Michigan 4-H Today
|
|
|
Welcome to Michigan State University Extension 4-H Youth Development!
|
|

Michigan 4-H is joining in celebrating a special anniversary: 100 years ago, the Smith-Lever Act was signed into law. The idea behind the act was to take the wisdom and knowledge from the land-grant institutions and make them available to people in their everyday lives. Part of that involved finding ways to reach out to youth.
Michigan 4-H has done this is by helping kids - through a multitude of project areas - develop life skills such as critical thinking, problem solving and decision making. These will help them become leaders and tomorrow's successful, resilient adults. As a result:
- Kids who participate in Michigan 4-H programs are much more likely to contribute to their communities than those not involved in 4-H.
- We're getting kids interested in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) outside the classroom.
- Michigan 4-H youth are more likely to go on for post high-school education than their peers.
- They are also more likely to apply to and enroll at MSU than the average Michigan high-school graduate, and to graduate on time than the average MSU freshman.
Further evidence that our 4-H'ers are getting the message about the importance of higher education may be found in the fact that 55 of the 61 MSU Pre-College Scholarships awarded in 2013-14 went to 4-H precollege program participants! More about this below.
So, now we have a favor to ask you: Help Michigan 4-H win a $10,000 science sponsorship from HughesNet to support science activities at this year's 4-H Exploration Days. Voting is simple and quick, and ends at 11:59 pm (EST) on May 1. Click here to vote. Then, please help spread the word!

From October 17 to 19, 2013, Maeve Alflen, a long-time member of Leelanau County 4-H, attended the Global Youth Institute World Food Prize Symposium, where she presented her paper, Bringing Prosperity Through Nourishment. The paper's main focus was providing assistance and awareness to those who are hungry in Uganda. The entire story is here.
For the past three years, the Detroit International Academy (DIA) for Young Women has been home to The Integrated Intellectuals 4-H Club (members pictured left). In December, this group of young women used their passion for community service to help students gain access to the Detroit College Promise (DCP) scholarship. Read the story here.
Fourth- and fifth-grade students at Au Gres-Sims Elementary School used underwater remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) to study 320 to 500 feet of rivers, creeks and streams this school year. As a result of this in-school experience, two 4-H volunteers started an afterschool 4-H club where members build their own underwater ROVs. The club plans to compete in the
Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE) Regional Competition in June at the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary.
The entire story is available here. March 16 to 19 saw 73 high school-aged students from 25 Michigan counties participate in 4-H Capitol Experience held in Lansing. The students took part in the event to learn about state government and the importance of their voice in state policy. You can read all about it here.

Coming Soon
Tickets are available now (until April 18) for the 2014 4-H Science Day with the Lansing Lugnuts on April 26. The event provides a unique opportunity for both 4-H and non4-H youth and their families to explore the exciting world of science, while enjoying a game of baseball. It features hands-on learning activities at more than 10 science stations, as well as a chance to discover first-hand how science intersects with everyday life. All 4-H members and their families are invited to come in the ballpark early. Those arriving at 12 pm can start seeing science in action (for example, how ballparks keep their fields green and the science behind their favorite treat). At 12:45, attendees can participate in a pitching demonstration and ride the inflatable games for free until the gates open. In addition, 4-H groups will lead the 4-H pledge, and sing both the national anthem and God Bless America. Those interested in those activities, should email Leah Christie on or before April 11. Tickets are available online for $10 each. Children 2 and under are free. The 4-H Outdoor Adventure Challenge (OAC) uses the the outdoors to lead young people in activities that are both physically and mentally stressful. Through 4-H Outdoor Adventure Challenge, participants learn canoeing, kayaking, backpacking, hiking, outdoor survival and safety skills. Most importantly, they learn to communicate with other group members to plan, organize and conduct their own activities in the outdoors, and they learn the skills necessary to deal with stressful situations that may occur in any setting in their lives. Check it out now; the deadline for enrollment and Level 1 orientation sign up is April 18, 2014.
Make a global connection through the Michigan 4-H International Exchange Program. Exchange
opportunities provide families and communities with global and cultural competence. Such opportunities may include traveling overseas or becoming a host family. Or if traveling or hosting is a challenge. Michigan 4-H also has the Michigan 4-H China Art Exchange Program available. In addition, there are many activities in the new Michigan 4-H Backpack to Adventure: Youth Leaders in a Global World (4H1643) curriculum, available in print or electronic versions.
Do you know groups who are looking to learn more about insects or urban wildlife? Are you interested in providing opportunities for participation in real-world scientific research? Do you need kid-friendly projects? If you answered "yes" to any of these questions and you would like to learn more, the citizen-science projects, Backyard Bark Beetles and the School of Ants , are seeking participants for their research on some of the tiny, amazing animals that live in our backyards. These projects are a fun and exciting way to learn and, at the same time, to contribute to serious scientific research. The web sites above provide all that you need to know to get started right away!
The Animal Science Anywhere lesson series is designed to help leaders engage 4-H youth in learning more about the science and life skills involved in animal- and veterinary-science projects. Youth may work in teams or individually to accomplish the lesson objectives. Lessons are flexible, providing adaptations for various locations, ages and audiences. The lessons are linked to numerous 4-H animal-science pages or can be located at the link above.

This is a newsletter for and about Michigan 4-H Youth Development. It is a means by which we can communicate with one another and promote our great program impacts, showcase resources, spotlight staff, volunteers, members, alumni and curriculum. We will be happy to include Internet links that will take the reader to the pertinent information. To help highlight articles, we would like to include pictures. So, send us a few pictures with your article. Be sure they are the highest-possible resolution and do not embed them in the text.
