HAPPY 2015!
Feliz Aņo Nuevo!

We hope that you had a wonderfully restful and joyful winter break and our students will be returning to school rejuvenated and ready to learn!

I hope everyone stayed nice and warm this weekend.  Winter is definitely in the air and temperatures will be pretty cold this week.  Please make sure your students bring weather appropriate clothing to school, especially a heavy coat or jacket.

As we begin the new school year, we will continue our work in teaching your amazing children and our work as a school community to raise funds to purchase our beautiful new building. For those of you new to our school, we are leasing this building and we have approximately 4 years to purchase the building.

Please read the information below to stay up-to-date on our progress on these two important issues.

Wishing you all a joyful and discovery-filled 2015!

No Cell Phones Please
As you all know we have a no cell phone and no electronic devices use policy at school. We have allowed cell phones to come to school if the students maintain them in their backpacks.

Unfortunately many students have not kept the cell phones in their backpacks and we have had repeated offenses of inappropriate materials shared with other students.

Though we have provided disciplinary action against those students that have violated the rules, it continues to consume instructional and administrative time ensuring that all students keep their cell phones in their backpacks.

Therefore, cellphones will no longer allowed in school not even in backpacks.  Cell phones and electronic devices will be confiscated and returned only to the student's parent/guardians. Students repeatedly violating this school policy will serve Wednesday, 7:00 a.m. detention.

We believe that we have plenty of phones (one per classroom) that students may ask permission to use.   If there are extenuating circumstances and you think your student needs to have a cell phone, please contact Dr. Diaz (344-9733 or diaz@corralesis.org).

THANK YOU TO ALL OUR WONDERFUL TEACHERS, STAFF, PARENTS, AND STUDENTS WHO MADE OUR WINTER PROGRAM A HUGE SUCCESS!

Special thanks go to Ms. Amy Hughes and Ms. Courtney Giannini!
IB LEARNER PROFILE

Communicators understand and express ideas and information confidently and creatively in more than one language and in a variety of modes of communication.  They work effectively and willingly in collaboration with others.

You can help your child at home to learn this profile by:

  • Encouraging your child to stay in touch with relatives and friends who live in other countries by writing letters, using the phone or sending email.
  • Encouraging your child to explain his/her answers to you orally or by drawing a picture.
  • Working with your child to improve his/her listening skills.
  • Being a good listener is an important part of communicating with others.

PURCHASE OUR BUILDING

We began our 2014-15 school year in this beautiful new building! Now that we have settled in we need to continue our work as a school community to purchase this building.   As families of CIS, we are all members of our CIS Foundation and it is by working together as a community that we will achieve this goal.  TO PURCHASE OUR BUILDING.

To Recap:

Our school budget nor the CIS Foundation budget have enough funds to provide a down payment to purchase this new builidng. Therefore our CIS Governing Council signed a Lease with an Option to Buy agreement. This agreement offers us the opportunity to purchase the building within a four year period. Within the next four years we need to come up with approximately $700,000 to secure purchase of this building. Until then, we will lease the building for approximately $30,000 per month. So it is definitely to our benefit to purchase the building as soon as possible since our payments on the loan will be less than lease payments.

As a charter school we are required to be in a publicly owned building by our next renewal year, 2017.   THIS BUILDING helps us fulfill the CIS mission, with space to continue to grow inquiry and global understanding in our community's children!

We can do this!
Some of the $700,000 will be raised through the use of SB9 CapitalOutlay Funds designated for our school from the state. Approximately$200,000 in the next four years will be generated for our school.  Add to this amount a donation from our current owner of this building of approximately $75,000 towards the purchase of the building.  Therefore as a school community we need to work with the CIS Foundation to raise approximately $425,000 in four years.  This translates to a fundraising goal of $107,000 per year.

Together We Can Do This!

This is how you can help raise $107,000 per year to purchase this building:

1.Make a tax-deductible donation to the CIS Foundation Tax ID#: 03-2177700-00-4
a. This can be done directly by making a donation to the CIS Foundation.
b. Through your employment other direct method through United Way.

2. Solicit donations from businesses or family members all of which are tax-deductible CIS  Foundation Tax ID#: 03-2177700-00-4. Please contact diaz@corralesis.org if you would like a letter to donors!

3. Purchase a brick or two to commemorate your family, student, or loved one.  Bricks will be used to build a CIS Journey wall and pathway.  BrickRUs site https://www.bricksrus.com/order/cis/index.php

4. Target REDcard Take Charge of Education Program, with a Target REDcard, you can go to their site https://www.secure.target.com/redcard/tcoe/home and register your card. A percentage of all sales will go to CIS. Our school membership code is 148643.

While this may sound like a large amount to raise, monthly or yearly gifts from friends and family can help us reach our goal.
Take a look at the following chart and see how the donations can add up.

Many of you have stated how proud you are of our work.  Our extensive waiting list attest to your confidence in us in educating your children. Please help us continue our momentum and meeting our fundraising goal of $700,000 to purchase this beautiful facility for our students.

Some great examples set by members of our community are to ask friends and family to write a check or BUY A BRICK for CIS in lieu of a birthday present, donate to the Corrales International School Foundation through the United Way as soon as possible, or ask businesses that you have a connection with to donate to our amazing school.

Our CIS FOUNDATION is lead by parents just like you who need your help and suggestions.  Please consider attending a CIS Foundation Meeting or email one of these fabulous parents.

CIS is in existence and will continue to be in existence because of the hard work and generosity of parents and staff working together. This is an exciting time for our school as we take the next natural step in owning our own building. We hope that we can continue to count your support!

Respectfully,

Dr. Elsy Diaz
