 Corrales International School
Dear CIS Families

This will be an exciting week.  We have Book Fair, Shop and Stroll, Student Auction Preview Dinner; Governing Council Meeting, and concluding our week is our Winter Student Performance.   All of these activities define who we are as a community, they are part of of our culture and traditions.

These traditional events and activities are for the good of our students, who are the core of our community.  This school community exists for them.

"We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give."

- Winston Churchill

A commitment we all make when we join the Corrales International School community is to volunteer a minimum of 3 hours (student enrollment form).   We need your time to make all of these events a success.   Please contact the following parent volunteers to volunteer 3 hours for one of these events:

Book Fair: Linda Kehoe,  [email protected]

Shop and Stroll: Elizabeth Volkmann, [email protected]

Student Auction Preview and Winter Student Performance:
Anna Prewitt, [email protected]

There are many opportunities for you to Pitch In.   Remember we are all role models for our students and we must set example for community service.

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."

- Margaret Mead

I want to thank you for all your continued support and for believing in Corrales International School.   I hope you can attend the upcoming family activities and help us celebrate our amazing school community  with your attendance and volunteerism. Remember it really does take a "village" to raise a child.

Respectfully,

Dr. Elsy Diaz

Head of School

NURTURING INTERNATIONALLY MINDEDNESS

IB describes an internationally minded individual as one who, "recognizes their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, and helps to create a better and more peaceful world.  The attributes of the IB Learner Profile that we discuss in our classrooms and in the Backpack are those of internationally minded individuals." International Baccalaureate Organization (2012).

I recommend that you take a look at the International Baccalaureate website at www.ibo.org  and review the current IB World Magazine article entitled The Global Generation.   It clearly articulates the type of world our children are inheriting and the type of education that we need to provide for them.

IB emphasizes that we, as educators and parents, recognize "the need to prepare students for the social and moral challenges that await them in such a complex world. The traditional academic disciplines alone will not prepare our young people for such challenges. Our students must develop the necessary skills, habits of mind and the moral and ethical values to be able to understand and manage the interconnectivity and complexity of the modern world." IB Diploma Programme: From principles into practice (2009).

This is why IB schools are so important and why Corrales International School is not your typical traditional school.  We are striving to create internationally minded global citizens that can take their place as leaders of tomorrow in government, environment, sciences, healthcare, and any other career field that has yet to be created or imagined.

P.S.  The back gate will be locked each day at 5pm.  Please enter through the front door if you are picking your child up from Permaculture after 5pm.

Kids' Shop-n-Stroll ON TUESDAY!

Please join us for this year's Shop-n-Stroll at CIS on Tuesday, December 10th from 3-5pm.  This is a fantastic opportunity for your children to purchase low-cost but thoughtful gifts for their family and friends. This event is always a big hit with the kids who are so excited to be able to participate in the season of giving!   Please mark your calendars to attend.

We need your help to make this a great event.

Please send in gently used or new items as soon as possible, preferably pre-priced for $1 or under, to contribute to the event--toys, jewelry, nick-knacks, household items, anything you think someone else would enjoy that you are no longer using!  We also need donated wrapping paper & gift tags so kids can bring home wrapped items for their Holiday celebrations.

Your donations and attendance will make the event a huge success.  We look forward to seeing you next week on Tuesday afternoon.

CIS All School Performance of "Snow Way Out"
and Silent Auction

This year's winter performance by CIS students will be a musical production of "Snow Way Out" at the South Broadway Cultural Center (1025 Broadway SE) on Saturday, December 14!  This wonderful community event will also coincide with a Silent Auction of amazing student art, plus much more!

A fun family day to support our fabulous IB, dual language charter school as we raise money for our new facility! The Silent Art Auction begins at 12:30pm, with the first performance at 1:30, and the second performance at 3:00. PYP students have been assigned to one performance only, based on last name.  MYP students will be attending both sessions.

Tickets for this event are $5 per person.  Performing CIS students and children under 4 are FREE (though non-CIS students must be issued a ticket due to limited seating).  Your child brought home a form--please return this form even if your family cannot attend so that we have an accurate head count for performing students!

The Winter Program Snow Way Out is almost here!  Saturday December 14, 2013

We wanted to give all our students a chance to 'shine' and showcase all the wonderful talents they have and the growth they have made in Theatre, Art, and Music.   So, for that reason we went to Performance A and Performance B for PYP.  MYP 1 & 3 have many important positions both performance and backstage so we need them for both rehearsals and both shows... they are our 'rock'.

I realize that this may create a bit of running around next Saturday, December 14, but we think it is a wonderful opportunity and experience for our students to be able to do at least one rehearsal on this beautiful stage at the South Broadway Cultural Center. It is an opportunity to see how the lighting and sound work, to learn where to enter and exit and to 'feel at home' in this space before the actual performance.

If you cannot make the rehearsal we understand, but please still bring your student(s) to perform. They know the material well and they will follow the students that are able to attend the rehearsal.

Also, I would like to assure everyone that if your student(s) cannot make the show this will in no way affect their grade. The only exception for this is MYP 1 & 3 if they have committed to a solo part or job and the show will be depending on them.
