Cupping - have you heard?
What is cupping? It's analogous wine tasting - you "spray" your palate with coffee, then analyze where it shows up on your taste buds. Did you know that in our back room we have a sample size roaster, along with cupping table? We use these to roast small batches of beans and then taste for the characteristics of coffee.
The process: our brokers send us samples, we roast small batches and then we cup them. We place an order and after the order is received, we cup again, making sure that the beans we received have the same characteristics as the sample. One of the flavor variances we recently experienced was with a bag of green coffee. The bag had been rained on, which changed its taste. Green coffee is very absorbent, so it's imperative that we cup after the order is received. More cupping info here.
Intrigued? Join us on Saturday, July 20th 8:30am - 11:30am
"Cupping with Roastmaster Jim"
|
Where in the world is Jim?
We work with farmers who have a passion for the crops that they yield. We only buy from farmers who follow the highest practices and who take good care of their workers. We can hear the pride in the conversations we have with the farmers and the community members; typically, they can't wait to share the crop with those who enjoy a good cup. And sometimes we have the opportunity to travel to those farms.
This photo is of Jim in Colombia at a nursery of coffee seedlings. For more info about our coffee, click here.

Tea Time!
Summertime means Iced Tea and we can help! We have several teas that are wonderful iced. Our recommendations include: Ceylon, Village Gold, PG Tips, Lychee teas.
Our Tea Brewing Tips:
START with fresh, great tasting cold water
WARM the teapot with steamy water and discard the waters
MEASURE approximately 1 tsp. of tea leaves per 6 oz. cup of water
STORE tea leaves in an airtight container away fro heat and sunlight to retain freshness. Tea can be stored for up to one year in this manner.
Click here for all the details!
*for Iced Tea, brew double strength and dilute with iced cubes*

Spices and More Spices!
This home spice rack was created by Pattie, one our regular customers. She buys her spices at the Village Roaster and all we can say is...WOW! Thanks Pattie for the inspiration! (BTW, we do sell spice jars and we have three types available:
Speaking of spices, for the summertime, we like to remind you that we carry Pickling Spices to turn your summer produce into tasty treats!
Another interesting spice is our Cottage Cheese spice. Don't let the name fool you...try it more than cottage cheese - we recommend it for salmon, on a baked potato, etc. It's wonderful!
