Dear CIS Families,

I hope you had a wonderful and relaxing long weekend and that you took advantage of this time to create wonderful memories with your children!

There are a lot of exciting events on our upcoming schedule!  On Friday, November 1st, students will be allowed to dress up as any character that is from the country their class is studying for and presenting about at our International Day Festival on Saturday, November 2nd.  Please note that there will be no Halloween dress up allowed on October 31st.  On Sunday, November 3rd, CIS will participate with a float in the Marigold Parade for the 3rd year in a row and we hope many of you will join us!

These events are fantastic ways to build our community and get to know one another.  The International Day Festival is one of the most exciting events brought to us by our CIS PTA. This community event features local performers, as well as each CIS music class performing for all of us, food, International classroom museums and presentations by CIS students, henna painting, bounce houses and much fun!  Look for a way to sign up and help make this year the best festival yet!

Respectfully,

Dr. Elsy Diaz

The IB Learner Profile Trait for October is COMMUNICATOR

Students who are COMMUNICATORS are able to think and communicate in more than one language.
They can express their ideas by speaking, drawing and writing. They can also communicate using
mathematical language and symbols. How can parents help to develop students who are
Communicators at home?
  • Encourage your child to stay in touch with relatives and friends who live in other countries by writing letters, using the phone or sending email.
  • When working on mathematics homework, encourage your child to explain his/her answer to you orally or by drawing a picture.
  • Ask your child thought provoking questions and encourage them to discuss them with you. For example: o What would you do if you were scared of someone at school?
    • Is there anything you cannot buy with money?
    • Should you get an allowance? Why or why not?
  • Work with your child to improve his/her listening skills. Being a good listener is an important part of communicating with others.
Communicators receive and express ideas and information confidently in more than one language, including the language of mathematical symbols.

Recommended reading for your student:

Diary of a Wombat
French, Jackie 2003
Few words are used to describe the antics of a wombat's every day life.

Counting on Frank by Rod Clement
This is the story of a boy who is a true enthusiast about mathematics and is always estimating, calculating and working things out. How many Franks would fill up the bedroom? (Frank is a dog). Striking illustrations add to the fun.

Sitti's Secrets
Nye, Naomi Shihab 1994
An American girl visits her grandmother, who does not speak English, in her Middle Eastern village. The book illustrates their new relationship, despite the language difference.

Dear Mrs. LaRue, Letters from Obedience School
Teague, Mark 2002
This hilarious book is comprised of letters that Ike the dog writes to his owner, Mrs. LaRue, of why he has wrongfully sent to obedience school.
