Letter from Executive Director

Debi KrakarDear Friends,

Every 65 minutes, a United States Veteran commits suicide.  Every 65 minutes, one of our Veterans is suffering so much that they feel that not being here is the only solution.  Every 65 minutes, a mother loses her son or daughter.

Veterans Allen and Pat share how service dogs changed their lives
Veterans Allen and Pat share how service dogs changed their lives

Approximately 15% of our Veterans suffer from post traumatic stress disorder.   Our Hounds for Heroes - PTSD Service Dogs program is designed to provide comfort, healing and hope to our Veterans.  If we can prevent even just one Veteran from taking their own life, every moment of work and every penny we spend will be worthwhile.

Two of our Veterans, Pat and Allen, share their experience with war, coming home, PTSD and the life changing benefits of being matched with an Austin Dog Alliance service dog.  Enjoy!

The Hounds for Heroes program is powerful and we are getting ready to announce plans to expand it.  More information coming soon.

If you know a Veteran who is struggling with PTSD, contact us to learn more about the healing power of a service dog.  If you enjoy training dogs and would like to help us train a service dog, please contact us.

On a lighter note, we are about a month away from summer camp season.  Its a really fun time of year at our ranch because every day brings kids and dogs and laughter.  See below for more information.

Sincerely,

Debi Krakar

Is my child appropriate for camp? While Austin Dog Alliance staff are very experienced with children who have high functioning autism and other challenges, these camps are designed for typically developing students. Some of the activities tend to be over stimulating to students who have autism. To discuss your child's unique needs, please contact our camp director.

Courage Walk: "Every step was worth it" - Jay Styles

Levi & Jay thank
for their sponsorship.
Austin Dog Alliance would like to thank Jay Styles and mix 94.7 for his Courage WALK to raise awareness for veterans with PTSD and raise money for our Hounds for Heroes service dog program. Jay said he embarked on this effort to "bring awareness to what is considered a taboo subject but shouldn't be" - the mental health of our veterans.

Jay's passion is more than miles and dollars because inspiration cannot be measured. Through Jay's 100 mile walk over five days, he inspired everyone from firefighters to veterans to school children and gave hope to those who might feel their struggles are overlooked when they return home from war

You can still express your support for Jay's efforts by texting the word HOUNDS to 41444. Or make an online donation.

Become a Bow Wow Reading Team... in time for next school year!

One of our missions at Austin Dog Alliance is to help children gain confidence in their reading and, hopefully, foster a life-long love of reading through the comfort of dogs.

Currently we have Pet Therapy Bow Wow Reading teams visiting 56 different libraries and schools. However, we also have 106 unfulfilled requests from libraries and schools for Bow Wow Reading teams!

If you've taken a few of our basic dog manners classes and think Pet Therapy might be right for you and your dog - you could be in a school with your dog by the time school starts up in the Fall!

Step 1. Pet Therapy classes are an advanced class, and prior training experience is required. Your dog must be at least 1 year old. The ideal dog is good around other dogs and enjoys being hugged by strangers.  Therapy is not a good fit for shy or nervous dogs.

Step 2. Sign up for a 6 week Therapy Team Training ($190). We have many classes currently scheduled:

Step 3. Practice, practice, practice. The 6 week class is designed to help you pass the evaluation required to be an Austin Dog Alliance pet therapy team. But every trainer will tell you that the more you practice with people and in public places, the more confident your dog and YOU will be in your skills as a team.

Step 4. After completing Therapy Team classes, sign up for a Pet Therapy Evaluation ($35).

Step 5. After passing the Pet Therapy Evaluation, become a member of our Austin Dog Alliance Pet Therapy program ($75 for one year or $150 for three years). This covers a background check, insurance, volunteer t-shirt, free continuing education seminars, yearly award dinner and all the behind-the-scenes administrative coordinating.

Step 6. Sign up and attend the FREE Bow Wow Reading Dog Seminar required for all teams working in libraries and schools.
