PTA NEWS | |
Did you know that field trips, after school clubs, before testing snacks, positive parenting workshops, book fair, jogathon and tons of other great events are all coordinated by the PTA? We need you!! We know everyone can't make it to the meetings and some people may be confused about how to get involved. We are searching for one representative from each class to agree to communicate PTA info to other parents. Please contact Megan Walsh to get involved. This responsibility will fulfill the required three hours of volunteer time per family. Email mmwalsh@swcp.com or call 505-934-4875.

Dear CIS Families:
Congratulations to our students who completed the NMSBA test. I know it was a stressful time for them and we appreciate all their hard work and your support through the testing weeks.
Well it's that time of year where we start wrapping up instruction and assessments and begin planning for next school year. I have been reviewing our test results on the NWEA Measure of Academic Progress (MAPs) and believe that as a school we need to refocus our attention to the teaching of Science, Technology, and Mathematics. We are beginning this journey by visiting schools with similar inquiry based programs, and reviewing the alignment of our Mathematics curriculum from Kindergarten to 10th grade. Ms. Bujanda and Ms. Robinson will be visiting classrooms at the Albuquerque Academy on Monday, April 8th to begin what I hope a collaborative exchange of ideas.
Additionally, I will be working with some of our amazing CIS teachers to study the relationship of the STEM (Science, Technology Engineering, and Mathematics) curriculum with the International Baccalaureate Program. Both curricula use inquiry strategies to teach real-world applications of Scientific and Mathematical processes.
Another change for CIS is the movement of sixth grade to the Primary Years Program. The Middle Years Program will be grades 7th - 10th grade. Why the change? -To better meet the instructional and social needs of our sixth grades students more effectively in a self-contained classroom. A 2007 research study conducted by the Terry Sanford Institute of Public Policy at Duke University compared student achievement and discipline issues of sixth grade students in an elementary school versus a middle school. The study found a higher number of discipline issues and lower academic performance of students attending a middle school.
Here is a compelling quote:
"Between the ages of 10 and 14, students must adjust to puberty, as well as to changes in social relationships with peers, family and authority figures (NMSA, 1996; Elias et.al, 1985; Eccles et al., 1993; Rudolph et al.,2001). Research suggests that difficulties in coping with multiple transitions may underlie some of the negative effects that many students experience during the transition from elementary school to middle school (Eccles et al., 1993) These effects include a decline in motivation and a loss of self-esteem, particularly when the transition occurs at younger ages (Simmons and Blythe, 1987; Rudolph et al., 2001); decline in academic achievement (Alspaugh and Harting, 1995; Alspaugh, 2001; Hanushek, Kain & Rivkin, 2004); strains on interpersonal functioning (Barber and Olsen, 2004); and in the long term, increased risk of dropping out of school (Alspaugh, 1998; Rumberger, 1995)."
Please don't hesitate to send me an email diaz@corralesis.org or come by my office if you would like to provide further input or insight to any of the above mentioned initiatives for our next exciting school year.
On another note, we count on parent volunteers to create successful and fun activities for our students. We have several activities coming up and we need YOU!. Please consider volunteering to help on the CIS Foundation (meetng April 16th at 5:00 p.m.), Jog-a-thon (April 26th ), Book Fair (April 15 -19th) , Picture Day (April 11th), Kids' Triatholon, Fied Day (May 24th). For further information on these events, please read below or call Patti/ Tara at 344-9733. Remember we all have a responsibility in making these events successful.
I hope you have a great week.
Respectfully,
Dr. Elsy Diaz
