Greetings from the Desk of the Executive Director |
Greetings: Thirty Nine days until Summer Camp begins. Woohoo! We love summer camp season! Austin Dog Alliance buzzes with all the energy and enthusiasm of smiling happy children and tail-wagging happy dogs. We are busy ordering craft supplies and t-shirts and contacting all types of dog-related speakers. Our goal is to make each season fresh and more exciting than the year before. This year, we have added a special camp, "All About Puppies" for students ages 5 - 7. For our special campers ages 8 - 10 who are challenged by autism, sensory processing disorder or ADHD, we offer a special week of camp tailored just for them. While many of the camps are already full, we do still have some openings. To learn more: New class of Special Dogs starting after Memorial Day. April was a very busy and exciting month for our Special Dogs program. Beau, Angel and Lia found their forever homes with special need children. I'm not sure who was happier; the dogs, the children or the parents. We put so much effort into getting these dogs ready for adoption that when they go home, it's quite emotional. Kinda like sending your child off to college. You have done all you can to prepare them, and now it is time to let go so that they can reach their full potential. Roxie is making great progress with her training to be a service dog. We are looking for an adult adopter who would benefit from a PTSD Service Dog. We will start a new class of Special Dogs late May/early June. We are looking for very experienced dog owners or trainers who are interested in fostering and training a carefully selected dog for about 10 weeks this summer. Team meetings will be Fridays at 12:30. We have secured back-up boarding to cover summer vacations. To learn more, contact me or get started by completing a foster application. Dogs and Donuts - Learn more about our job skills program. Join us for some hot coffee, donuts and some dog interaction at our open house on Thursday, May 29 from 9:15 - 10:30 AM. Tour our facility and learn more about our job skills training and placement program (S+CORE!) for young adults ages 16 - 25. Please RSVP. Enjoy your day. The dogs and I are off for our morning walk.

Special Dogs for Special Needs
Partnering with Make A Wish Foundation |
Lia, one of the dogs in our Special Dogs for Special Needs program, has found her very own special girl named AJ.
Through a partnership between the Make-A-Wish Foundation and Austin Dog Alliance, Lia now has a new forever home and a powerful bond forged with a little girl.
AJ's wish was for a female yellow lab. We are very grateful to the wonderful and passionate folks who run Heart of Texas Lab Rescue for sharing Lia with us. We are also thankful for Dawn Wasicek who spent many, many hours training Lia.

"Foster Confessions"
Name withheld by request | |
Before I knew what happened, my fingers dialed Judy McCarthy's number and I heard my voice leave a message saying I could pick up the puppy after work (I'd just checked my phone and seen a post requesting a foster for a shelter puppy).
Then it hit me, the "uh-oh". I'd forgotten my spouse. Usually, before bringing a living creature into our home (that both of us will ultimately tend to) we honor the principle of discussing it with one another. Somehow, principle had flown out the window and I'd unilaterally offered to foster a puppy.
Oh well, I thought, someone else had probably called first, there's little chance they'll actually need ME to foster, right?
Wrong... Judy called back, saying the puppy was mine. Whoops. How was I going to explain bringing this puppy home? I started making up my story formulating a logical explanation.
I called my husband and it went straight to voicemail. "Honey...? Umm... there's an emergency situation with a puppy...". I can't even remember what I said in the rest of the voicemail, probably just random words.
I picked up Foster Puppy that evening and called home. Mr. Honey answered. He loves animals (we have our own totally loved and spoiled pets) but he wasn't keen on the idea of fostering a non-house-trained-probably-cries-through-the-night puppy.
Arriving home, I crossed my fingers and hoped for the best. When Mr. Honey saw the puppy, the stern look he'd prepared softened and I heard "well, he is kinda cute". Whew, I may survive this with minimal pain and agony discussion, I thought.
That night, as I prepared a cozy little crate for Foster Puppy, I placed him on our bed, where Mr. Honey was reading. After arranging the bedding in the crate, I turned around and Foster Puppy had his two front paws on Mr. Honey's chest and was licking his face. Mr. Honey was trying hard not to smile, but resistance was futile. The power of puppies.
Judy and Carla, who lead the Rescue/Foster/Adoption team, have a knack for finding great shelter dogs that become wonderful family pets. They make it so easy -- my responsibility was purely to care for my foster. Behind the scenes, applications were reviewed and phone calls were made. Judy emailed me the selected prospective adopter's information, and we arranged a meet-and-greet. Foster Puppy quickly found his forever home where he'll be loved and cherished (and his antics displayed on Facebook, I'm sure).
You may wonder, will I foster again for Austin Dog Alliance? I already have. ;)

| Volente Olive Fest 2014 |
We appreciate the donations and proceeds from raffle tickets sold. It was a beautiful day to be out at Volente Beach - there's nothing better than sitting by the lake, watching the sun go down, and watching the boats sail in, all while listening to a live Brazilian band. The event was hosted by BCL of Texas. We appreciate our volunteers who represented Austin Dog Alliance and we appreciate all the donors who help us succeed in our mission to improve the well-being of others through programs incorporating the powerful bond between humans and dogs. |
