March 2013

Greetings!

It's not too early to plan for summer
Though it's just March (and most days in Seattle are still cold and drizzly), some of my students have been asking about summer music programs.

I heartily recommend that they attend a summer music camp, even though that means that they won't come to me during their weeks away.

In fact, some deadlines are past or soon to close!

Summer music camps: The benefits for teachers
  • Students will take their practice more seriously as they prepare for the summer camp master classes, placement test, or sight reading.
  • A music program can jump start motivation for the lagging student.
  • Students will return with new ideas that you can use in your teaching.
  • Students almost always return with a new commitment to music.
  • Students and teachers get a break from each other and a new start to the lessons.
  • You get one more hour to enjoy the sun.

Summer music camps: The benefits for students

  • You may face the end of the summer with regrets if all you do is relax. Summer camps can give you a focus and keep you practicing.
  • Intensive music sessions and just being around other devoted, interested kids can encourage you to excel.
  • Regional or national camps can give you an idea of how you compare to others of your age and experience.
  • Summer camps expose you to other teacher's ideas.
  • Advanced students and college professors will have a chance to meet and "interview" each other.
  • If you love the life of all-day music at camp, then perhaps you're cut out for the life of a musician.
  • Music camps are known for introducing friends for life!

What to look for in a summer music program

Learn all you can about the daily activities and goals of the camp.

  • Where is the camp located? Is it going to be worth the cost of a plane ride for one week?
  • Are there social activities? Is that something you want?
  • Does the camp specialize in one instrument? Is it mainly a week-long master class? Are there ensemble opportunities?
  • How much individual attention is there?
  • What is the mix of older and younger kids?
  • What is the living situation?
  • Are audition tapes required? Are the campers grouped by skill or age?
  • What are the qualifications of the instructors?
