The Women's Desk
"Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you'll recover your life. I'll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me-watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won't lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you'll learn to live freely and lightly."
Matthew 11:28-30 (The Message)
God prepares. These verses have been taped to the computer screen for over a year now - words of encouragement from a dear friend. Today I read them and realize that "getting away with Christ" must move to the top of my 'to do' list. What about you? Has there been enough time for you to get away lately? Like many, multiple activities may be crowding your

Why procrastinate? The time for God's refreshment is now! Come. Share in the Spirit. Experience rest in the Father's heart. Live the joy of unity in our One Lord.

A TABLE AND A CROSS
-Gary Holloway
I've been thinking lately about a table and a cross.
What World Convention provides is a table for fellowship for the global Stone-Campbell Movement. It is a big table for a big movement. Who are we in the Stone-Campbell Movement worldwide? Are we Evangelical? Are we Ecumenical? Are we Charismatic? The answer is "Yes" to all of the above. At least some in our movement would be happy to be described as Evangelical or Ecumenical or Charismatic. Some would not want to be described by any of these labels. Each of these labels is inadequate to fully describe any of us. After all, all of us are evangelical in the best sense of that word-we all believe in the evangel, the gospel of Jesus Christ. All are ecumenical in the best sense of that word-we want the entire inhabited world, the oikoumena, to be united through the gospel of Jesus. And all are charismatic in the best sense of that word--we have received gifts, charismata, through the gospel of Jesus Christ for the purpose of building up his body the church and serving his world. The World Convention table must be big enough for evangelical, ecumenical, and charismatic members of the Stone-Campbell Movement to sit together. These labels (and any others) must not be used to exclude anyone from the table. This is keeping with our heritage of unity, where Alexander Campbell and other early leaders could use both "Protestant" and "catholic" for the movement, without using either one to exclude others. In the words of the founder of World Convention, Jesse Bader, "While preaching unity to others, our churches the world around have too often neglected to practice unity and promote a closer fellowship amongst themselves." What is more, the World Convention table must be big enough to allow hospitality to other Christians who are not in our circle of formal alliance, fellowship, and ecumenical partnerships. For example, some individuals and churches in the Stone-Campbell Movement worldwide have formal ties to churches and organizations that are "Evangelical," such as the World Evangelical Alliance. Some do not. Some individuals and churches have formal ties to churches and organizations that are "mainline" or "ecumenical," such as the World Council of Churches. Some do not. Most of our churches have ties to neither organization. What World Convention provides is a way that we can be at a big table that includes all these Christians. Even if the time is not yet right for your church to have formal ties to them, surely we want to be at the big table with them. We want to broaden our circle of Christian hospitality. What do we do at that big table? What we do at every table provided by the grace of God. We share our gifts. The Christian world needs the gifts of the Stone-Campbell Movement. Many of the teachings most precious to us-believer's baptism, weekly communion open to all believers, the importance of local congregational life, and other teachings-have become more precious to others through our sharing of gifts. We also can be enriched by receiving the gifts that other Christians and churches have for us. What does it take to be at the big table? It takes a willingness to think of others first. It takes a cross. Perhaps our primary concern is "How will being at the table benefit me or my church?" But that cannot be our primary concern if we follow Jesus. Instead we must ask, "How will being at this table, even if it costs us, benefit others?" We must follow the life of the one who willingly gave his gifts, his time, his money, his food, and his blood for others. That is what it takes to be at the table of our Lord.
