Anthroposophy Ever New

MM - by Mark McAlister

It's been said that Alcoholics Anonymous makes it a principle to venerate newcomers. Their questions are sharp and immediate, and they prevent the organization from becoming complacent and irrelevant. Is there a lesson here for the Anthroposophical Society? What would happen if we paid more attention to the questions and concerns of newcomers?

With this in mind, I decided to participate in the Cambridge Music Conference in Vancouver last November. Elizabeth Carmack (an anthroposophist) was the driving force behind the conference, but the vast majority of the presenters and participants had no direct connection with Anthroposophy. What brought them together was a deep concern for the plight and trauma of people in the justice system (including both perpetrators and survivors of violent crime), and a quest for real and sustainable healing. Nigel Osbourne (a composer from UK) was a particularly inspiring example. Working with children in war zones, he has shown how the elements of music can reach to the deepest levels of the human being and bring hope where otherwise there would only be despair. I did not feel that he was lacking anthroposophy; he was revealing it to me...Read full article

RESEARCH CORNER
Classroom Alive

"Walk with us!  Take your studies on the road!"

Introduction to Mischa Saunders' individual research project: " Societal Narratives":

Mischa Saunders (r) and colleagues
For my individual research l will be focusing on societal narratives as they pertain to the realms of economy, politics, and culture, and the interactions between these realms. These studies will be carried out as a member of the hosting team of Classroom Alive. I will focus on two specific narratives, Anthroposophy and Materialism, and compare these with others that I encounter from people and places along the way.  To understand how the differing perspectives of these narratives manifest in the three realms (economy, politics, and culture) I will focus on what each narrative has to say about food systems, finding common ground, and the role of the individual in society.

Accountability Reports From The Goetheanum Leadership

The current issue of Anthroposophy Worldwide contains and accountability report from members of the Executive Council.  Here are the highlights:

Virginia Sease:  On 22 March Virginia Sease spoke at the Annual General Meeting about changes in the tasks of the Executive Council at the Goetheanum. She also honoured the work of Sergei Prokofieff who, while unable to attend the Annual General Meeting in person, declared his withdrawal for health reasons at the meeting.

Bodo von Plato: Differentiating by starting from the whole
While the fruits of anthroposophy are popular, anthroposophy and the Anthroposophical Society are struggling. Bodo von Plato thinks that instead of continuing to rely on the ability to bring opposites together we should start from the whole and trust that a meaningful differentiation will ensue.

Paul Mackay: The Anthroposophical Society as a new culture
With the institution of a new organ - the Goetheanum Leadership Group - new questions arise as to the task of the Anthroposophical Society at the Goetheanum. For Paul Mackay its task is to generate a culture of free human beings. Such a culture needs freedom, trust, human encounters, the ability to serve and the will for peaceful coexistence.

Seija Zimmermann: Drawing on a wealth of experience
Seija Zimmermann explained the steps that led to the institution of the new Goetheanum Leadership Group. Since Anthroposophy Worldwide has continually reported about this process, this item offers information about the initial situation, the Group's way of working
and its goals.

Justus Wittich: Hope, work and trust
Since the financial report was printed in Anthroposophy Worldwide 3/2013 (as part of the Annual Report 2012/2013) we will focus here on more general considerations relating to issues such as the resignation of members, membership fees or the freedom of legacies.
