Spring Recruiting Season
The fall recruiting season has passed, but spring recruiting season still awaits, so it's not too late to secure a position. As we get closer to Thanksgiving break, you will want to start creating a game plan for spring recruiting season. How can you increase your chances of obtaining an internship or full-time job by the end of the academic year?
Here are some things to think about to start that process:
Ensure you have a strong resume. If you did not receive first round interviews this fall, your resume could be the problem. Perhaps a low GPA, lack of experience, poor format/design, grammatical errors, or lack of involvement/leadership activities. Take advantage of resources to look over your resume.
Take advantage of opportunities to speak with recruiters. The more comfortable you become speaking about your experience with company representatives, the better you will perform during interviews. Get experience by attending and participating in company days, information sessions, classroom presentations, Business Horizons on January 27th, and other events hosted by employers.
Cast a wider net of opportunities. If you only spoke to a few companies or only certain companies this fall, be open to other opportunities in an industry that may not be your top choice. Many companies visit campus. Stay alert of new opportunities available to you to meet company recruiters (read Career Connect, check Hokies4Hire, tune into Career Podcasts). Engage with a significantly larger amount this spring to increase your odds of obtaining interviews and job offers.
Research and prepare. Follow up with recruiters you meet by applying to opportunities. Once you have received a first round interview, prepare by researching the company and position, conducting mock interviews, prepping scenarios for behavioral based questions, and preparing questions for your interviewer. Taking these steps will help you feel more comfortable during the interview process, increasing your chances for a second interview.
Do not get frustrated. If you are getting final interviews with companies, but you still have not received offers, it's usually beacuse another candidate is slightly a better fit for the position. Do not give up, keep doing what you're doing, and eventually you will find the company and opportunity that is the right fit.
