or family members all of which are tax-deductible CIS  Foundation Tax ID#: 03-2177700-00-4. Please contact diaz@corralesis.org if you would like a letter to donors!

3. Purchase a brick or two to commemorate your family, student, or loved one.  Bricks will be used to build a CIS Journey wall and pathway.  BrickRUs site https://www.bricksrus.com/order/cis/index.php

4. Target REDcard Take Charge of Education Program, with a Target REDcard, you can go to their site https://www.secure.target.com/redcard/tcoe/home and register your card. A percentage of all sales will go to CIS. Our school membership code is 148643.

While this may sound like a large amount to raise, monthly or yearly gifts from friends and family can help us reach our goal.
Take a look at the following chart and see how the donations can add up.

Many of you have stated how proud you are of our work.  Our extensive waiting list attest to your confidence in us in educating your children. Please help us continue our momentum and meeting our fundraising goal of $700,000 to purchase this beautiful facility for our students.

Some great examples set by members of our community are to ask friends and family to write a check or BUY A BRICK for CIS in lieu of a birthday present, donate to the Corrales International School Foundation through the United Way as soon as possible, or ask businesses that you have a connection with to donate to our amazing school.

Our CIS FOUNDATION is lead by parents just like you who need your help and suggestions.  Please consider attending a CIS Foundation Meeting or email one of these fabulous parents.

CIS is in existence and will continue to be in existence because of the hard work and generosity of parents and staff working together. This is an exciting time for our school as we take the next natural step in owning our own building. We hope that we can continue to count your support!

Respectfully,

Dr. Elsy Diaz
