Dear CIS Families:
I hope you had a restful 3-day weekend.  This week we begin testing our students on the NWEA MAPS test which we administer 3 times per year.   This is the second administration for this school year.  As with all testing, we ask that you help your child/children get plenty of rest and have a healthy breakfast in the morning.  
  
In previous years, we have found that students hurry through the Winter administration of this test. Please encourage your child/children to take the test seriously and take their time in taking the the test.    The link below is a copy of the testing schedule Winter 2013 NWEA MAPS Schedule
 
Please take the time to  read the following important announcements and reminders, there is information below on our upcoming Lockdown Drill on January 24th.

  • Working with your child to improve his/her listening skills.  Being a good listener is an important part of communicating with others.

Lockdown Drill
 
As part of our school safety plan we will have a lockdown drill on January 24th from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.  During the lockdown drill, visitors or parents will not be allowed to enter the building.  Please remind your children that this is a drill to prepare us in case of an emergency.   Teachers will continue to discuss the procedures with the students this week to prepare them for Thursday's drill.

We hope the new year has been wonderful for you and your family!  As you may know, this year the CIS PTA has been focusing on helping CIS families increase our positive parenting skills through free parenting workshops based on the Nurtured Heart Approach and encouraging our kids to perform well on testing days by providing healthy snacks.  In the next few weeks, you have an opportunity to participate in both activities!

Nurtured Heart Workshop
Monday, January 28th at 5:30 p.m.


 

Join us to learn how we can increase our parenting skills, help our kids succeed in school and at home and feel great about our relationships! 

 

The January Nurtured Heart Workshop sponsored by the CIS PTA will be held on Monday January 28, 2013 from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM at CIS!
  
This is the first in a series of three follow-up workshops delving deeper into the techniques. You are welcome to attend whether you participated in the Nurtured Heart Basics workshop in November or not.

Club News
  
Journalism Club--will resume this Wednesday.
  
Taekwondo--The next session of Taekwondo with Blackman Taekwondo Academy will begin Tuesday, January 22nd.  Please look for flyers about this next session on Miss Patti's desk!
  
Chess Club--In order to better advance learning in our chess club, Coach Stevens has requested parent volunteers to assist during club. This will allow him to break the group into skill level groups, and let your kids go further in developing their games!
  
Puzzle Club is now canceled.  Thank you to Carol Taylor for the successful months of this club!
  
Violin Club is canceled as Yuko Ruiz has secured a full time job and is no longer available to offer it. CIS Parent, Maria Pumilia is currently investigating alternative options.
  
CIS Drama Club with ALT begins this Wednesday, January 23rd. 
 
    This spring Drama Club will present "The Crazy Mixed-Up Fairy Tale" by Bill Hayden. The play will be presented at the Albuquerque Little Theatre on Saturday May 4, 2013. Time of performance will be announced later. Rehearsals will be on Wednesdays from 12:30-2pm, January 23rd - May 1st, 2013.  All rehearsals will be held at CIS in the kindergarten classroom except for the rehearsal on Friday May 3rd (4-6pm), which will be at ALT. We will be auditioning for parts during the first two meetings of Drama Club on January 23rd and 30th.

     The fee for this semester will be $150.00. For families, first child pays full fee, additional siblings will receive a 50% discount. Checks may be made out to ALT, or we will accept credit card payments. Fees are due the first week of class. Please send completed registration form with your child to our first meeting on January 23rd. Questions please contact Kathryn Morales via email at kathryn@abqlt.org.
