Tiefenbrunner logo

Tiefenbrunner
Pinot Grigio 2014 Alto Adige
$20.45 per bottle, cases of 12

Possibly the most widely enjoyed white from Italy, Pinot Grigio is floral, crisp, and refreshing.
Tiefenbrunner's is a reference point for Pinot Grigio, and for that reason it is our #1 most popular wine.

Grapes grown in the Italian Alps benefit from the well drained soils, extended sunlight hours, and hot days followed by downright cold nights.  These extremes produce grapes with vibrancy and character.

This wine is medium-rich, dry and fruity in an apple and pear sort of way and has a nice baking-spiciness in its finish.  It's a great wine for entertaining a crowd with diverse palate preferences.

"Lightly floral and crisp, this racy white offers a minerally base note and a lively profile of lemon zest, peach skin and pickled ginger. Drink now through 2018. 3,000 cases imported."

La Giustiniana Gavi di Gavi "Lugarara" 2014
$25.95 per bottle, cases of 12

When Enrico Tomalino took over winemaking duties at this beautiful estate in 1978, he recognized that even though the property had produced grapes since 900 AD, there were three distinct soil types and he designated them three different "Cru" or vineyards.

The calcareous soil of the Lugarara Cru, which is formerly an ancient seabed, renders an elegant expression of the Cortese grape - the refined scent of anise, an herbal steely flavour, and pronounced acidity make this dry white an ideal accompaniment for anything from the sea, especially grilled calamari, ceviche or sashimi.

Is it coincidental that wines grown on an ancient seabed, which is now in the Italian Alps goes great with seafood?

"Fresh with citrus blossom aromas, delicate and pretty. Rich and ripe, but with lots of juicy acidity. Light on its feet, with plenty of mineral and citrus notes. Crisp, with good length. 2015-2022."

Vau de Vey

Chateau de Maligny "Vau de Vey" Chablis 2014
750ml, $41.95 per bottle, cases of 12
375ml, $23.75 per bottle, cases of 12

Few wines excite the palate like good Chablis. I drink it all the time.  Rarely does a dinner party occur without at least one bottle of Chablis to get our stomach growling and our palates salivating.

The Kimmeridgian clay soils that define the region produce concentrated, somewhat austere wine that pulls your attention in with each sip.  It is simply amazing the depth of flavour Chardonnay can have when at the same time it is reticent, making you focus on your palate - unwinding the complexity.

Vau de Vey is a Premier Cru, south facing vineyard that slopes down for 200 meters and can reach a gradient of 45 or 50 degrees (!!) and so horses and machinery cannot be used. The soil is very poor, reducing vigour and forcing the vines to produce intense, concentrated grapes.  Château de Maligny is largest owner of Vau de Vey with about 16 hectares in production.

CannonballChardonnay

Cannonball Wine Company
Sonoma County Chardonnay 2013
$22.95 per bottle, cases of 12

Sonoma County is my favourite source for Chardonnay in California.  There's something to that laid-back, pretty, peaches 'n' cream style of Chardonnay with vibrant acidity and mellow oak flavours.  Cannonball's drinks way above it's price point, as do all their varietals.

You'll find heady notes of orchard apple, lemon curd, nectarine and wild honeysuckle made complex by hints of almond. It is striking yet expansive, it develops over the palate with sophisticated creaminess and racy acidity. Flavours of white peach, brioche and quince compote unfold, as well as hints of vanilla and a rich earthy floral richness, like saffron.

Fontodi Ch Cl

Fontodi Chianti Classico 2011
$34.95 per bottle, cases of 12

Fontodi's Chianti Classico is the wine that has always represented the company's philosophy of quality and expresses the estates terroir perfectly. Produced with Sangiovese grapes from various vineyards within their property, it matures for a year in Allier casks with a further 3 months in bottle, giving it roundness and fullness.

Fontodi's reputation as an outstanding Chianti producer is amply displayed with the 2011. Ultra modern equipment, up-to-the-minute winemaking techniques, and a drive for perfection have resulted in a wine true to Fontodi's superior style.

"Aromas of dried tangerines and plums with hints of flowers. Full body with ultra-fine tannins and a delicious balsamic, dark-fruit and plum character. Savoury and delicious. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold."

Cannonball Wine Company
California Cabernet Sauvignon 2012
$23.95 per bottle, cases of 12

One of my favourite Cabs and a wine that I have time and again mistaken for a much more expensive wine (I don't want to say which), is Cannonball Cabernet.  You may have seen this on wine lists all over Ontario, now you can have a case at home for yourself!

"Despite the explosive nature of the name, this is no fruit bomb - it's structured with depth and balance. Aromas of toasty oak and espresso roast mingle with dark berry fruit. There's a complex array of dark juicy fruit on the palate with cherry and plum to the fore interlaced with dark bittersweet chocolate and savoury bits. There's good weight and texture and a lingering, tangy aftertaste."

4/5 stars, winecurrent.com, Sept 2015

Amavi Walla Walla Valley
Cabernet Sauvignon 2012
$48.95 per bottle, cases of 12

Winemaker Jean-Francois Pellet, who was named Seattle magazine's Winemaker of the Year for 2015,  says it, "smells like dark fruit, blueberry cobbler, dusty cedar; tastes like currant, asian spice, black liquorice; the mouthfeel is perfectly balanced, full-bodied with bright acidity, lengthy finish; and one should drink it with steak, cassoulet, or grilled portobello mushrooms."  I would have to agree.

"Scents of mocha and black cherry provide a generous introduction to this stylish red. With some air, the oak is more prominent, combining with the fruit and the firm, supple tannins to lend a savoury impression"

Duckhorn Cabernet

Duckhorn
Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2012
$79.95 per bottle, cases of 6

At Duckhorn Vineyards they have been producing Cabernet Sauvignon since 1978. Bringing together fruit from Estate vineyards and top independent growers, this wine embodies the flavourful complexity of Napa Valley wine growing, while offering a seamless balance between fruit, oak and tannins. To add nuance to classic Cabernet elements of currant, cherry and plum, the blend also includes Merlot, yielding a layered wine that is approachable in its youth, yet worthy of cellaring.

"Delicate and balanced with blueberry, currant and light stone character. Full to medium body, firm tannins and a fresh finish. Drink or hold."

Dominus Estate "Napanook" 2011
$89.95 per bottle, cases of 12

One of Napa Valley's "Super Seconds" and one of the most memorable labels you're likely to find, Napanook is one of Napa Valley's most historically significant vineyards, and the source of Napanook and Dominus.

"The 2011 Napanook is deep, rich and intense for the year. Plums, mocha, spices, licorice all flesh out in an inviting wine to drink now and over the next few years. The 2011 has no hard edges or greenness, but the medium-bodied structure suggests it is best enjoyed sooner rather than later. The blend is 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Petit Verdot and 8% Cabernet Franc."

O'Shaughnessy Estate
Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon 2012
$156.95 per bottle, cases of 6

The holidays are a great time to really pull out all the stops and if you plan to, the following two wines are sure to impress.  Give the gift of memories swimming in deep, velvety, spectacular Napa Valley red wine.

"Dark red cherry, plum, smoke, new leather, tobacco, cloves and mocha meld together in the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain. Rich, ample and textured, the 2012 is full of intensity. The contours are quite soft, though, which makes the 2012 unusually gentle and tamed for a young Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon. The radiant, explosive finish alone is hugely appealing. In 2012, winemaker Sean Capiaux used all seven Bordeaux varieties in the blend. 2017 - 2032"

95 points, Antonio Galloni vinous.com, Dec 2014

"Composed of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Malbec and a handful of other varietals, The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain exhibits an opaque purple colour as well as abundant aromas of wet gravel, lead pencil shavings, blueberries and mulberries, a dense, opulent, full-bodied mouthfeel, sweet tannin and a terrific texture and finish. Drink this impressive effort over the next 15-20 years."

Relent bttl

Shafer "Relentless" 2012
$147.95 per bottle, cases of 12

"...another sensational wine from the Shafer portfolio is the Relentless. This has been a terrific Rhône Ranger offering since it was first released in 1999, and it continues to be primarily a 89%-97% Syrah blend and the rest Petite Sirah. Like the Hillside Select, it's aged 32 months in new oak prior to being bottled. I have no idea how long these wines will last, but they're fabulous to drink young, and certainly 20-25 years is well within reach of just about every top vintage of Relentless."
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, Oct 2014

"The 2012 Syrah Relentless, which has not yet been bottled, is a blend of 89% Syrah and 11% Petite Sirah. In keeping with this amazing year, it's full-bodied, juicy, succulent, flamboyant, with blueberry and blackberry fruit galore, lots of glycerin and a massive mouthfeel, but no heaviness or astringency characterize this stunning wine. This should turn out to be a great, great Rhône Ranger when released in a year or so."
