Dear CIS Families,
I want to thank all of you and our amazing teachers for making the time to meet regarding student learning. I am grateful for our teachers being so flexible with parent schedules and taking time from their personal obligations to meet with parents. I believe the amazing turnout among parents is also a testimony to our continued commitment to improve student learning and continue in our journey as an outstanding school.
There are a lot of exciting events on our upcoming schedule! On Friday, November 1st, students will be allowed to dress up as any character that is from the country their class is studying for and presenting about at our International Day Festival on Saturday, November 2nd. Please note that there will be no Halloween dress up allowed on October 31st. On Sunday, November 3rd, CIS will participate with a float in the Marigold Parade for the 3rd year in a row and we hope many of you will join us!
These events are fantastic ways to build our community and get to know one another. The International Day Festival from 1-5 this Saturday is one of the most exciting events brought to us by our CIS PTA. This community event features local performers, as well as each CIS music class performing for all of us, food, International classroom museums and presentations by CIS students, henna painting, bounce houses, tethered balloon rides (courtesy of the fantastic Rice family) and much fun! Look for a way to sign up and help make this year the best festival yet!
OUR NEW SCHOOL BUILDING (CHECK IT OUT)
We have met with the architect and have begun the design process for our new building. The link above will take you to an exterior view of the building. As soon as the architect completes the final drawings we will provide those to you.
While the thought of needing to raise $30,000 by January may sound daunting, it was noted by some families at our meeting that if you break it down it represents approximately $300 of fundraising per CIS family. This generous act would help us gain an amazing educational space for our students. Some great suggestions from the meeting were that we ask friends and family to write a check or BUY A BRICK for CIS in lieu of a birthday present, donate to the Corrales International School Foundation through the United Way as soon as possible, or ask businesses that you have a connection with to donate to our amazing school. Please visit the CIS FOUNDATION WEBSITE (CLICK HERE) or the BUY A BRICK website and consider contributing while having your child's name or the family name engraved on a brick that would be forever displayed in the entry way of our new building. These donations are tax deductible and the CIS fed tax id number is 03-2177700-00-4. There is also a box in our school where you can send your donations.
A big thank you to Judy Hines for volunteering to Co-Chair on the Foundation Board and to Michael Weinberg for volunteering to be the Treasurer! Please contact Dr. Elsy Diaz if you would like to work with Judy as a Co-Chair. CIS is in existence and will continue to be in existence because of the hard work of parents and staff working together. This is an exciting time for our school as we take the next natural step in owning our own building. We hope that we can continue to count your support!
Respectfully,
Dr. Elsy Diaz

The IB Learner Profile Trait for October is COMMUNICATOR
Students who are COMMUNICATORS are able to think and communicate in more than one language. They can express their ideas by speaking, drawing and writing. They can also communicate using mathematical language and symbols. How can parents help to develop students who are Communicators at home?
- Encourage your child to stay in touch with relatives and friends who live in other countries by writing letters, using the phone or sending email.
- When working on mathematics homework, encourage your child to explain his/her answer to you orally or by drawing a picture.
- Ask your child thought provoking questions and encourage them to discuss them with you. For example: o What would you do if you were scared of someone at school?
- Is there anything you cannot buy with money?
- Should you get an allowance? Why or why not?
- Work with your child to improve his/her listening skills. Being a good listener is an important part of communicating with others.
Communicators receive and express ideas and information confidently in more than one language, including the language of mathematical symbols.
Recommended reading for your student:
Diary of a Wombat French, Jackie 2003 Few words are used to describe the antics of a wombat's every day life.
Counting on Frank by Rod Clement This is the story of a boy who is a true enthusiast about mathematics and is always estimating, calculating and working things out. How many Franks would fill up the bedroom? (Frank is a dog). Striking illustrations add to the fun.
Sitti's Secrets Nye, Naomi Shihab 1994 An American girl visits her grandmother, who does not speak English, in her Middle Eastern village. The book illustrates their new relationship, despite the language difference.
Dear Mrs. LaRue, Letters from Obedience School Teague, Mark 2002 This hilarious book is comprised of letters that Ike the dog writes to his owner, Mrs. LaRue, of why he has wrongfully sent to obedience school.

International Day Festival |
|
Parents, Your child brought home a flyer and raffle tickets for our annual raffle to be held at this Saturday's International Day Festival. The CIS PTA is raffling off an IPad Mini and a Balloon ride (redeemable during the 2nd weekend in Nov, weather permitting). Raffle tickets are $5 each. If each student sells the 10 tickets sent home, this will be a successful fundraiser for our community! The Festival will be from 1-5pm this Saturday and there will be food trucks, bounce houses, tethered balloon rides (weather permitting) and CIS student performances and classroom museums for China, Mexico, Kenya, Morocco, Jamaica and Egypt! If you have some artifacts from any of those countries to loan our classrooms, it would be greatly appreciated! Sign up to help out here! Tickets to the Festival are $2.50 per person or $10.00 per family. Checks can be written to the CIS PTA. Please feel free to invite friends and family to enjoy our event. I can't wait to see you there! Tara Armijo-Prewitt tprewitt@gmail.com
