December 12, 2012        CIS   BACKPACK EXPRESS

Dear CIS Families:

There will be a somber mood in schools across the U.S. this week. Everyone will have the incident in Connecticut on their minds and hearts. I would like to offer you the following link that offers tips for parents in helping students manage their stress and feelings regarding the shooting in Connecticut. http://www.apa.org/helpcenter/aftermath.aspx.

As a school we will continue to take steps to maintain our school safety. Our school will continue to lock the back gate and doors after 8:30 a.m. The only entrance to our school is the front door and all visitors must ring the doorbell and be buzzed in by staff to enter the building.

Last Thursday, the Safety Committee met and we began the process for implementing procedures for:

  • Preparing students, teachers, and parents for a lockdown drill
  • Scheduling lockdown drills in January and April
  • Identifying a safe place within a block of our location in case we need to evacuate our students
  • A communication system between the school, parents, police, and media

In addition to these steps, I have made arrangements for an intercom system to be installed at our front door this week. Visitors will now be required to identify themselves and state their business in our school before entering the building.

During the Winter Break, 8 video cameras will be installed. If you would like to volunteer to help with this installation, please email me at elsy@corralesinternationalschool.org for dates and times of installation.

The following individuals attended the CIS Safety Committee: meeting: Josh Montano (PYP Parent), Glenn Mitchell (MYP Parent), Megan Walsh (PYP Parent), Dr. Elsy Diaz (Head of School), Rick Johnson (MYP Teacher & PYP Parent), Dawn Jackson (Registrar), Diane Gunn Miles (Business Manager), and Tara Armijo-Prewitt (Office Manager & PYP Parent).

As a school we are committed to the safety of our students. We are also committed to our students' learning. We will continue to teach ours students, not in fear, but in joy that each one our students will become an adult that will change this world to one of peace. Please help us teach this lesson, each child is a hope for a better tomorrow.

Respectfully,

Dr. Elsy Diaz

Proudly your Head of School
