IB LEARNER PROFILE |
CARING |
Students who are CARING want people around them to be happy and are sensitive to their needs. They think about the world and work to take care of their community and the environment. They remember to treat others how they themselves would like to be treated.
How can parents help to develop students who are Caring at home?
- Role model the caring behavior you would like to see in your child all the time. Your child has big eyes and ears and notices everything you do. Using kind words, helping people without being asked, being an active listener all show your child that you care about people. Even a simple thing, like holding a door for someone, shows your child that you are aware of others around you and want to help them.
- Think about how your family can get involved with community organizations.
- Reduce, Reuse & Recycle. Sometimes this can be challenging for busy families, but make the effort to establish these habits in your home. By developing children who care about the environment, you are helping the future of the globe.
- Smile.
- After reading a book, spend some time considering how the people in the book acted. Was someone in the book caring? All of the time or just some of the time? Were all of the characters in the book caring or just some of them? Some books to consider:
Lily's Purple Plastic Purse, Kevin Henkes
The Giving Tree, Shel Silverstein
Yertle the Turtle, Dr. Seuss
The Grouchy Ladybug, Eric Carle |
NURTURED HEART APPROACH
FOR PARENTS
Ignite the GREATNESS in your child. | |
Thank you to the 50 parents that participated in the Intro sessions to the Nurtured Heart training series! The PTA Board is thrilled at the feedback we've gotten so far. Follow up sessions will be held in January, February and March. Here's a sample of what CIS families are saying about Nurtured Heart: "After attending the nurtured heart program, I used 3 techniques with both of my daughters the next evening. The night was more rewarding for all of us with the girls being more independent and responsible." "Nurtured heart gave me tools to realize I should increase my energy level with my daughter when she is actively positive. I decrease my energy when she acts in a negative fashion. Guess what happens: she wants energy from her dad and she realized it only happens when she is acting positive."
'After using nurtured heart techniques, my child brushes her teeth at night without me asking. We both high five after she finishes brushing. It's a great way to end the evening!' Our dates for next year will be 1/28, 2/25, 3/25 from 5:30-7:30pm. There will be only one session each month so please add these dates to your calendar. We will delve deeper into a few of the Nurtured Heart techniques each month. You don't want to miss any of them! |

PTA NEWS
Our Scholastic Book Fair will take place during the second week of December. We are in the planning stages now and need many volunteers!
This is a fun way to complete your "Three for Me" volunteer hours! Duties include cashier, assisting teachers/students with book selections, decorating and special events.
The committee will be holding it's first meeting next week. If you are interested in working on this committee (or volunteering during the actual book fair) email Tammy at the address below.
The art work has been submitted for the Display My Art Fundraiser. We are expecting to receive the brochures and magnets sometime this next week. You will have about 2 weeks to complete your orders. They can be done online or you can use a paper form and check. Product will be delivered between the 6th and 12th of December. I know the students are really excited to share their work with you!
We are getting ready to kick off another Fundraising Event! How would you like to raise money for our school without selling items (or purchasing them yourself!)? What if I told you that you can do it on a regular basis without spending any differently than you already do? Sound interesting?
The PTA is starting a Scrips program. In a nutshell, families purchase gift cards from the school to use instead of cash/check/credit cards while doing their regular shopping. This is also great for holiday gifts! You'll be amazed to see how many of your favorite retailers are available through this program! The retailers sell us the gift cards at a reduced rate and the difference is our profit! The percentage varies by retailer (usually between 2-14%) but your gift card is worth the full face value.
Flyers will be coming home this week with more details and we will be holding some informational meetings.
If you have questions about any of these programs or volunteer opportunities, please contact Tammy Spatz at tamspatz@gmail.com.
