Wines to Beat the Winter Blues

January 2016

There is something special about winter evenings.  The kids are in bed and the house is quiet.  Is there a better time to enjoy a glass of wine?

I've never subscribed to the "winter is for reds wines, summer for whites" way of thinking, so we have a nice cross-section of wines from our catalogue.  Some are for "anytime" enjoyment, some for more special occasions. I'm happy to chat anytime about all of our products, we have more than 300 wines on hand at all times.  Feel free to call, 647 955 8872.

Please visit us on the web for new wines, new releases, new catalogues and all the critics' reviews.

All my best,
Chris.

Zardetto Spumanti
Prosecco DOC Brut Non-Vintage
$17.95 per bottle, cases of 12

Prosecco should not be considered "cheap Champagne".  Besides the bubbles these wines have little in common.

Prosecco is made in north-eastern Italy, not far from Verona and Venice.  The grape is Glera, the process takes place in specialized tanks and the wine is light, clean and fragrant.  Champagne is grown east of Paris, the grapes are Burgundian and the process takes 3-4 years at minimum.  The wines tend to be richer than Prosecco, they sometimes age nicely and are far more complex and expensive.

Champagne is for special, elevated occasions whereas Prosecco is the perfect wine for brunch, seafood, cheese plates, or Netflix.

Zardetto has been making some of the best Proseccos for over 40 years and was among the first to begin to distribute the wines internationally.  The state-of-the-art facility is situated in Congeliano, in the eastern hills of the Prosecco appellation.  It is here that the steep, undulating hillsides are draped in the lush green canopies of the Glera grape.  The soils impart a particular minerality to the finished wines.  They are delicate wines, with a strong bead (bubbles) and a floral, not fruity, personality.

"Lemon and candied-apple aromas and flavours. Full-bodied, bubbly and flavourful. Round and delicious. Fruit-forward style. Drink now."

Mertes Riesling
Johann Peter Mertes
"Goldberg" Riesling QbA 2014
$21.95 per bottle, cases of 12

Much like the Mosel River Valley, which receives the lion's share of German wine publicity, the Saar River Valley vineyards characteristically are very steep (55 degrees in places), and composed of Blue Devon slate.  The wines from Saar are particularly layered with exeptional acidity, low alcohol and a long finish.

Twenty-five years ago, the 'Wawerner Goldberg' or 'Golden Mountain' was almost unknown outside of the Saar. Over the years, it has proven itself to produce grapes of quality equal to that of the most famous vineyards of the Mosel. By midday, the sun shines almost vertically on the Goldberg, providing perfect ripening conditions.

This is wine provides amazing value - consumed nice and cold the minerality is palpable, the acidity and sugars in perfect balance.  Cold smoked salmon anyone?

Hirsch Grüner Veltliner
"Hirschvergnügen" 2013
$22.95 per bottle, cases of 12

If you haven't tried good Grüner Veltliner yet, you really must.  This is a sommeliers' and (like me) wine nerd's favourite white.  The most versatile wine you'll find.  If you must have only one type of white wine at home - make it Grüner.

Consider this combination of wine descriptions for Grüner - full bodied, yet low in alcohol, usually 10-12%.  Dry!  High acidity.  Aromas and flavours of beautiful flowers, fresh herbs, white beans!, lettuces, ground white pepper, yellow bell peppers and earth.  Contradictories that combine to present one complete and deliciously refreshing wine.

Weingut Hirsch is one of Kamptal's most exciting and anti-establishment wineries, making outrageous wines from biodynamically farmed fruit.

"Citrus oil richness; exotic inner-mouth perfume of bittersweet flowers and resinous green herbs; and tropical lushness of papaya and pink grapefruit aren't what I would have expected from an entry-level and alcoholically light Grüner Veltliner. But I'm not complaining! Buried in there somewhere are more Veltliner-typical hints of lentil and white pepper. This finishes with a rush of refreshing juiciness supporting a welter of flavour. (Although the labelling has changed, this basic Hirsch bottling, formerly designated with a nickname and number, retains the same cellar approach and sources: almost entirely from the estate, plus bio-dynamically farmed fruit from one northerly neighbour.)  2015-2018"

Jurosa Bottle

Lis Neris "Jurosa" Chardonnay 2012
$42.95 per bottle, cases of 12

A single vineyard selection of 25 year-old Chardonnay vines from the "Jurosa-Gris" vineyard, which is barrel fermented (500 litre tonneaus) and then allowed to rest on the lees (yeats cells) for 11 months in the same barrel with judicious stirring.

The end result is a very rich, very long, harmonious wine.  Because the wine is fermented in barrel, the oak notes are not as obvious on the nose or palate as they would be had this wine been fermented in steel tanks and then put into barrels to age.

This is one of my favourite Chardonnays, and I think an amazing value in what should be considered a region where some of the world's best whites are made, Fruili in north-eastern Italy.

I believe the review below really underestimates this wine that I have drank twice, both times offering my own opinion of 92 points.  I think the price makes this a very compelling deal.

"A big, powerful wine, the 2012 Chardonnay Jurosa offers plenty of varietal character and textural richness.  2015 - 2019"

Domaine Christian Moreau Pere et Fils.
Chablis Grand Cru "Vaudesir" 2013
$73.95 per bottle, cases of 6
(3 cases remain)

"The 2013 Chablis Grand Cru Vaudésir comes from 0.5 hectare and for the first time ever it is aged entirely in used barrel for 10 months before being transferred into tank for another eight months. I severely underscored this last year. It offers superb definition on the nose: citrus lemon, cold-granite scents, reserved but beautifully focused. The palate is clean and precise, hints of lime and orange zest on the entry, a slight chalkiness to the texture and segues into a lively saline finish that lingers long in the mouth. Wow - what a lovely Vaudésir this has blossomed into!"
92 points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, Aug 2015

"Mint, chamomile, honey, hazelnuts and dried fruits jump from the glass in the 2013 Chablis Vaudésir. Underlying veins of acidity give the Vaudésir its energy, tension and pure drive. This is one of the more reticent wines at Moreau this year, but it also offers plenty of promise. In 2013, the Vaudésir was fermented entirely in tank. 2015+"

Domaine Christian Moreau Pere et Fils was named an "International Winery of the Year" for 2015 by Wine & Spirits magazine.

Chateau Montelena
Napa Valley Chardonnay 2013
$78.95 per bottle, cases of 6

Thirty-nine years ago, this wine bested the greatest Chardonnays from the US and France in the original "Paris Tasting", and little has changed since.  Still one of Napa's "blue-chip" Chardonnays - always reliable, always age-worthy, always delicious.  Barrel fermented, non-malolactic, little manipulation.  The essence of Napa's cool southern vineyards.

"You know you're doing something right when, after 45 years of Chardonnay winemaking, they name a California Chardonnay style after your winery, the "Montelena style." In short, it means a non-malolactic, minimally oaked Chardonnay. This estate has long made one of the best examples of a quiet, restrained Chardonnay that ages for 20 or more years"

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, Oct 2014

Pio Cesare Barbera d'Alba 2013
$28.95 per bottle, cases of 12

The Barbera grapes grown in the Barolo area of Piedmont give full structure, plummy, spicey and complex flavours.  You'll find blackberries in the aroma and a hint of toasted tobacco.  Perhaps surprisingly, this ages quite well.  Proof that not all delicious red wines have to break the bank.

"The 2013 Barbera d'Alba is bright, floral and punchy, with plenty of bold red fruit. Flowers, white pepper and mint add an attractive upper register of freshness and vivacity. Drink this refined, polished Barbera over the next few years. The 2013 was done mostly in cask, with a brief passage of 6 months in French oak barrels. 2015 - 2020."

Lafond_PN

Lafond Winery
SRH (Santa Rita Hills) Pinot Noir 2013
$39.95 per bottle, cases of 12

The Santa Rita Hills are a sub-region (sub-appellation in wine-speak) of a sub-appellation.  Within Santa Barbara County one finds the Santa Ynez Valley and within that are the Santa Rita Hills, a viticultural area of only 48 square miles.

Twenty million years ago marine sediment was pushed up into the sky forming a mountain range like we find on the west coast today.  Over the next 12 million years tectonic action actually turned the mountains to run east-west.  It is the most clearly lateral valley between Alaska and South America.  This east-west direction pulls marine air and fog from the Pacific into the valley, cooling the region.  This and the poor, calcium rich soils makes for one of the world's best cool-climate viticulture areas for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

The fruit is harvested - only at night - from the Lafond Vineyard and the Burning Creek Vineyard.  The crop produced 16 different fermentations which after blending were aged in mostly older barriques and puncheons. Only 2,835 cases were made.  This is complex, exciting, artisan Pinot Noir at its best.

"Raspberry, dark slate, gravel and a bit of shiitake mushroom entertain the nose on this bottling by the higher-end sister brand of Santa Barbara Winery. Both richly juicy and brightly acidic on the palate, it offers flavours of boysenberry and sagebrush, making for a very lively wine."

Duckhorn "Migration"
Russian River Valley Pinot Noir 2013
$45.95 per bottle, cases of 12

Originally the "second" wine from Goldeneye (Duckhorn Wine Company), Migration is now a brand not tied to any one vineyard fruit source, but rather, "spreads it wings" and explores all California's diverse Chardonnay and Pinot Noir growing appellations.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate hasn't reviewed the 2013 yet, but for the 2012 he wrote, "a big, complex, Vosne-Romanée / Chambolle-Musigny nose of forest floor, bouquet garni, blue, red and black fruits, and a broad, savoury, rich mouthfeel with no heaviness. Full-bodied yet gorgeously pure and complex, this is about as good as Pinot Noir can be. Bravo! 93 points."

"Earthy in a way that's almost savage, this wine's bouquet discloses layers of cooked mushroom and forest floor, the texture velvety smooth. The grapes hail from the Green Valley appellation within the larger Russian River Valley, with minerality that's crisp and buoyant. The finish shows some of the oak."

Buehler_Cabernet

Buehler Vineyards
Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2013
$49.95 per bottle, cases of 12

Robert Parker wrote of the 2013 Napa Valley vintage that it "may turn out to be the finest vintage I have experienced in tasting North Coast varietals over the last 37 years. It's a game-changer in terms of the consistency of quality, the depth of quality, and the across-the-board excellence for so many wines."

Buehler Vineyards is located in Conn Valley, which is east of St. Helena and south of Howell Mountain.  They have been turning out some of Napa's best value wines for 35 years, in particular Cabernet Sauvignon.  Winemakers have included Heidi Peterson Barrett (who went on to Dalla Valle and Screaming Eagle) and later David Cronin (previously of Far Niente).  This is a great value wine which is drinking already and will for 10 years or more.

"Buehler's 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is dark, juicy and bold, with plenty of dark red cherry, plum, mocha, spice and leather. Drink this attractive, mid-weight Cabernet over the next few years. 2017-2025"
90 points, Antonio Galloni  vinous.com, Oct 2015

"One of the great values in Napa Cabernet Sauvignon year-in, year-out is Buehler Vineyards. The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is dense ruby/purple with loads of cassis and spice box. The wine is beautifully pure, luscious, round, juicy and sexy. Drink it over the next 5-7 years, although I suspect it will keep longer. Wines like this are few and far between - sadly - in Napa Valley."

Frog's Leap "Estate Grown"
Rutherford
Cabernet Sauvignon 2013
$79.95 per bottle, cases of 12

For decades, it has been the goal of Frog's Leap to produce a Rutherford estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon. Inspired by the early Cabernets of Inglenook and Beaulieu Vineyard, they have spent the past 20 years finding, farming and obtaining highly sought after land in Rutherford-with particular attention to the Rutherford Bench.

It all began with the acquisition of the Red Barn Vineyard in 1994 on Conn Creek Road. The next piece of the puzzle was contracting longtime vineyardist Frank Leeds' family owned Chavez-Leeds vineyard on the iconic Rutherford Bench.  This gave the first proof of how complex and connected dry-farmed, organically-grown Cabernet Sauvignon could be.

Finally, in 2007, they purchased the historic Rossi Vineyard located in the very heart of the Rutherford Bench. This 50 acre dry-farmed vineyard was purchased by the Rossi family in 1906 (!) and is located only a stone's throw away from the two vineyards that were the original inspiration - Inglenook and Beaulieu.  This vineyard is an agricultural treasure and produces some of the best Cabernet in Rutherford.

Don't let the name and motto fool you, "Time's fun when you're having flies!", this is serious Cabernet from an epic vintage and dollar-for-dollar represents probably the best value Cabernet I have.  Drink anytime and cellar for 15-20 years.

"A super attractive, mid-weight wine, the estate's 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon offers up a classic expression of Rutherford. Sweet red cherry, iron, smoke and chocolate are all pushed forward, followed by a kick of energy that punctuates the finish. Exuberant and racy, with fabulous intensity, the 2013 is showing beautifully today. Despite its openness today, the 2013 has the pedigree to drink well for many years. 2018-2032"

Continuum

Continuum 2012 (Pritchard Hill)
$319.95 per bottle, cases of 6

Continuum's 63 acre vineyard sits adjacent to Ovid's high on Pritchard Hill, more than 1,300 feet above sea level.  The soil here is rocky, dusty, volcanic in origin and iron-rich.  The top soil is meager, it retains water poorly and thus the crops are small (less than 2 tons/acre) and grapes are tiny.  This makes for very powerful Cabernet.

Sumptuous yet brilliantly balanced the 2012 Continuum is flush with black cherry and mulberry fruit with complex flavours of graphite and espresso.  Full bodied and opulent, 2012 is polished, supple and harmonious; delicious today or cellar it to enjoy its evolution for decades to come.  The blend is 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Cabernet Franc, 6% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot

"The success of Continuum, a wine from Pritchard Hill made by Tim Mondavi and his sister Marcia, continues unabated. This is a beautiful vintage for Continuum, with a dense bluish/purple colour and a beautiful nose of blueberries, violets, a touch of licorice, truffle and background oak. This full-bodied wine displays beautifully sweet and well-integrated tannin as well as loads of forest floor and spice box. A complex, Bordeaux-styled wine, it is approachable and dramatic, even ostentatious, as many 2012s tend to be, so there's no harm in drinking it now or cellaring it for another 20+ years."
96 points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, Dec 2015

"Ripe, silky tannins wrap around the palate in the 2012 Continuum. Bright red cherry, plum, spice, menthol and hard candy meld together effortlessly in the glass. The 2012 captures the polished, refined side of the vintage. This is perhaps the most refined wine I have ever tasted from Continuum. The flavours are bright and focused, while the new oak has been decidedly toned down, both of which allow the personality of these breathtaking hillsides sites to shine. The 2012 is the first Continuum to be made entirely with estate grown fruit."
96 points, Antonio Galloni  vinous.com, Dec 2014

"There's clarity and vivacity to this wine with dark fruits, dark chocolate and a mineral undertone. Full body, firm tannins and a long, flavourful finish. Powerful and long yet balanced and bright. Drink or hold."
