The Funnies
Smiley Face

June 2012

Greetings!

I just hosted my annual Mother's Day Gala; it's always the social event of the year. Students play in ensembles complete with costumes and funny skits. There is such a feeling of community as the kids had to plan their costumes, skits, and introductions and then share in a potluck dinner.

Scheduling the recital for Mother's Day (or the day before), is a clever way to give the recital more meaning by honoring the moms who make our jobs possible and our lives easier.

I buy each mom a present (through the years these have included pot holders, carrying bags, candles, vases, salad bowls), we take their picture, and each student writes a personal card to their mom. What's not to love?

The More The Merrier

If you're looking for a way to bring your studio together and create a sense of family, try ensembles. Solo recitals can make students quake in their boots, but there is security and comradeship in numbers. (If the kids get nervous, call it a party instead of a recital.)

Students get to know each other better just by having to schedule rehearsals and practice, and as we all know, ensembles teach musicianship and are tons of fun.

Having only ensembles play also allows your entire studio to perform in one recital without it being 4 hours long!

Let The Students Handle The introductions

Instead of writing program notes or having you introduce each group, let the ensemble members interview each other and share 20 interesting bits of information with the audience.

Questions such as:

  • "If you were a piece of furniture, what would you be?"
  • "What is your blood type?"
  • "What is your most embarrassing moment?"
  • "Do you snore?"

Give the audience insight into the players and a hearty laugh!

Stuck in the  Recital Rut?

Try these fun ideas:

  • New kids recital: A venue for the students and families who just started in your studio to get to know each other by sharing fun facts about themselves before they perform.
  • Halloween recital: How can you not have fun when you're wearing a costume?
  • Tell me a story recital: Students share stories they create about their pieces. It's amazing how much more dramatic the playing becomes and how much more fun the listening is.
  • Recital from hell: A studio favorite, also called the "Distraction Recital." Do everything you can to break your students' concentration including talking, banging the door and ordering pizza with anchovies!

MTNA news

I'm happy to share with you the news that my student, Elise Kim, won 2nd place in the MTNA national contest in NYC.

I also am honored to have been chosen to serve on the new "All For One" MTNA committee, which will be brainstorming ways to bring non-pianists into this wonderful organization.

Flute

Good news, flute fans. You have prehistoric company -- flutes go back at least 42,000 years, longer ago than previously reported, conclude archaeologists looking at the likely era of the first modern human occupation of Europe.

And we thought we knew what the oldest profession is -- it's being a flutist!
