Nutritional Lunches

We  encourage families to pack the healthiest lunches and snacks for their children.   We strongly discourage energy drinks or soft drinks at the school and hope that families will choose drinks that are not high in sugar or caffeine.   Our School Advisory Committee will be considering some guidelines for school lunches and hope that families will provide some input for our discussions.

  IMPORTANT NOTICE
This school year we will not be able to have any type of nuts or peanuts at our school.   We have some children attending our school that are extremely allergic.  Even the powder and oils of nuts or peanuts could be detrimental to their health.  Please be cautious in packing your child's lunch and do not send any snacks or food that contains peanuts or tree nuts.

Dear CIS Families,

C
orrales International School is growing and thriving as we begin our  6th year as a charter school.   We have many things to celebrate.

Some of our new families may not be aware, but we are the first school in New Mexico to offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Program.  This school year we continue our journey as a candidate school for the IB Middle Years Program.   The International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) and curriculum has an international focus that helps students become academically, socially, emotionally, and culturally proficient citizens of the world.

In our journey to become an authorized school for the Middle Years Program (MYP) we are fine tuning our Community Service curriculum, Personal Project preparation for 9th and 10th graders, and MYP assessment/grading procedures.  All this is detailed in the MYP Handbook distributed in our HOLA Open House.  If you were not able to attend, please email me at diaz@corralesis.org so I may email you a copy of our MYP Handbook.

Our Middle Years Program has also begun implementation of the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) curriculum. Project Lead The Way (PLTW) is the leading provider of rigorous and innovative Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education curricular programs used in middle and high schools across the U.S. http://www.pltw.org/our-programs/middle-school-engineering-program

Corrales International School has begun the implementation of the Gateway to Technology courses, Design and Modeling and Automation and Robotics.  Under the direction of Rick Johnson, our students will:
  • Design and Modeling (DM)
    • Recognize the value of an engineering notebook to document and capture their ideas. They are introduced to and use the design process to solve problems and understand the influence that creative and innovative design has on our lives. Students use industry standard 3D modeling software to create a virtual image of their designs and produce a portfolio to showcase their creative solutions.
  • Automation and Robotics (AR)
    • Trace the history, development, and influence of automation and robotics. They learn about mechanical systems, energy transfer, machine automation and computer control systems. Students use a robust robotics platform to design, build and program a solution to solve an existing problem.
This school year, we also celebrate our third year as a partner with the Confucius Institute at New Mexico State University.

The NMSU Confucius Institute promotes awareness and understanding of the Chinese language and culture in the community through education, performances, and outreach.  As a partner with the NMSU Confucius Institute, two master Chinese teachers from China teach our MYP students to promote the learning of Chinese in our school.   Being recognized as a Confucius Institute Classroom is truly an honor for Corrales International School.

We truly have much to be proud of at CIS, most of all our awesome teachers and staff that make this school amazing and all these programs possible!

I hope you have a wonderful week.

Respectfully

Dr. Elsy Diaz, Head of School

The Learner Profile for the Month of September is:

Knowledgeable

Knowledgeable students develop and use conceptual understandings, exploring knowledge across a range of disciplines.  Students engage with issues and ideas that have local and global significance.

Activities for parents

  • Encourage your child to read books at home that correspond to the topics being covered in school.
  • Ask your child about what they are learning in school and engage them in conversations about it:

"Why do you think that is an important thing to know about?"

"Can you think of anything happening in the world today that might be similar to that aspect of History?"

  • Encourage your child to become familiar with current events and to read the newspaper and watch the news when appropriate.

¡Globalquerque

CIS will once again participate in the Globalquerque School Day! On September 20th, all grades and staff will go to the concert at the National Hispanic Cultural Center. ¡Globalquerque! is New Mexico's 9th Annual Celebration of World Music & Culture.

Each grade will require many parent volunteers to chaperone!  Chaperones MUST have an approved background check on file with CIS in order to participate.  Once cleared, these security measures are valid for 2 years.  If your background check is expired, or if you have never had one done, please pick up a form from Ms Patti at the front desk and head over to APS on Uptown Blvd to have it done.  Once cleared, please contact your child's teacher to indicate your interest in chaperoning!
