Dennis Helsabeck, Sr.
Friday, January 11, 2013
We sadly report the death of Dennis Helsabeck, Sr. Dennis taught at Milligan College from 1963 until his retirement in 1978. He was Emmanuel Christian Seminary's first Counseling professor when the seminary began operations in the fall of 1965. At 100 years old, Dennis was a walking encyclopedia of significant people in the Stone-Campbell Movement during the past century. More importantly, though, he was a beloved father, grandfather, sibling, professor, friend, and fellow Christian. His presence will be sorely missed. |

SPIRITUAL ECUMENISM
-Gary Holloway
"Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace" (Ephesians 4:3).
Many times I have been asked, "So, what is your plan to unite all Christians?" I must confess that I have no easy "five-step" plan to make that happen.
But I do have a first step. It's the same step Jesus took. On the night he was betrayed, facing death on a cross, Jesus prayed for unity. "My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me" (John 17:20-21).
Do you pray for Christian unity?
Is it part of your daily prayer life? For 2013, I am resolved to be more dedicated to daily prayer for the unity of all who believe. I ask you to join me in that resolution. That will mean specific prayers for unity. It also means that we look at the prayers we already pray as unity prayers.
For example, the prayer Jesus taught his disciples to pray begins with "Our Father." By claiming that the Father is not mine alone but a Father common to us all, we pray a unity prayer. And in those words we join with believers in all countries in a myriad of languages in proclaiming that we share a common Father and a common faith. We are one.
Does your church pray for Christian unity?
I have heard few public prayers for Christian unity. Should this not be part of our joint prayers whenever Christians gather? If you plan worship or know those that do, let us commit to prayer together in our churches for unity.
Do you pray for unity with other churches?
There is a power in praying together for Christian unity with those in other churches. This requires effort, planning, and hospitality on our part. Each year in January (18-25 this year), Christians all over the world in a variety of churches gather together for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. Perhaps you can find that prayer service in your community and join in. But we should have other times in the year when we pray for unity with believers from other churches.
Do you pray that the world might know the love of God?
Why pray for Christian unity? Because, like Jesus, we believe God hears and answers. Because, like Jesus, we want the world to know God's love. "I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one- I in them and you in me-so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me" (John 17:21-22).
This is what we mean by "spiritual ecumenism." Spiritual does not imply that our unity is not real and visible. On the contrary, it confesses that real visible unity only comes as a gift of God in prayer, through the intercession of the Son, by the power of the Spirit.
And when we pray for unity, God might just answer that prayer through us.
