Debi Krakar

Greetings from the Desk of the Executive Director

Happy Spring:

"Sail beyond the horizon; fly higher than you ever thought possible; magnify your existence by helping others; be kind to people and animals of all shapes and sizes; be true to what you value most; shine your light on the world; and be the person you were born to be." Blake Beattie

At Austin Dog Alliance, the love of dogs provides the foundation for some pretty amazing acts of giving.  This month, I'd like to share with you some of the behind-the-scenes joy of our Special Dogs program.

The Special Dogs for Special Needs program started in 2010. Our theory was to train the friendliest dogs we found in the shelter and place them in homes with special-needs children. We just worked with one or two dogs at a time. The program showed great promise and the families that adopted our dogs often said that they didn't realize how much they needed the unconditional love of a dog in their home.

Special Dogs at Mighty FIne
Michele and Sylvia enjoy lunch at Mighty Fine Burgers in Cedar Park while Special Dogs Roxi and Misty practice proper restaurant behavior.

Earlier this year, we decided to train a group of six dogs at once. We

asked six volunteers to commit to 8 - 12 weeks of training a dog for a minimum of 45 minutes each day. Some of the volunteers who were not experienced dog trainers agreed to meet for two classes with us each week as well. Last week, we progressed to the point of taking our Special Dogs out in public to generalize their skills. OMG - the dogs exceeded our expectations. After talking with some of the volunteers, it has become clear that they are not just working 45 minutes a day, they are training in their homes all day and taking the dogs everywhere. It's a lot of work. The amazing part in my mind is that they are all really happy. It is as if they are all empowered by the knowledge that they are doing something bigger than themselves. When they show me the skills that their dogs have mastered, they literally glow.

They are doing something that will magnify their existence in this world. The other side of the program is working with the potential adopters. In an effort to better understand how our Special Dogs could be further trained to be PTSD Service Dogs, I've had the opportunity to meet with psychiatrists from the Veterans Administration and with Dr. Tania Glenn who specializes in working with veterans. A humbling experience for me to learn how combat changes the brains of our veterans and how they will continue to sacrifice long after battle. I've also had the humbling experience of working with some awe-inspiring parents of children with extensive medical issues. Realizing that others face challenges WAY bigger than any in my own life is a good way to keep the little annoyances in life in perspective.

My belief is that our Special Dogs and PTSD Service Dogs will change the lives of the six families that adopt them. Paying it forward and dogs - a powerful combination.

Please join me in thanking this Spring's Special Dog training team:  Susan Windham, Michele Cuteri, Steve Corona, Donna Fessler, Kathleen Majcher, Sylvia Troconis and Dawn Wasicek. Special thanks to Adoption Program Director Judy McCarthy for helping us find the dogs.

Thank you for giving me the joy and pleasure of serving you and our community every day.

Thanks for supporting Austin Dog Alliance!

It was an amazing 24 hours.  Very exciting when it kicked off and then watching the leader board for 24 hours was riveting.  The last hour was like watching a close sporting event in over-time.

Thanks to your donations, we raised over $10,000 for programs in pet therapy outreach, job skills training, animal-assisted autism programs teaching social skills, "Special Dogs for Special Needs", and rescue/adoption of dogs deserving a second chance at a loving forever home.
April is Heartworm Awareness Month

Lina overcame heartworm disease and is now a therapy dog
for Austin Dog Alliance

Heartworm disease is present in all 50 states, and it takes just ONE bite from an infected mosquito to transmit the disease to your pet.  Left untreated, heartworm disease causes damage to the heart, lungs, other organs and can ultimately result in death.

The best action is PREVENTION.  Talk to your veterinarian about monthly preventatives.

Once a pet is diagnosed with heartworm disease, the course of treatment is painful for the animal, involving injections to the lower back/lumbar area and clinic observation for potentially toxic reactions or complications. During treatment, which can take several months, the pet is confined to minimal activity.

Despite the intensity of heartworm treatment, dogs successfully completing the treatment can go on to live active lives.  One example is Lina, an Austin Dog Alliance therapy dog.  Lina was adopted from the Austin Humane Society in late 2011 by pet therapy team member Traci.  Thanks to a partnership between the Humane Society and a local veterinary clinic, Lina's heartworm treatment costs were subsidized.

Lina successfully completed heartworm treatment in 2012, was able to return to full activities (including training for pet therapy) and Traci and Lina joined the Austin Dog Alliance pet therapy team in 2013.  Lina is living proof that dogs with heartworm CAN overcome the disease and thrive in their environment.

Get all the facts about heartworm disease at the American Heartworm society website or the FDA.

Roxi - Special Dog
Last month we told you about Our Special Dogs for Special Needs (SDSN) program and our new group of dogs undergoing training.  We are very excited to provide this service for the community - finding/training dogs for placement in homes with a special needs child or an adult with PTSD or anxiety.

Meet Roxi - this beautiful girl came to us from the Lockhart Animal Shelter.

Roxi is a loving, easygoing dog who has never met a stranger.  She has good dog socialization skills and should be easy to have around other dogs.  Roxi is in intensive training to learn the skills needed to be a PTSD Service Dog.  She has shown to be a quick learner, mastering basic manners skills within days and catching on quickly to new skills.

For more information, see our Special Dogs for Special Needs page here.  To meet our dogs, Lia, Angel, Misty, Roxi, Beau and Rocky, click here. Proof of diagnosis required to adopt.

K9 Nose Work
Attend an Informational Session with Jason Heng, CNWI ™   (April 13)

Have you heard of "K9 Nose Work" and wondered what it was all about?  Now is your chance to find out more!  Attend this informational session with your dog, or as an observer/auditor.

K9 Nose Work Informational Session

Sunday, April 13, 2014  (12:30-1:45PM)

K9 Nose Work is the fun search and scenting activity that all dogs and their people can enjoy.

  • Does your dog need a job?
  • Does your dog bounce off the walls when you get home from a long day at work?
  • Are you looking for a low impact sport for a retired agility or therapy dog?
  • Are you a low energy person with a high energy dog?

K9 Nose Work is designed to put that powerful dog nose to work.  No prior training is required.  It's a great activity for all dogs - even those with behavior issues.

Dogs start the sport by searching for food or toys and then target odors are added for those that wish to compete.  For those that want the challenge of competing, a nationwide sport is organized and governed by the National Association of Canine Scent Work (NACSW).  Your instructor, Jason Heng is a Certified K9 Nose Work(R) Instructor certified through NACSW™.

This course is offered with two price options:
     *  Working Spots - $35

     *  Auditor, no dog - $15

Reserve your spot and enroll online here
