Peter Fedor, the effervesent host of Sew Party Cafe', is an RN at C.S. Mott Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor. When he was only 6 years old he occasionally went to work with his grandmother who worked at a dry cleaner as the alterations and repair person. While grandma worked, Peter learned to sew as he played on an industrial treadle machine where he eventually made a pillow out of denim scraps. After serving in the US Army Reserve as a Medical Specialist, Peter pursued his nursing degree. During his rotation as a nursing student he was profoundly touched by the innocence of young patients. Peter knew this was his calling and one only needs to hear him speak of his career as a pediatric nurse to know for certain, he is happy in his vocation and his patience are blessed to have him as their nurse. After becoming a nurse, Fedor's sewing interest resurfaced when he wanted to make his first scrub top. A Bishop Sewing course was his first step toward his adult sewing education. Then Peter purchased his first embroidery machine and needed further instruction, when much to his delight, he discovered an American Sewing Expo registration brochure. Peter was, as he says; "like a kid in a candy store" as he poured over the class offerings and filled out his registration form. Fedor not only found a place to learn everything about the sewing arts; he also found a fun and friendly atmosphere of learning, creativity and great friends! It wasn't long before Peter became a classroom volunteer and then quickly moved on to be the team leader of the Sew Party Café, an interactive event where attendees stop to relax and learn while making a simple sewing project. Peter's current sewing projects include embroidering child-friendly characters on his scrubs. These designs open communication pathways to his young patients and their parents, and is just one of the ways he puts his patients at ease and creates an atmosphere of trust. And even though Peter's mother never let him use her sewing machine she did instill a passion of sewing for charity in Peter's life. He carries on her charitable legacy by regularly making pillowcases to give to patients at Children's Hospital and works with the Michigan Peace Team turning t-shirts into shopping bags. We hope you will stop by the Sew Party Cafe' to make a project, learn a new skill and meet Peter! |
