 Corrales International School
Dear CIS Families

I want to thank all of you that participated in gathering pledges for our our Read-a-thon.   The Read-a-thon website indicates we raised $10,250! Yay and congratulations to all our students who participated.   The funds raised will contribute to our new school building.  this was an amazing effort for those families that participated.  MIL GRACIAS!

The month of December is short with only 15 instructional days. There are some fun upcoming events for you and your family.  We have the Book Fair; the Shop and Stroll; Student Art Auction Preview Dinner; Winter Student Performance, and of course another Pajama Day!  Please read the descriptions below of these fun activities.  I hope to see all of you at this great events this month.

As we prepare for the Winter Break and the end of the fall semester, I encourage you to speak with your child/children about world news and help them continue their growth as Internationally Minded citizens.   Make the discussion age appropriate for the students.  Here are some examples of things you could explore through the internet.

  • how other countries celebrate the beginning of winter
  • monitor the weather around the world
  • time zones and there relevance to a country's culture
  • politics, health issues, poverty
  • In what ways are countries dependent on each other, financially, politically, etc....

IB describes an internationally minded individual as one who, "recognizes their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, and helps to create a better and more peaceful world.  The attributes of the IB Learner Profile that we discuss in our classrooms and in the Backpack are those of internationally minded individuals." International Baccalaureate Organization (2012).

I recommend that you take a look at the International Baccalaureate website at www.ibo.org  and review the current IB World Magazine article entitled The Global Generation.   It clearly articulates the type of world our children are inheriting and the type of education that we need to provide for them.

IB emphasizes that we, as educators and parents, recognize "the need to prepare students for the social and moral challenges that await them in such a complex world. The traditional academic disciplines alone will not prepare our young people for such challenges. Our students must develop the necessary skills, habits of mind and the moral and ethical values to be able to understand and manage the interconnectivity and complexity of the modern world." IB Diploma Programme: From principles into practice (2009).

This is why IB schools are so important and why Corrales International School is not your typical traditional school.  We are striving to create internationally minded global citizens that can take their place as leaders of tomorrow in government, environment, sciences, healthcare, and any other career field that has yet to be created or imagined.

I want to thank you for all your continued support and for believing in Corrales International School.   I hope you can attend the upcoming family activities and help us celebrate our amazing school community  with your attendance and volunteerism. Remember it really does take a "village" to raise a child.

Respectfully,

Dr. Elsy Diaz

Head of School

Peer Mediation and Bully Prevention at CIS:

Over the past few weeks I have been introducing all CIS students to Peer Mediation. In addition, I've met regularly with the 4th and 5th graders to talk with them about bully prevention, using "I Feel" statements, and also how to manage behavior. I've been repeatedly rewarded and impressed with the level of self-awareness possessed by our students. I plan to implement a full peer mediation program in the New Year and have already had the students pick out who the school mediators will be. Mediator training will take place in January over a series of Wednesday afternoons and I've already sent home permission slips (for PYP students) for parents to sign if they want their student to be a mediator.  Please let m know if you have any questions about this process or if you'd like to be involved in any way. Here's to more peaceful means of solving conflict and some stellar students with the aptitude to lead the way.

Kids' Shop-n-Stroll

Please join us for this year's Shop-n-Stroll at CIS on Tuesday, December 10th from 3-5pm.  This is an opportunity for your children to purchase low-cost but thoughtful gifts for their family and friends. This event is always a big hit with the kids who are so excited to be able to participate in the season of giving!   Please mark your calendars to attend.

We need your help to make this a great event.

Please send in gently used or new items as soon as possible, preferably pre-priced for $1 or under, to contribute to the event--toys, jewelry, nick-knacks, household items, anything you think someone else would enjoy that you are no longer using!  We also need donated wrapping paper & gift tags so kids can bring home wrapped items for their Holiday celebrations.

Your donations and attendance will make the event a huge success.  We look forward to seeing you next week on Tuesday afternoon.

A fun family day to support our fabulous IB, dual language charter school as we raise money for our new facility! The Silent Art Auction begins at 12:30pm, with the first performance at 1:30, and the second performance at 3:00. PYP students have been assigned to one performance only, based on last name.  MYP students will be attending both sessions.

Tickets for this event are $5 per person.  Performing CIS students and children under 4 are FREE (though non-CIS students must be issued a ticket due to limited seating).  Your child will bring home a form--please return this form even if your family cannot attend so that we have an accurate head count for performing students!
