The Women's Desk
Some of my most cherished experiences in life have been the result of knowing mothers and fathers. Although my own children are now adults and our relationships are more mature, I have discovered that I will always know a part of them as my child - a part of me will always be their parent.
It is reassuring to me to recognize God as my eternal parent. No matter how 'grown-up' I believe I am, God is preparing for my next developmental stages.
I find next stages are filled with strangeness. Foreign concepts, peculiar notions, odd behaviors, unnamed fears. When life confronts with challenges, the child inside me responds awkwardly before recognizing comfort in the Father's wisdom.
For instance -
A message from an acquaintance is filled with misinformation. Do I become irritated or intrigued?
A talkative old friend retells a mutual experience - again. Do I listen for the nuances in this version or prepare my rebuttal?
A lecture insists on civil re-evaluation. Do I attempt to quiet my personal bias or initiate thoughtful discussion with my colleagues?
Dwindling attendance causes budget changes. Do I react with panicked alarm or welcome the indication that change is in progress?
Every day we are given moments to respond. God's hospitality flings open doors to resources that help us detect what to understand, where to heal, when to protect, how to love. Even the clumsiest response we offer reflects God's grace and can heal wounds of separation to unite us to each other.
God's heart-opening hospitality welcomes, comforts, protects. Sharing openly dilutes our differences and becomes the fuel that inspires.
Inspiration creates.
We grow.
God reigns.
Halleluiah!

"The Stormy Question": Christian Churches and the Slavery Issue, will document the various positions taken by the Disciples of Christ on slavery, the Civil War, and Emancipation. In recognition of it's 150th anniversary, Historical Society's Vice-President & Chief Archivist, Sara Harwell and Associate Archivist, Elaine Philpott have coordinated the exhibit in the Oscar Haynes Exhibit Hall with a public viewing of an original of the Emancipation Proclamation at the Tennessee State Museum, February 12-18, 2013. An expanded version of the exhibit will be available on discipleshistory.org in the spring of 2013.

Employer Matching Donations
Increase your contribution value
Some employers will match their employees' charitable gifts made toward a non-profit organization under the provision that an original donor (their employee) first makes a gift toward that organization. Please consider asking your employer if they participate in matching gifts. World Convention will assist with any necessary procedures.

WELCOMING THE STRANGER
-Gary Holloway
From January 29-February 1, I was blessed (along with World Convention board members Robert Welsh and Doug Foster) to attend the meeting of Christian Churches Together in the USA christianchurchestogether.org held in Austin, Texas. This is an annual gathering of Catholic, Evangelical, Orthodox, and Protestant Christian leaders. The theme of the meeting was Christians and immigration.
Highlights included:
- A stirring reminder from Wes Granberg-Michaelson that God the Trinity is a welcoming God.
- Jenny Hwang teaching us from the Bible that Abraham, Joseph, Jesus and Paul were immigrants.
- An eloquent presentation from Daniel Flores on the complexity of immigration issues and the personal struggles of immigrant families.
- Sharing our faith stories and praying for one another in small groups.
- Personal testimony from immigrants and refugees from Guatemala, Mexico, Palestine, Nigeria, Eretria, Ethiopia, and Vietnam.
- Fellowship and sharing of our lives and callings in Christ around the table.
World Convention is global, and thus much larger than the United States, but my prayer is that our churches are part of these kinds of meetings in every state, province, and country. There we can sit at the table with other Christians to share the gifts God has given us. There we can face together the challenges of our cultures. There (in the words of many speakers in Austin) we can proclaim and live out the gospel of Jesus.
