New in 2013: "Living Your Best with Early Stage Alzheimer's" to Begin January 25
New series combines elements of Living with Alzheimer's and Support Groups

Alzheimer's Association Northeastern New York Chapter has initiated a new Early Stage Engagement program for those newly diagnosed with Alzheimer's or dementia and their care partners. Living Your Best with Early Stage Alzheimer's is a 12-session series that combines programming from the Alzheimer's Association's Living with Alzheimer's curriculum with support group activities.

The Living with Alzheimer's programs for both diagnosed individuals and their caregivers provide information and resources on:
  • developing a care team
  • legal and financial planning
  • coping strategies
  • care and treatment options
  • communicating and connecting, and
  • maximizing independence.

Support groups provide an opportunity for participants to talk freely and confidentially about shared experiences and provide each other with empathy, compassion and support. Living Your Best with Early Stage Alzheimer's series will also provide a place to discuss the mutual experience of putting into practice the strategies and methods discussed in the Living with Alzheimer's education sessions.

Living Your Best with Early Stage Alzheimer's will meet every other week. At each session, the whole group will spend some time together, and then split into groups of diagnosed individuals and care partners. The first week each group will begin the first session of their respective Living with Alzheimer's program. In the following session, two weeks later, each group will have an opportunity to share and discuss their experience putting what they learned into practice and provide support for the others in their group. Thereafter, the bi-weekly sessions will alternate between educational programming and supportive discussions.

Our first Living Your Best with Early Stage Alzheimer's series will begin on January 25 and conclude on June 28th. All sessions with begin at 9:30 am and will be held at the Chapter office at 4 Pine West Plaza, Suite 405 in Albany. Due to the programs interactive nature, Living Your Best with Early Stage Alzheimer's enrollment is limited and there is a brief screening process to ensure participants are able to fully participate. To learn more and to enroll, email Karen Britt at Karen.Britt@alz.org or call her at 518.867.4999 x303.
