USA Rice Forms Promotions Advisory Council in Mexico

 | Hoping they reach for U.S. Rice! |
MEXICO CITY - The USA Rice Federation and Mexican promotion partners met last week to form a "Promotions Advisory Council." Thirty USA Rice promotion partners, including representatives from the two largest milling and packing companies, Central Market importers/wholesalers, the Basic Food Products Import Council (COAPROB), culinary schools, universities, professional chefs, magazine editors, government officials and others, all joined together to exchange ideas on improving and increasing the usage of U.S. origin rice in Mexico.
USA Rice will host consultative meetings with the Advisory Council at least twice per year, to ensure marketing programs are current and relevant, and continue to increase the sales of U.S. rice.
"We at Sam's Club see our sales of rice increase significantly as a result of working with USA Rice Federation," said Jose Luis Hernandez, Sam's Club, Tepeyac. "We hope for a long association with USA Rice."
Juan Luis Jasso, of the Instituto Politécnico Nacional, said, "USA Rice has done an impressive job at greatly increasing the awareness of rice as an economical and healthy alternative in people's diets, and we will help in expanding the reach through the creative ways discussed today."
Additionally, USA Rice previewed the new American Origin logo currently being registered in Mexico. The new logo was well received, especially by the trade, millers, packers, and traders. "This is a well-conceived program," said Jesus Ramirez, of COAPROB. "It's a 'win-win' for members who take a more active role... the new logo, and other factors will help curb the use of lower quality rice from other origins."

Razerback Researchers Visit USA Rice
|
 | Razorback Researcher Roberts on Rice |
ARLINGTON, VA - Earlier today, researchers from the University of Arkansas' Division of Agriculture met with USA Rice Federation staff to jointly share research priorities for the coming year and to discuss ways the organizations can complement each other's efforts in outreach to growers.
Dr. Trenton Roberts, Assistant Professor of Soil Fertility/Testing with the Department of Crop, Soil, and Environmental Sciences highlighted his work on food safety as well as efforts to maximize grower yields and profitability, including the University's revolutionary N-STaR soil test available to rice farmers.
Dr. Richard Roeder, Associate Director at the University's Agriculture Experiment Station, shared sustainability and water quality programs, and suggested ways the University's work could help support the rice industry's application to establish a Regional Conservation Partnership Program with the USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service.

"This was a very informative and useful meeting," said Betsy Ward, USA Rice's President and CEO. "The research being undertaken by the University of Arkansas lines up well with the priorities we hear from our members in all sectors of the rice industry."
Ward went on to identify several areas where USA Rice could help the University get their messages out, including at this December's USA Rice Outlook Conference in Little Rock, and suggested the organizations get together at least on an annual basis.
