Dear CIS Families

This is our week before spring break and I am sure your children are anxious to take a much needed break.  They have worked so hard with testing and completing some amazing projects for the Science Fair and Personal Projects.   Please read the letter below from Anhelica Mendez who is once again helping to raise awareness for an important cause.  Please donate items if you are able to help.

We need to update all our student files and parent contact information, please take the time to click on this link UPDATE INFORMATION to ensure that we have accurate information.

Please don't forget about our Jog-a-thon April 25; Building Preview, April 26; and Kids Triathalon May 17.

JOG-A-THON: APRIL 25
The Jog-A-Thon is our largest fundraiser where families, friends and neighbors pledge money to support the students as they jog or walk in the Jog-A-Thon.  CIS students run (or jog, walk, skip, etc.) laps around our playground.

How do we raise money? Before the day of the Jog-A-Thon, each student obtains pledges and donations in support of his/her Jog-A-Thon efforts. Sponsors may sign up to pledge a flat dollar amount and/or a per lap donation. Our goal is to raise at least $9,000. ALL of the money raised will go back directly into PTA to fund our new playground at our NEW SCHOOL!

BUILDING PREVIEW: APRIL 26

Don't forget that we have our CIS Family Preview on Saturday, April 26th at 9:30 a.m. at the new building 5500 Wilshire Blvd NE Join us to preview the building and share in some light refreshments. This event is sponsored by our CIS Foundation.

KIDS ONLY TRIATHLON: MAY 17
Another major fundraiser  for our school is the Kids only Triathlon sponsored by our CIS Foundation.   This event raises funds for our new school and helps the NM Multiple Sclerosis Foundation.

The second annual Kids's Only Triathlon is for children  ages 3-12  at the Rio Rancho Acquatic Center.  This is a a fun family event that introduces kids to triatholons and helps both our school and the NM Multiple Sclerosis Foundation.  Go to the website below to register your kids. See you there! http://www.kidsonlytri.com

IB LEARNER PROFILE
----Risk-Taker----

The aim of all IB programs is to develop internationally minded people who, recognizing their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world.

IB programs encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right. - from the IBO mission statement.

Risk-takers approach their future and new opportunities with energy and faith in their ability to achieve. They learn how to analyze situations and become more confident and assertive when moving into uncharted territory. Doing so gives IB learners and the people around them courage to stand up for what's right.

Risk-Taker

Students who are RISK-TAKERS have courage to try new things. They try to solve problems in a lot of ways. They have the bravery to tell people what they think is right.

How can parents help to develop students who are Risk-Takers at home?

If your child is feeling uneasy about trying something, encourage them to attempt it and then reflect on both whether they liked the activity and how it felt to try something new.

You child might want to set some short-term goals. Consider activities that make him/her nervous. What are realistic goals for the week? Your child might set a goal to:

  • Offer an opinion in class
  • Spend one recess with someone they might not usually play with
  • Order something different from the lunch menu
  • Try an activity they haven't tried before

Be careful to explain to your child the difference between being a risk-taker by trying new things and doing dangerous things.

CIS JOG-A-THON IS FRIDAY, APRIL 25TH
Hello CIS families!

It's that time of year again...Jog-A-Thon! As many of you know Jog-A-Thon is our school's biggest PTA fundraiser of the year, and this year all proceeds will go towards playground equipment for our new building!

Last year our amazing students brought in close to $8500 and this year (since we are so awesome), we're hoping to exceed that amount. We need all the help we can get from our fabulous CIS families though!

Students will be bringing home their Jog-A-Thon packets next week and they can start collecting donations right away. In order for your child to participate in the Jog-a-thon you must return the medical clearance located on the first page of the packet no later than Wednesday April 23rd. Students who do not have a signed permission form on file will not be allowed to participate in the event. This year's Jog-A-Thon is a Green Theme! Students are encouraged to go crazy with green. Green hair, green accessories, green clothing! Students do not need to wear uniforms on this day. Students should wear comfortable clothing and shoes that allow them to run comfortably. The PTA will be on site selling smoothies before and after the event for $3.00 each.

Families are encouraged to come and cheer on your joggers. Please contact Abbie Jackson @ abbiej76@comcast.net if you have any questions about the event or are able to assist.

Schedule:

9:00 Jog-A-Thon begins with grades K-1

9:20: Jog-A-Thon continues with grades 2-3

9:40: Jog-A-Thon continues with grades 4-5

10:00 Jog-A-Thon concludes with grades 6-7

10:20 Jog-A-Thon concludes with grades 8-10

THANKS!

A great big thank you to Sandia National Laboratories for the CIS Family Science Night, and to all of the students, families and teachers that came to the science fair!

Science Day was a big success with our 4th and 5th graders presenting their science fair projects to our Kinder, 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade students during the school day.  Our MYP students set up their science fair project and personal project presentation boards in the MYP hallway.

During Family Science Night, Sandia National Labs set up fun hands-on science stations and many in our family community participated in this as well as hearing CIS students present their projects!

Thank you to the CIS PTA for sponsoring this fantastic day of science!
