Kids in Class CIS

Dear CIS Families,

Thanks to all who participated in last week's Balloon Family Fun Day and for being patient with the traffic and our late starts!  We were very pleased with how smoothly the week went by and look forward to this as an annual CIS event!

PLEASE NOTE THIS CORRECTION:

TOMORROW is our MYP (grades 6+) and Staff Picture Day. On Monday, students in grades 6-10 can be out of school uniform (but wearing clothing that meets the standards of our dress code--no short shorts, spaghetti straps, etc). All MYP students will have their pictures taken and proofs will be available from the photographer and families can purchase online based on the proofs chosen.

Tomorrow, all PYP students should be in standard uniform dress. PYP student pictures will be taken on Thursday, October 16th. On that day, PYP students only will be allowed to wear non-uniform clothing that meets the standards of dress articulated in our dress code. All PYP students will have their pictures taken on this day.

October Learner Profile
Caring

They develop empathy, compassion and respect towards the needs and feelings of others. They have a personal commitment to service, and act to make a positive difference to the lives of others and to the environment.

Activities for parents

* Role model the caring behavior you would like to see in your child all the time. Using kind words, helping people without being asked, being an active listener, all show your child that you care about people.

* Smile

* After reading a book, spend some time considering how the people in the book acted. Was someone caring? All of the time or just some of the time? Were all of the characters in the book caring or just some of them?

* Practice random acts of kindness. Simple things like holding the door for someone or helping carry bags shows that you are aware of
others and want to help them.

New Club

We have a new guitar club starting this Wednesday for students in grades 2 and up! Please email Ms. Tara (armijot@corralesis.org) if you are interested in this fee based club.  The fee is $50 per student for a 6 week course.  Subsequent siblings enrolled pay only $25.

Attendance

Tardiness & Absences

We are about to start our 7th week of school. Can you believe how fast that has gone? By now we should be in a routine. Getting back and forth to our new building has been challenging with the construction going on all around us. With that being said, we need to get a handle on the students arriving tardy to school.

We have several students that are arriving tardy on a daily basis. When a student arrives tardy to class, it disrupts the class and they miss valuable instruction time.

We have decided to wipe the slate clean for the first 6 weeks of school. Starting this week, October 13, 2014, when a student accumulates 3 tardies they will receive 1 lunch detention. When they receive 3 lunch detentions, we will call a parent meeting.

  • 3 tardies = 1 lunch detention
  • 3 lunch detentions = parent meeting

Also please remember, according to our Family Handbook, if your child is absent from school, you should call 344-9733 x-3 and report their absence. Leave your name, student's name, REASON for the absence and a phone number where you can be reached. Calls for absences need to be made on the day of the absence. We prefer by 8:30 am. If you do not report your child's absence on the same day, the absence will be unexcused. Each student has a maximum of 10
excused absences per school year. Anything after the 10 will be unexcused.

If the student accumulates 3 unexcused absences, a letter will be sent home. When they reach 4 unexcused absences, Administration will contact the parents. When they reach 5 unexcused absences,
Administration will call a meeting with the parents and report to the Children's Court Liaison Office and the State of New Mexico.

We work hard to make the most of each day with your students. We appreciate your efforts to get your students to school on time daily.

Thank you,

Dawn Jackson

PSAT

Dear Families of our 9th, 10th and 11th grade students:

The Preliminary SAT (PSAT) exam will be administered this fall on Wednesday October 15, 2014 at 1:30 pm. All 9th, 10th, 11th and 12thgrade students are eligible to take this exam that will be administered here at CIS. There is a $14 fee for all students taking the test and 11th graders can apply for a waiver.  There are a limited number of tests available at CIS so please indicate your interest early by contacting me via email: newcomer-millerj@corralesis.org Checks must be made out to CIS and given to me prior to Oct 13, 2014

Below is a bit more information related to the PSAT along with some helpful links. If you have any further questions please feel free to contact me. Most importantly, for 11th graders, the PSAT serves as the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test for students entering college in the fall of 2016.
