Dear CIS Families:

Let me first begin by apologizing for the confusion some of you might have experienced regarding costumes and October 31st.   The question every year is whether we celebrate Halloween at our school or celebrate literature.  This question comes up every year not because of religious reasons but because of the impact celebrations like these can have on our instruction.  We only have our students for 176 days of instruction and we have extensive demands from the New Mexico Public Education Department and from the International Baccalaureate.  Our teachers do an amazing job of integrating these requirements into your child's instruction.   Therefore when we discuss Halloween we discuss both educational, cultural and family traditions, as well as child development benefits.

Unfortunately we all get so busy that before we know it, it is time to decide and though I discussed several options with some of the teachers, I did not conclude my discussion last week.   So some of the teachers probably found out their options through the CIS Facebook comment that I felt compelled to post after receiving input from a parent.  For this I also truly apologize to the teachers.

I believe that celebrations are an important part of growing up.  Not only do they establish cultural and traditional options for children, but they also create memories.  Based on previous BP messages from me, you know that I am all about creating memories for children.   I want to continue our school's tradition of costume-wearing but also respect our teachers' creative instructional freedom as professionals to decide the appropriateness as well as the instructional benefits of costumes for their students .

I hope you will support your child's teacher's decision regarding costumes.  If your child's teacher decides that this school year costumes are not a viable option, help your child understand that decision.   Remember, how you react to the decision is clearly an important memory your child will have.  Will it be negative or positive?  Please also trust that your child's teacher has their best interest in mind when they make instructional decisions.     Thank you for all you do for your child.  Let's continue nurturing for International Mindedness.

Respectfully,
Dr. Elsy Diaz
Head of School

P.S.   Don't forget Parent Teacher Conferences are this week Wednesday through Friday.  These days will be early dismissal.

Halloween Costumes
1. MYP students at this time are not allowed to wear costumes to school. MYP teachers will discuss with their students if they will allow costumes on Wednesday. But at this time, most teachers feel that it is too disruptive to the educational environment for MYP students.

2. 4th graders: - Ms. Lopez has asked that her students not wear costumes on Wednesday and that their dress up day is on Thursday November 1st for the Seuss-celebration. Everyone in 4th grade will wear costumes related to the Dr. Seuss book characters.

3. K, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th grade teachers will be advising their students if they are wearing costumes on Wednesday or Thursday for Seuss-celebration.

MESSAGE FROM OUR NURSE
MONTH/YEARThe Health office is looking forward to a healthy & happy school year at CIS. As parents you can help us make sure that is possible. Please remember the following:

Keep your student at home if he/she has a fever of 100.0 or higher. Please do not send your student to school until they have been fever free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication.
Keep your student at home if they have been vomiting or has uncontrollable diarrhea. Please do not send them back to school unless they are free from symptoms for 24 hours.
.Do not send medications to school with your student. It is against school policy for any student to carry medication without speaking to the School Nurse and having proper documentation.
Remind your students of proper hygiene regarding illnesses. Encourage covering your nose & mouth with a tissue. Remind them to wash their hands frequently.
We can all help the CIS students stay healthy with these simple steps! If you have any questions or concerns we will be happy to answer them. We feel privileged to be taking care of the health needs of your children and consider it honor.

NURTURED HEART APPROACH
FOR PARENTS
Ignite the GREATNESS in your child.

Where are you on your parenting journey?

As all of you know by now, children do not come with owner's manuals. We all learn to parent "on the job" and from our own parents. There are so many decisions to make for our children that often times we make a decision and hope for the best. I believe the Nurtured Heart Approach offers insight to understanding children's behavior and strategies for parents to use to modify behavior and help them become strong, confident individuals.

The Nurtured Heart Approach addresses negative behavior in a positive way and builds the "inner wealth" of both children and adults. The three strands of the approach are:

  • Relentless pursuit and celebration of success
  • Refusal to give energy or "payoff" to negative behavior
  • Strict enforcement of clear and consistent rules

CIS staff and teachers have been implementing the NHA strategies this school year and we would love parents to learn these strategies. This will provide a common language to address behavior between the home and the school. Please take advantage of this great opportunity.

Remember, parenting is a journey and we can all use guidance to illumnate the road ahead.

HELP OUR BLOSSOMING MUSICIANS
Do you have a guitar taking up space in your closet? (holding memories from your high school garage band)

Our MYP guitar class is in desperate need of some guitars. If you have one at home that is not being used, please consider lending it to our class for the school year. We can use either classical or acoustic guitars ( but not electric). We have extra strings and can do small repairs. Here are some quotes from our 9th and 10th graders.
"It would be very helpful" - Anjelica
"Every bit helps ( we are so small)" - Sabrina
"We'll take good care of the guitars!" - Brittany

You can bring your guitar in any day and leave it with Mrs. Clarke or Patti. If you have any questions - email Mrs. Clarke at robyn@corralesinternationalschool.org
Thanks in advance for your help!
