Dear CIS Families

Our students completed Winter testing on the MAPS (Measure of Academic Progress) this past week. Your child's teacher will be reviewing the test results with you during Parent -Teacher Conferences.

The IB Learner Profile for February is PRINCIPLED. A principled person has integrity, honesty, and a sense of fairness and justice. Allow your children to reflect on their own experiences as a first step toward creating principled individuals. Talk about decisions they make throughout the day that relate to the idea of being a principled person-at recess, in their learning, with friends and teachers, at lunch, and so on.

Tomorrow is Valentines Day, your child's teacher will contact you IF their classroom is celebrating this day.  If you provide snacks tomorrow, please keep in mind our nutrition policy and bring healthy options. If your child is bringing cards for peers, please make sure no one is left out.

I hope you have a wonderful week and Happy Valentines Day.  May we all get lots of  hugs and kisses!

Sincerely,

Elsy Diaz, Ph.D.

Head Administrator

INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE

LEARNER PROFILE

PRINCIPLED

Learners act with integrity and honesty, and a strong sense of fairness, justice and respect for the dignity of the individual, groups and communities. They take responsibility for their own actions and the consequences that accompany them.

Self-assessment is necessary when speaking of being a principled person. Here are questions for us to use to

ponder as we ask ourselves, "Am I a principled person?"

Do we always try to do what is right, even when it's costly or difficult?

Do we live up to the highest ethical standards?

Do we compromise our values and give in to temptation?

Do we take responsibility for what goes on in our community?

Do we do our part for the common good?

Do we help take care of the environment?

Do we participate in community service?

Do we make decisions without favoritism?

Do we do the right thing even when no one is looking and we are guaranteed to not get caught?

Are we true to ourselves?

MUSIC NEWS

Wow - what a great day! Our 4th and 5thgrades spent Friday, Feb 10th at the Bele de les Artes Dance Festival at the National Hispanic Cultural Center. After performing our own dances and songs from Kenya and Brazil, we watched 8 other schools share a wide variety of music and dances from around the world. In the afternoon our students split up to attend master classes on Flamenco, African, and Middle Eastern Dance, singing , and guitar playing. I was so proud of their open-mindedness and leadership in risk-taking. ( some even learned belly-dancing: ) Thank you to Ms. Kavita, Ms. Kim, and all the parent chaperones for helping to make this day a success. We are so fortunate to have had this opportunity. --Robyn Clark

PTA NEWS

**Please note that there will be no PTA meeting in February**

Dear PTA members and CIS community,

We have some exciting openings in the PTA. Please find below a description of the open positions. If you are not a PTA member and are interested in one of the positions, you would just need to become a member. Don't worry, it's a very easy process! If  you have any questions or would like more information about the positions and time commitment, please feel free to contact me.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Monet Silva-Caldwell
PTA President

Vice President
The ideal candidate is a current PTA member that is interested in finishing the current term, until the end of the 2012 school year and running for the position of president for the next term (2012-2014).
The VP is responsible for:
-being an active member of PTA and of the executive board
-in collaboration with the president, preparing and leading alternate meetings
-assisting with all PTA activites
-acting as aide to the President.
-performing the duties of the President as necessary.
-performing other duties as needed

Nomination Steering Committee
We need 4-5 PTA members to form a nomination committee to search for a new Executive Committee for 2012-2014 school years.  As part of the committee you will assist in finding people that are interested in serving on the CIS PTA Executive committee. Elections will be held at the April PTA General Meeting.

Food Pantry Chairperson
The person(s) who manages the Food Pantry for the school have two responsibilities. The first is to stock the Food Pantry for children who arrive at school without lunch, and sometimes, children who have not eaten breakfast. This requires purchasing food items approximately every two weeks. Some items may be purchased from the Roadrunner Food Bank. Paper products are also needed from time to time. The Food Pantry shelves need to be cleaned out and organized before re-stocking. The refrigerator also often needs a good cleaning before re-stocking.
The second responsibility is to purchase or obtain food (through various food raising efforts) to help families in need make it through the weekend. We have partnered with Mission Avenue Elementary School to participate in a monthly Roadrunner Food Bank- Mobile Food Pantry where families have access to approximately 50 lbs of food for free. The Food Pantry Chair communicates the date and time of the Mobile Food Pantry (at Mission Avenue).
Some recordkeeping is required.
