Dear Parents:

Happy New Year.  As the co-chair of the Governing Council, I am writing to remind you that New Mexico's legislature will be meeting for 30 days beginning Tuesday, January 17.  Fortunately, the state's economic picture is brighter, which means there should be additional money available to fund public schools next school year.  In fact, the legislature has announced that $89.2 million more in funds have been budgeted for public schools.  If passed, this could mean as much as a 3.2 percent increase in funding for CIS next school year. The Governor has also weighed in on the budget for schools.  Hers shows $97.2 million in new money would be targeted to support schools.

The CIS Governing Council is relieved that public schools probably will not have to suffer through another round of budget cuts.  Despite the good news, we wanted you to know that CIS is not yet out of the woods.  This is because there is always the threat that the legislature will eliminate or drastically cut funding in an area that directly impacts charter schools, such as the funding virtually all charters receive for being considered a small school.  If this were to happen, CIS would be devastated.

We will be monitoring the legislature for potentially bad bills and will make every effort to get the word to parents so you can take action.  Legislators want to hear what their constituents think about such issues as the need for charter schools as well as their views on specific bills.   Phone calls and e-mails from constituents make a difference as even a handful can and do influence a legislator.

If you don't already know, we hope you will take the time to find out the name and contact information for your local representative.  To obtain the information, simply go to:  http://www.nmlegis.gov/lcs/ and then click on Members and Find Your Legislator.

CIS has made tremendous progress in just three and half years. The CIS Governing Council is grateful to you, your kids, and the faculty and staff for making CIS's success possible. We have no doubt that the school's future remains bright not only in 2012 but for many, many years to come.

Reserving your child's seat...

If you have not yet let us know whether you are returning for the 2012-2013 school year, it is imperative that you contact Linda Payne, our registrar, ASAP.  A space can only be held for your child if you contact Linda.  Failure to do reserve your child's space will result in that seat being entered into the lottery on February 1, 2011.  In that case, your child will not be able to attend CIS next year.

PTA

Happy New Year!  Did you make a resolution to get organized and de-clutter?  Did you know that you can do this while helping CIS?  Although the Annual CIS Garage Sale is months away, we will begin taking donations NOW!  Maggie Mathisen has graciously offered to store items (until she runs out of space!) for the sale that will be held in May.  You can contact her at 898-7853 or myself, Tammy Spatz, at tamspatz@gmail.com or 303-587-2039.  For last year's sale, we only had 10-15 families donate items for the sale.  I know that we can get a great deal more participation by taking your donations off your hands when you are ready!  We will also plan some pick-up days at the school in the near future--watch for details.  The garage sale requires two main ingredients: DONATIONS and VOLUNTEERS!  I would like to begin forming a committee now to work on pricing, advertising, set-up and other tasks.  This is a really big job for 1 or 2 people but actually pretty fun as a group and a great way to get to know other CIS families.  We have 2 tentative locations for the sale this year but we are open to suggestions.  Also, tell your friends and family--some of our best donations have been from outside CIS!  If you have any questions, please contact me.
