Rufas says, "The rain stopped, can we go for a walk now?"
|
Please join me in welcoming some new faces to Austin Dog Alliance. Jay Styles from Mix 94.7 who has joined our board of directors, Katie Bell as receptionist, and Katie Smith as Community Outreach Director.
Big thank you to our service dog training team - Elizabeth Smith, Susan Windham, Neitha Engert, Carolyn Adams, Michele Davis,
Viri Cereberes and Karen Duncan. To learn more about helping to train a service dog, please contact Elizabeth Smith.
If you have a few extra hours available on Saturday, we need help with our property maintenance tasks. The brush is threatening to take over our dog park and we have tree parts everywhere. We also need to clean out our gutters and pull weeds. Please join me from 9 - 2 on Saturday, June 6 - bring gloves, rakes, cutting tools and weed whackers.
Although the upcoming construction project to build a tribute garden, kennel and expanded job skills training center is not obvious yet on-site, a lot of behind the scenes work has started. We are actively seeking donations for the project - both financial and in-kind as construction tasks. Please contact us if you would like to learn more about helping us build.
Construction is scheduled to start when summer camps end. The new building will give us the ability to provide more service dogs and to improve the experience for students in our job skill training program.
Thank you for supporting Austin Dog Alliance.

Rain, Heat... Mosquitoes - Oh My! |
Big rains and summer heat are the perfect recipe for a big mosquito season, which means the perfect recipe for heartworms.
Heartworm infestation can happen to any dog, but dogs who live in hot, humid regions-conditions in which mosquitoes thrive-are at the greatest risk. Symptoms of heartworm infestation can include labored breathing, coughing, vomiting, weight loss and listlessness, and fatigue after only moderate exercise. However, some dogs exhibit no symptoms at all until late stages of infection so the best course is prevention.
Heartworm is easy preventable with an inexpensive, chewable pill available with a vet's prescription. If you're dog isn't currently on heartworm protection, it's not too late - call your vet today! (Source: ASPCA)
