SPRING! into Agility

Dog Jump Agility Field
Spring! into outdoor fun before Texas Summer hits!

It's finally SPRING! and April is one of the best months for outside fun in Texas. Enjoy the weather and some quality time with your dog by trying some agility training.

Why Agility? Learning the commands, skills, and techniques:

  • Builds the dog's confidence. Dogs are just like us, they like saying: "Hey, I can do this!"
  • Exercises the mind and the body. (Dog and handler!)
  • Strengthens the owner handler relationship.
  • Just plain fun for both owner and dog.
The following classes are starting in April with plenty of spots open:

Level 1 - Introduction -Brand new to agility. Dog must have basic manners training.
  • April 4 - May 9 Saturdays 9 am - 10 am
  • April 7 - May 12 Tuesdays 10:40 am - 11:40 am
  • April 27 - June 15 Mondays 10:40 am - 11:40 am
  • April 29th - June 3 Wednesdays 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Level 2 - Beginner -Must have completed Level 1 Intro Agility
  • April 27 - June 15 Mondays 9:30 am - 10:30 am
  • April 29 - June 3 Wednesdays 7:40 pm - 8:40 pm

Level 3 - Advanced - is offered as often as we have demand. If interested, please contact Kathleen.

Have Questions? Wish we'd offer a different time or day?

Contact our agility trainer. We constantly update classes and can create a new class when there's enough interest.

Designing a Dog Friendly Yard

In Central Texas we are starting spring and bringing our lawns and beds out of the winter. But before you spend lots of money on the colorful plants at the nursery, plan ahead with your dog's needs in mind.

Important Safety Considerations
  • Provide access to clean water at all times. If your dog can't find clean water, she will find any water that can often contain pesticides, mosquito larvae, and other run-off contaminants.
  • Provide adequate shelter from rain, wind, sun, and heat. Dogs generally need to be inside or have extra protections for temperatures above 80 degrees Fahrenheit or below 45 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Make sure the fence is secure and that all latches are too high for your dog to reach. If you have little dogs, get low and look from the dogs point of view for potential escape routes.
  • Avoid planting anything poisonous to dogs. The ASPCA has a list of poisonous plants that includes photos.
Additional Lawn Options
  • If your dog runs the fence line, avoid planting there and provide a gravel path instead. Or, plant along the fence line but install a barrier.
  • If your dog likes to dig, consider creating an area designed for digging. Redirect any "bad" digging to this new designated digging spot.
  • Train your dog to use one area of the yard for elimination. To do this, when he needs a potty break, take him out on a leash to the new area you've designated for him. Keep doing this until the area has a well established scent and your dog will seek out this area when he is released off-leash into your yard.
  • Dogs often roll in new soil or compost. Until you can consistently keep your dog out of these areas, try using a products that repel dogs such as vinegar and ammonia sprinkled throughout the beds.
