GLOBAL NOTES
New Memorandums of Understanding
ASTM has signed three new Memorandums of Understanding (MOU). The agreements were recently signed with the St. Kitts and Nevis Bureau of Standards (SKNBS), the Bureau Burundais de Normalisation (BBN) and the Namibian Standards Institution (NSI), bringing the total number of ASTM partnerships to 90. Through MOU agreements, global national standards bodies reference, adopt, or use ASTM standards as the basis of their national standards.

Experts from the national standards bodies of Bolivia, Pakistan and Singapore will visit ASTM headquarters from Oct. 27 to Nov. 20 as part of the Standards Expert Program. The Standards Expert Program (SEP) is a key benefit offered to MOU signatories. During their visit, the participants learn about the ASTM standards development process, attend the November Committee Week, visit government agencies and U.S.-based standards development organizations in Washington, D.C., and share information about their organizations.

DID YOU KNOW? . . . Fire Prevention
The National Fire Protection Association's (NFPA) Fire Prevention Week is Oct. 5-11. This annual campaign is held each year to keep the public informed about the importance of fire prevention. One of ASTM's oldest committees, E05 on Fire Standards, with more than 550 technical experts from 21 countries, works to eliminate injuries and fatalities from fire through the development of standards. E05 has a library of 70 fire hazard and fire risk assessment standards, including those suitable for use by regulatory officials. Topics covered by 19 subcommittees include buildings, structures, materials, products and assemblies; furnishings and contents; mechanical and electrical appliances and equipment; and transportation facilities. The committee uses appropriate experiences and analysis from actual fires to identify means for measuring the risk associated with fire or during the extinguishing process, and several E05 standards are included in the ASTM Building Codes. Legislation in all 50 U.S. states requires cigarettes to meet ASTM E2187, Test Method for Measuring the Ignition Strength of Cigarettes, in an attempt to reduce cigarette fires. This essential committee also provides guidance to labs performing fire tests, and monitors the public need for standards.
