This Week in History

Just after midnight on December 25, 1914, the majority of German troops engaged in World War I cease firing their guns and artillery.  At the first light of dawn, many of the German soldiers emerged from their trenches and approached the Allied lines across no-man's-land, calling out "Merry Christmas" in their enemies' native tongues. At first, the Allied soldiers feared it was a trick, but seeing the Germans unarmed they climbed out of their trenches and shook hands with the enemy soldiers. The men exchanged presents of cigarettes and plum puddings and sang carols and songs.

Drop It Off
A reminder - Village residents will have one more opportunity to bring garbage, recycling, GoodWill donations and anything electronic to the sled hill parking lot!  Head over on Thursday, January 3 from 3-6pm (Bayside Id required).

Holiday Tree & Wreath Collection

The Village will be collecting Holiday trees and/or wreaths again this year.  We ask that all metal or foreign items be removed from the materials as they will be chipped with all other yard waste materials.

These items will be picked up the following days:

  • Thursday & Friday - January 10 & 11
  • Thursday & Friday - January 17 & 18

Please make sure all trees or wreaths are curbside by 7am to ensure pickup.

Voluntary Water Update

Those interested in municipal water on a voluntary basis should contact Bayside resident Howard Feiges, who has helped champion the effort to connect those in his neighborhood, located in the southwest area of the Village.

The project, which is entering the final engineering phases, will then be sent out to bid in February, with construction tentatively scheduled for May/June of 2013.

As with many large projects, costs are derived by the number of participants, in order to achieve an economies of scale.  Those homes wishing to participate, and who are located in the project area, should contact Howard as soon as possible, to ensure they can be included in the process.  A recent article published in the BaysideNow outlines the effort to date.  Those who have already signed up to participate will be receiving additional information in January.

A Safe Ride Home

A reminder this New Year to make the necessary travel accommodations for a safe holiday.  For example, include the Milwaukee County Bus System in your plans.  Thanks to MillerCoors, Free Rides begin at 8 pm on Monday, December 31, 2011, and last until the end of regular service.

Check schedule times carefully and plan ahead so you know your return routing and times.  Thirteen main routes, serving many popular entertainment venues, will stay in operation past the end of regular schedules with half-hour service until 4 am.  Whether you take the bus or make other plans, celebrate safely for a great 2013.
