Many Ways to Tell the Library Story

Public librarians are hustling facts and figures together for the annual town report. Recent workshops suggest some ideas to add interest and clarity to the story the director decides to tell. Linda Braun (this summer's Tech Trends workshop) suggested using images and video to convey stories. Her Learnist page has great links.  Take a look at #12, Infographics for Library Advocacy at yalsa.ala.org. Photos and colorful numbers light up basic statistics about library use. For example, what was the busiest month? Find a copyright-free image and put it behind the statement. In the example, "March is the month with the most visits: 5,335," the image is a buoyant crop of red tulips in bloom. Use YouTube.com to explain the why behind the library-to show what has happened in the library. Tumblr, Learnist and Pinterest are other online tools that add image and video to expand the library message. Read more.

Apply for The Ezra Jack Keats Minigrant!

For the 25th year the Ezra Jack Keats Foundation has put out a call for minigrant proposals for children's programs in schools and public libraries. Examples of projects which have been funded in the past include:

* an ongoing pen pal project bringing together disparate communities
* a multicultural portrait project
* an art project culminating in an art show, a mural or a quilt
* bookmaking
* creating and performing a puppet show

* an intergenerational journal or activity

 

These are just sample projects; they welcome new ideas and innovative programming.

 

All minigrant applications must be submitted electronically. To help applicants, there is a video tutorial explaining the process on the website. The deadline for submission of proposals for the $500 minigrant award is March 15, 2013.  Winners will be announced starting on May 15. Applications are available online at the Foundation's website:

Summer Materials Arriving @Libraries

Since we have already had snow and daylight is dwindling, we are now thinking about the sun and warmth of next summer when most of the country's public libraries (including those in Vermont) will be holding programs on the theme of underground. This theme was developed by the Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP), a grassroots consortium of 49 member states and the District of Columbia. It includes a children's program, "Dig Into Reading"; a young adult program, "Beneath the Surface;" and an adult one, "Groundbreaking Reads." Read more

Ready for School Literacy Training

Preschoolers need rich language and math experiences in order to succeed in earlyliteracy logoschool, and public libraries are perfect places to provide these experiences. In order to help Vermont's libraries do just that, the Vermont Early Literacy Initiative, co-sponsored by the Vermont Department of Libraries  (VTLIB) and the Vermont Center for the Book (VCB), has launched its next step programming: "Ready for School."

 

Ready for School training was offered to the Vermont libraries that participated in the first Vermont Early Literacy Training held in 2010, which was targeted at babies and toddlers, and 19 libraries were able to participate (a total of 26 people), in a two day training on October 23 and 24 at Lake Morey Resort in Fairlee. New Children's Program Directory 

There is now a brand new edition (the 13th!) of "Programs for Children: a   Directory of Performers and Speakers" containing over 100 pages listing people who do programs in schools and public libraries in Vermont. Included are authors, illustrators, magicians, musicians, environmentalists and many more. All the information you need to find the perfect performer is included: a description of the program, contact information and the fee. Please note that inclusion in this directory does not constitute a recommendation; it is informational only, and it is up to the entity hiring to check references. Set immediately following the Armenian massacre in 1915, the book gives a window into another culture. The plot shows how understanding a different culture can help lead us towards peace. The Public Library Association (PLA) offers Turning the Page Online at: http://www.ala.org/pla/education/turningthepage. Six modules help trustees, Friends and staff learn the elements of storytelling to elected officials and neighbors. Whether the library needs to get the word out or go for "The Big Ask," PLA has researched strategies and techniques to get the job done. The best story is the right one for the teller and the listener- when the teller knows the audience and can pull ideas together that work for that person or group.

 

The Vermont Community Foundation is interested in good stories, too. The recent Storytelling Workshops with Barbara Ganley, founder and director of Community Expressions, LLC, gave libraries and other nonprofits a chance to construct and present stories. Ganley's resources are available for librarians to use at http://community-expressions.com/resources-3/resources-for-vcf-storytelling-workshops/.  The eight word mission, finding beginning/middle/end, and using images from Flickr to grow an idea are useful exercises in creating a story.

In addition to the three sections promoting these programs in the manual, there is an early literacy section with ideas to use with preschoolers. Soon VTLIB will send out a mailing to all Vermont libraries which will include:

  • The summer manual with sections for all four age level programs plus a DVD containing all the same information.
  • A catalog from Highsmith/Upstart featuring related incentives and printed materials.
  • A one page order form for bookmarks, reading records, certificates and posters, all of which VTLIB pays for. Please note that libraries wanting to order incentives or other things not on the order form must pay for them themselves. CSLP is paying half of the cost of postage this year.
  • A booklet of summer programs for libraries featuring some of Vermont's finest performers. Libraries can apply for a $100 grant to help pay for these performances, and VTLIB will fund at least 50 of the applications.

In March there will be workshops with information and ideas for programming, displays and materials for summer programming. Exact dates will be announced at the end of December.

ReadyReady for School Literacy Training

Preschoolers need rich language and math experiences in order to succeed in school, and public libraries are perfect places to provide these experiences. In order to help Vermont's libraries do just that, the Vermont Early Literacy Initiative, co-sponsored by the Vermont Department of Libraries (VTLIB) and the Vermont Center for the Book (VCB), has launched its next step programming: "Ready for School."

 

Ready for School training was offered to the Vermont libraries that participated in the first Vermont Early Literacy Training held in 2010, which was targeted at babies and toddlers, and 19 libraries were able to participate (a total of 26 people), in a two day training on October 23 and 24 at Lake Morey Resort in Fairlee.

 

In addition to information about how preschoolers learn about literacy and math, the librarians learned the basics of the Common Core State Standards so that they could understand the skills that preschoolers will need once they get to kindergarten. Pat Fitzsimmons, the Common Core Coordinator for the Vermont Department of Education (DOE), delivered the keynote speech. She has taught at the preschool and kindergarten levels as well as working for DOE, so she was the perfect person to pull it all together.

 

Sally Anderson, the director of VCB, taught the majority of the workshop which was mainly about math activities for preschoolers. Using the book she wrote, How Many Ways Can You Make Five: A Parent's Guide to Exploring Math with Children's Books (Gryphon House, 2012) and her expertise from the multiyear half-a-million dollar National Science Foundation-funded project, "What's the Big Idea?" she taught basic concepts, and led participants in explorations.

 

Armed with this new knowledge and training, these librarians will conduct storytimes, parent programs and training for childcare providers on early language and math literacy for preschoolers. To facilitate the programming, they received ten books, six kinds of math materials (such as linking cubes and magnetic numbers), ten sets of books and materials for parents for each of three programs, and five sets of materials for childcare providers for their training.

 

Follow-up includes a webinar in January and a final training in May, 2013. As with all of the VELI programs, most of the funding came from Dr. Burnett Rawson, the founder and benefactor of the Winnie Belle Learned Fund of the Vermont Public Library Foundation. Supplementing that funding was a grant from the Henderson Foundation secured by VCB.

The author introduces us to the Janissaries who were the Ottoman empire's elite soldiers for 400 years. But 10 years earlier the Sultan crushed them when they became too powerful. Are the Janissaries staging a comeback?

Her daughter in Fairbanks, Alaska, gave her Looking for Alaska by Peter Jenkins (2001). Jenkins is the guy who wrote A Walk Across America. He moved his family to Seward, Alaska, for a year, and friends, acquaintances and fans from around the state arranged for him to meet interesting people and do interesting things.  "My daughter, when asked about the guy: gal ratio in Alaska, will reply, 'The odds are good - but the goods are odd.' This book gave me the chance to attend The Bachelor's Auction in Talkeetna, meet a Haida native and hear her passion for Haida culture and art, and set off to the (very) frozen and dangerous interior via dogsled."
