 WE ARE CIS

Message from the Head Administrator
We had the best and busiest weekend due to the hard work of our parent volunteers, teachers, and staff.  I want to thank all our volunteers for their help and Tara Armijo-Prewitt, who coordinated our entire weekend. Our 5th Annual International Day went extremely well and everyone had a good time due to Tara's leadership and the hard work of so many parents, teachers and children!   A special thank you to the Rice Family for the tethered balloon rides!

Tara also organized our participation in the Dia De Los Muertos parade.  Check out our pictures on facebook.  Thank you, Tara for all you do for our school!

IB LEARNER PROFILE
CARING

Students who are CARING want people around them to be happy and are sensitive to their needs. They think about the world and work to take care of their community and the environment. They remember to treat others how they themselves would like to be treated.

How can parents help to develop students who are Caring at home?

  1. Role model the caring behavior you would like to see in your child all the time. Your child has big eyes and ears and notices everything you do. Using kind words, helping people without being asked, being an active listener all show your child that you care about people. Even a simple thing, like holding a door for someone, shows your child that you are aware of others around you and want to help them.
  2. Think about how your family can get involved with community organizations.
  3. Reduce, Reuse & Recycle. Sometimes this can be challenging for busy families, but make the effort to establish these habits in your home. By developing children who care about the environment, you are helping the future of the globe.
  4. Smile.
  5. After reading a book, spend some time considering how the people in the book acted. Was someone in the book caring? All of the time or just some of the time? Were all of the characters in the book caring or just some of them? Some books to consider:

Lily's Purple Plastic Purse, Kevin Henkes

The Giving Tree, Shel Silverstein

Yertle the Turtle, Dr. Seuss

The Grouchy Ladybug, Eric Carle

NURTURED HEART APPROACH
FOR PARENTS
Ignite the GREATNESS in your child.

Where are you on your parenting journey?

As all of you know by now, children do not come with owner's manuals. We all learn to parent "on the job" and from our own parents. There are so many decisions to make for our children that often times we make a decision and hope for the best. I believe the Nurtured Heart Approach offers insight to understanding children's behavior and strategies for parents to use to modify behavior and help them become strong, confident individuals.

The Nurtured Heart Approach addresses negative behavior in a positive way and builds the "inner wealth" of both children and adults. The three strands of the approach are:

  • Relentless pursuit and celebration of success
  • Refusal to give energy or "payoff" to negative behavior
  • Strict enforcement of clear and consistent rules

CIS staff and teachers have been implementing the NHA strategies this school year and we would love parents to learn these strategies. This will provide a common language to address behavior between the home and the school. Please take advantage of this great opportunity.

Remember, parenting is a journey and we can all use guidance to illumnate the road ahead.

VOLUNTEER : THREE FOR ME
What is Three for Me?

Three for Me is a promise... a promise to our children and to our school! It is a promise to volunteer three hours of your time during the course of the year, at or on behalf of our school. If you have more than one child at our school, a commitment of three hours per family is all that we ask. All adults (e.g. parents, guardians, grandparents) are encouraged to participate.

What counts toward my Three for Me promise?
There are numerous volunteer opportunities which will fulfill your commitment. Throughout the school year you will be notified via notes/emails from teachers, the PTA newsletter and PTA website of upcoming opportunities to fulfill your hours. Here are a few examples of what counts towards your hours:

PTA NEWS

Our Scholastic Book Fair will take place during the second week of December. We are in the planning stages now and need many volunteers!

This is a fun way to complete your "Three for Me" volunteer hours! Duties include cashier, assisting teachers/students with book selections, decorating and special events.

The committee will be holding it's first meeting next week. If you are interested in working on this committee (or volunteering during the actual book fair) email Tammy at the address below.

The art work has been submitted for the Display My Art Fundraiser. We are expecting to receive the brochures and magnets sometime this next week. You will have about 2 weeks to complete your orders. They can be done online or you can use a paper form and check. Product will be delivered between the 6th and 12th of December. I know the students are really excited to share their work with you!

We are getting ready to kick off another Fundraising Event! How would you like to raise money for our school without selling items (or purchasing them yourself!)? What if I told you that you can do it on a regular basis without spending any differently than you already do? Sound interesting?

The PTA is starting a Scrips program. In a nutshell, families purchase gift cards from the school to use instead of cash/check/credit cards while doing their regular shopping. This is also great for holiday gifts! You'll be amazed to see how many of your favorite retailers are available through this program! The retailers sell us the gift cards at a reduced rate and the difference is our profit! The percentage varies by retailer (usually between 2-14%) but your gift card is worth the full face value.

Flyers will be coming home this week with more details and we will be holding some informational meetings.

If you have questions about any of these programs or volunteer opportunities, please contact Tammy Spatz at tamspatz@gmail.com.
