Domaine Huet

The story of Domaine Huet began in 1928 when Victor Huet, a bistro owner, moved from Paris to the small town of Vouvray in the Loire countryside to alleviate the health problems he developed during the Great War.  The Huets purchased a small house and an accompanying three hectares of vines which would become "Le Haut Lieu" vineyard.

Today Domaine Huet is regarded as the greatest producer in Vouvray and the undisputed masters of Chenin Blanc.  It is an amazingly complex varietal that can produce world class wines at every sugar level and even as partially and fully-sparkling wines.  In great years the wines can age for decades - even more than a century.  They are legendary.

The Domaine's three vineyards - Le Haut Lieu, Le Mont and Clos du Bourg are farmed biodynamically and depending on what mother nature provides, the wines are made in a range of styles.  Sec means dry - like a normal table wine.  Demi-Sec means half-dry, or "a little sweet".  Moelleux can be taken as "soft", often these grapes are botrytized and it is a little sweeter still but balanced by naturally high acidity.

Two wines offered below indicate "Premiere trie" which means "first pass through the vineyard" an indicator of it being the highest quality harvest, but in reality this term indicates the best Moelleux wine that they can make.

Cuvée Constance is simply one of the world's great wines -  a botrytis affected wine, like Sauternes, which is only released in great years and one which will outlive us all.

In 2005 Decanter magazine published their "100 Greatest Wines". The 1947 Huet Vouvray "Le Haut Lieu" Moulleux was ranked #6 - the second-highest ranking for any white wine behind only the 1921 vintage of Chateau d'Yquem.  In December of last year Stephan Reinhardt of Robert Parker's Wine Advocate named this same wine his "Greatest Wine Drinking Experience of 2015".

Cases are limited, please get in your requests as soon as possible.  This offer will close in 2 weeks.  The wines will be arriving in 12-14 weeks or so.

Domaine Huet Vouvray
"Le Haut Lieu" Sec 2014
$43.95 per bottle, cases of 12

"Le Haut Lieu" covers 9 hectares, with very deep clayey limestone soil, predominantly brown clay, along with calcareous and silica based soils. This rather heavy soil generally produces supple wines.  This is in stock now.

"A golden yellow color dresses the 2014 Vouvray Le Haut-Lieu Sec, which is still a baby on the nose, showing concentrated, almost tropical fruit flavours (pineapples, lemons) on the clear and fresh nose. Round and fruity on the palate, this medium to full-bodied, very elegant and persistent wine shows ripe and concentrated fruit, a delicately yeasty texture with a very fine grip, and is followed by a long, intense finish packed with minerals and stimulating dashes of lemon juice and limestone minerals. There is an excellent purity of fruit and a structure giving minerality here. Since we know how well also dry Huets can age, I would not touch it before 2020/21, although I am pretty sure the wine will be even better in 15 or 20+ years."

Domaine Huet Vouvray
"Clos du Bourg" Demi-Sec 2014
$67.95 per bottle, cases of 6

This 6-hectare "Clos", surrounded by stone walls, is located on the first slopes above the church in Vouvray.  The rather thin soil, only about one metre in depth, lies in direct contact with the non-active limestone. Le Clos du Bourg produces a powerful and well-structured wine.

"Intensely yellow in colour, the 2014 Vouvray Clos du Bourg Demi-Sec offers a very clear, intense and aromatic bouquet of ripe yellow fruits along with crushed stone flavours. The Demi-Sec version is even more open than the Sec, and the attack on the palate is lovely, round and fruit-intense, but also very mineral and firmly structured in the finish. This is a very elegant and mouth-filling Chenin with great finesse and a lingering salinity. It has good and grippy length. This wine is dangerously accessible already, though with an aging potential of 20-30, probably more years. The 20 grams per litre of residual sugar tastes quite sweet at the moment."

Domaine Huet Vouvray
"Le Mont" Demi-Sec 2005
$67.95 per bottle, cases of 6

The soil in Le Mont is pebbly and consists mainly of green-coloured clay and silica. The wines produced in this vineyard are traditionally elegant and poised.

"Plump and juicy, with stone fruit, brown spice, humus, powdered ginger and acacia notes that run through the bright, well-defined finish, where the acidity kicks in. Drink now through 2018. 980 cases made."

"Lovely cheese and herb savouriness to the nose, which is mineralic and a bit citrusy. The palate has a creamy edge to the savoury, nutty, herby fruit. Lovely wine."

Domaine Huet Vouvray
"Clos du Bourg" Moelleux 2007
$59.95 per bottle, cases of 6

"Golden yellow. Rich, smoky aromas of yellow plum, quince, apple blossom and sweet herbs. Sumptuous nectarine texture with a bright, salty minerality. At once generous and juicy, showing an herbal crispness on the long finish. "

"From a classic vintage with high levels of malic acid, the 2007 Vouvray Clos du Bourg Moelleux does not show any primary fruit aromas that the 2008s still deliver, but is also far away from being matured. This in-between wine needs a little bit of time in the glass to reveal its minerally flavoured dried fruit and lemon aromas. Rather subtle and pure than rich and intense is also the motto on the palate, which is elegant, well balanced, and slightly sweet and mineral in the finish. This wine remains discreet and does not explode or flow generously over the palate, but reveals a nice finesse and elegance. The finish shows a good grip and purity, and again is slightly drying and by far not as round as in 2009 or 2008. This wine will hardly improve over the years but certainly change. "

Domaine Huet Vouvray
"Le Haut Lieu" Moelleux 2008
$59.95 per bottle, cases of 6

"Very clear and precise in its concentrated and very elegant fruit aromas of pineapples, peaches and skinned tangerines, the 2008 Vouvray Le Haut-Lieu Moelleux reveals a great elegance and sappy fruit concentration on the palate migrating to a very dense and aromatic finish. Beautifully balanced and stunningly accessible today, there is no need to wait but - please have a look on the other wines of this tasting - dozens of good reasons to do so, nonetheless. The aromatic aftertaste reveals a lovely salinity and stimulating grip, and the gorgeous sweetness is very well integrated. Very accessible already and of great finesse. 2008 was a small, low-yielding vintage with tiny, thick-skinned berries that were difficult to press without the result of over-extraction. High malic acidity levels were reported from this vintage, though in this case the acidity is absolutely lovely and lifting."

Domaine Huet Vouvray
"Clos du Bourg"
Moelleux Premiere trie 2005
$115.95 per bottle, cases of 6

"Offers a panoply of rich fig, quince, persimmon, date and orange peel flavours, but stays bright and lithe, with a lacy texture and bright acidity. Very alluring, with great buried minerality offset by papaya on the very long, finely beaded finish. Drink now through 2028. 735 cases made."
96 points, Wine Spectator, June 2008

"The golden coloured 2005 Vouvray Clos du Bourg Moelleux Première Trie offers an intense and concentrated, honey-sweet and chamomille-flavoured bouquet, with some chalk and caramel flavours, whereas the fruit aromas are beautifully integrated. Sweet, smooth, mineral and very elegant on the palate, this is a great, full-bodied, dense and perfectly balanced Moelleux of great finesse and provided with tension, an already accessible maturity and a lingering and stimulating salinity in the very good finish. Very sensual and absolutely beautiful to drink on its own. The wine was bottled in April 2004 with 12. 5% alcohol, 81 grams per litre of residual sugar and a gentle acidity of 4.5 grams per litre (pH 3.42). Drink over the next 30-40 years."

Domaine Huet Vouvray
"Le Haut Lieu"
Moelleux Premiere trie 2003
$108.95 per bottle, cases of 6

"From another early, low-acid vintage, the golden shining, botrytis-free 2003 Vouvray Le Haut-Lieu Moelleux Première Trie shows a beautifully intense, extraordinary clear, refined and elegant bouquet of ripe fruits intertwined with mineral flavours -- fascinating! Sweet, intense and delicate on the palate, this highly elegant and lovely concentrated Chenin is of great purity, balance and finesse. Its length is impressive, its generous flow is extremely sensual and its overall intensity and accessible generosity are absolutely gorgeous. This 2003 is great today, but will probably even more fascinating in 50+ years. The balance and drinkability is superb. Highly recommended."

Domaine Huet Vouvray
"Cuvee Constance" 2003
$229.95 per bottle
500ml bottles, cases of 6

"The colour of the 2003 Vouvray Moelleux Cuvée Constance (poured from the 500 ml bottle) is as golden-orange as is the small paper strip label. On the nose this wine is an unreal beauty, combining perfect fruit ripeness and concentration with precision, finesse and spicy/mineral flavours that are quite rare in sweet wines of this top level. Smooth, nobly elegant, perfectly balanced and highly intense on the palate, this is a wine to die for. Its finesse and weightless intensity is beyond worth. Surely the finest Huet I ever tasted."
100 points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, Nov 2015

"Offers a stunning array of date, quince paste, fig and persimmon aromas and flavours, with a laser of acidity carrying it all through an extremely lengthy finish. Just when you think it's all opulence, riveting acidity and a green tea hint flash on the finish, leaving a wonderfully elegant impression. Drink now through 2030. 330 cases made. "
