ACCRA, GHANA -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is conducting a week-long Agribusiness Trade Mission to Sub-Saharan Africa here, setting up meetings with local entities interested in establishing trade relations with U.S. companies.  The U.S. delegation, led by USDA Deputy Secretary Krysta Harden and including USA Rice and Arkansas Secretary of Agriculture Wes Ward, is the largest ever to visit West Africa.

Secretary Harden spoke at today's opening ceremony as did local ministers from Ghana, Ivory Coast, and Nigeria.

Tomorrow's agenda includes a cooking competition, part of the USA Rice lead Global Based Initiative (GBI) activity, where foodservice professionals will vie to prepare the best dish using U.S. rice, poultry, and peanuts.  The aim of the event is to increase usage of these products and generate positive media coverage on local TV, radio, and press.

During the past decade, there has been a quiet revolution in the way many scholars and advocates think about aid. We can call it the post-theory approach. The idea is that rich countries shouldn't see themselves as responsible for coming up with theories about how poor countries can become richer. Rather, the rich countries allow the poor ones to determine what they think needs to happen and then pay money to whoever comes up with an actual solution.

Science and Technology
In a new study in Nature Geoscience, researchers took another stab at estimating how much water is stored in our planet's crust, this time with tens of thousands more data points. They also looked at the age of that water, or how long it had been underground, to understand how quickly it can be replenished as humans keep pulling it out.
