New Committee on Industrial Biotechnology
Stakeholders in the field of industrial biotechnology, including representatives of the agricultural, medical and pharmaceutical industries, have joined together to form a new ASTM International technical committee - E62 on Industrial Biotechnology. Industrial biotechnology represents a move away from industry's reliance on non-renewable resources, turning instead to the use of sustainable biomass as a resource. Potential topics for E62 standards include feedstock biomass, determination of green content, life cycle analysis and drop-in chemical specifications. The committee welcomes participation from interested stakeholders[Full Story]

GLOBAL NOTES

China Outreach Focuses on 3D Printing, Additive Manufacturing
Pat Picariello, manager of ASTM Committees E57 on 3D Imaging Systems and F42 on Additive Manufacturing Technologies, promoted ASTM at several industry events in China in late June. Joined by staff from ASTM's China office, Picariello made a presentation on "Collaborative Standards Development for Additive Manufacturing: ASTM International Committee F42 and ISO TC 261," at the 1st Annual World Congress of 3D Printing in Dalian. He also presented information about ASTM activities to several other groups during his visit, including those from Northwestern Polytechnic University and the Shanghai Industrial Technology Institute, and participated in a member-training event with ASTM's cooperative partner, the Shanghai Institute of Standardization.

DID YOU KNOW? . . . Back to School

August is the time for back to school shopping, and stores and shopping malls are filled with students and parents as they stock up on supplies for the new school year. The list is often long - pens, pencils, art supplies, notebooks, book bags, and of course, the all important back-to-school wardrobe. If you are purchasing art supplies, don't forget to look for ASTM D4236, Standard Practice for Labeling Art Materials for Chronic Health Hazards. D4236 is part of a law that requires all artists' materials sold in the U.S., whether imported or manufactured in the country, must comply with the standard through material labeling. If you are looking for new clothing and apparel to start the year off right, ASTM Committee D13 on Textiles has you covered, with standards for a wide variety of apparel from suits, ties, dresses, blouses and dress shirts to coatsdenimt-shirts and scarves. D13's textile standards cover apparel sizing and body measurement as well as fabrics, yarns, flammability, UV protective fabrics, labeling and more.
