CAN I GET A WITNESS?
-Gary Holloway
That was the theme of the 70th Annual Pepperdine Bible Lectures in Malibu, CA, April 30-May 3, focusing on the Book of Revelation.
It was a joy to be again on the campus of Pepperdine University (associated with Churches of Christ) and to experience great teaching and fellowship.
Besides hearing marvelous presentations (more on that below), John York from Lipscomb University and I presented on our upcoming book from Leafwood Publishers, Unfinished Reconciliation: Justice, Racism,
and Churches of Christ.
The great joys of attending these lectures were telling many about the ministry of World Convention and reconnecting with friends including board members Ken Young and Doug Foster, Fred Asare and Samuel Twumasi-Ankrah from Ghana (speakers at our Brazil Gathering), Antenor and Phyllis Goncalves from Itu, Brazil (also speakers in Goiania), Jim and Carolyn Hawkins from British Columbia (who attended the Calgary Gathering), Jim Hamlett from the Pension Fund of the Christian Church, Victor
Knowles, Tim and Kathy Brunner, Paul and Debbie Pinckley (missionaries to Cambodia), Linda Egle, Sally Gary, and many others.
The plenary presentations and classes were outstanding, displaying Revelation not as a puzzle to be solved but as an unveiling of God's reign. Highlights included:
- Lance Pape and Katie Hays (both former students of mine) and Rollin Ramsaran (from Emmanuel Christian Seminary) giving enlightening insights into preaching from Revelation.
- Fate Hagood painting (with words) the awesome picture of God upon his throne.
- Dave Clayton, leader of Ethos church (one of the most creative churches in our movement, see ethoschurch.org) speaking of his genuine practice of leaving the ninety-nine to search for the one.
- Hearing Vasya Denisov tell of emerging churches in Tomsk, Russia.
But the greatest joy was witnessing how these lectures at an American Church of Christ University reflected the global nature of our movement, with Disciples, Christians, and Church of Christ speakers, male and female, from a myriad of races and nationalities.

The Women's Desk
Nearly two years ago The Women's Desk proposed,
"
Global Women Connecting has a responsibility in active conversation about the world we are living in and how God needs us to interact with it to bring about God's Kingdom. It is our goal to share with you forums for discussion, newsletters to inform and web sites full of resources to assist all of us in reconciling this issue to God's heart."
Many hours have been spent in updating the GWC website, recently adding new bloggers to the "The Listening Desk" and beginning the compilation of articles, papers and presentations for "The Resource Desk".
I have also had a few "out of office" experiences including an unexpected ear surgery (complete with life lessons that go with less-than-perfect hearing!) and lunch meetings with gifted Stone-Campbell women (Jackie Halstead, Claire Fredericks, Barbara Bekaert and Sandi Rinderer).
Social networking brought me in touch with many of you. The recent launch of www.1voice4change.com and a re-discovery of www.Gal328.org is prompting continued dialogue on the issue of gender equality and gender justice.
I've been reading, The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness by Michelle Alexander in preparation for "The Stormy Question" lecture co-sponsored by the Historical Society and my home congregation, Vine Street Christian Church.
Personal spiritual practices included Devotional Classics edited by Richard J. Foster and James Bryan Smith and a heavy dose of garden tilling, one of my favorite forms of renewal!
Quite a month!
You continue to build up the GWC network with your honest, open hearts and prayerful commitment. We are discovering more ways God is working in our lives, in our communities and in our churches. Thank you for your faithfulness and for the ministries where God is calling you.

New awards and online exhibit
Disciples History announces the establishment of two new awards. The Lester McAllister Award begins in 2014 to recognize the best book or article in Stone-Campbell history for the previous year. The Venerable Bede Award is given periodically for lifetime achievement in the study and documentation of Christian history. Inquiries to President Glenn Carson carson@discipleshistory.org "The Stormy Question: Christian Churches & The Slavery Issue" is now online - an enhancement to the interpretive display in the Oscar Haynes Exhibit Hall. The exhibit showcases their collections documenting the various positions taken by the Disciples of Christ on slavery, the Civil War, and Emancipation. Taken together, these documents, books, illustrations and artifacts tell a compelling story of a faith community struggling with the momentous issues and events of the nineteenth century. Many items will be displayed for the first time. www.discipleshistory.org/ |
