100th Years for T-Shirts
|
Although no firm history exists, in 1913 the plain t-shirt is adopted by the US Navy as a "light undershirt" replacing the less popular and cumbersome "union suit". Then in 1932, the USC football coach approached Jockey International to design a cotton undergarment to absorb sweat and prevent chafing. The modern day 'T" was born.
In 1942 the first T-shirt with words printed on it was issued by the US
Air Corps Gunnery School and was featured on the cover of LIFE magazine.
From its humble beginnings to improve comfort to the ubiquitous expression and extension of ourselves, the T-Shirt is an American classic that will stand for another 100 years or more.
