"Classic" Wines for Sharing
with Friends and Family

December 2015

Where does a year go!?  We're back in the holiday season and whether you're looking for wine to give as gifts or for parties, we can help you find the right wines for your budget and palate.

Here is a small selection of what we consider "Classic" wines - those regions that always deliver exceptional quality like Sancerre, Vouvray, Valpolicella and old-vine Cabernet from Calistoga. Of course we have many more to choose from. We have over 150 wineries in our portfolio and over 300 wines available at all times.

I also have small quantities of some large-format wines from Napa including Dominus 2011, and Chateau Montelena "The Montelena Estate" Cabernet Sauvignon 2011.  Please call me to discuss those, 647 955 8872.

Please visit our website for all the wines, catalogues and reviews.  Our prices are published per-bottle, taxes included and we sell only by the unmixed case lot.

Please forward this along to any of your colleagues or friends that also love great wine!

Sincerely,
Chris.

Zardetto "Refosso" 2014
Conegliano Valdobbiadene
Prosecco Superiore DOCG
$20.95 per bottle, cases of 12

In need of bubbles?  This is a gorgeous, minerally Prosecco from the eastern hills of the Valdobbiadene zone.

On the nose you'll find rich citrus and fresh herb aromas with nice hints of bread crust. This wine gives unique fruity aromas that bring to memory wild strawberries.  On the palate this Conegliano Valdobbiadene shows great energy. The taste is broad, fruity and well balanced. The style is complete, tasty, clean and persistent.

This 2014 has yet to be reviewed, but JamesSuckling.com recently awarded the 2013 vintage 92 points, "This is a finely textured Prosecco with subtle pear, lemon and mineral aromas and flavours. Medium body, lovely fruit and acidity. Harmonious Prosecco. Drink now." (Oct 2015)

Chiquet NV

Gaston Chiquet
Blanc de Blancs d'A˙ NV Grand Cru
$62.95 per bottle, cases of 6

Gaston Chiquet is best known for being the first of the Grower-Producers in Champagne, but this particular wine really should be their claim to fame.

A 100% Chardonnay grown in the Grand Cru-rated village of A˙ - where Pinot Noir reigns supreme.  Sommelier extraordinaire Rajat Parr calls this "highly notable, a wine that every sommelier and serious wine drinker should know about" Secrets of the Sommeliers, 2010.

"Green-gold. Sexy mineral-tinged aromas of ripe pear, nectarine, orange and buttered toast, with a hint of smokiness in the background; seems like there's some oak here but there's none. Smooth and fleshy on entry, then tighter in the middle, offering intense citrus and orchard fruit flavours underscored by a gingery nuance. Closes sappy and long, with building floral character and firm mineral bite. This Champagne was made entirely from 2009 fruit but belies that vintage's warm growing conditions."
91 points, Josh Raynolds  vinous.com, Jan 2015

"A chalky version, with bright acidity and a lively bead framing hints of pineapple, pastry cream, glazed apricot and fresh ginger. Focused and finely knit. Disgorged October 2013. Drink now through 2020."
91 points, Wine Spectator, Nov 2014

Le Haut Lieu

Domaine Huet Vouvray
"Le Haut Lieu" Sec 2013
$40.95 per bottle, cases of 12

Domaine Huet is widely considered the greatest producer in Vouvray, where they work with Chenin Blanc and produce every style of wine from this dry, full bodied version to sparkling and botrytis-affected dessert wines.

If you are looking for an alternative to Chardonnay, but still want a fruity, full bodied white, look no further.  It makes a great accompaniment to grilled fish, seafoods and salads. It can be cellared for 10 to 15 years.

"This is very expressive, with chutney, warmed apple, piecrust, orange blossom and honeysuckle notes all woven together and carrying through the quinine-fueled finish. Shows superb density and length for the vintage. Best from 2015 through 2022."
92 points, Wine Spectator, Dec 2014

Domaine Luneau Papin
Muscadet sur lie "Pierre de la Grange" Vieilles Vignes 2014
$22.95 per bottle, cases of 12

Forty-five year old south facing vines grow on on the micaschist of Le Landreau in the village of the same name.  2014 was a very good Muscadet vintage, yielding plenty of ripe fruit with good acids. This wine often shocks people who are more used to the blandness of many Muscadets.

To the eye this wine seems to glow from within and the palate is a rich and inviting mix of ripe melon and crisp apple. The impact of the soil is abundantly clear, imparting a particular mineral character to its structure. Perhaps with the exception of Champagne you will be hard pressed to find anything better to accompany oysters. Its purity of flavour, fine weight and freshness also make it a superb aperitif.  If you can, bury a few bottles for up to a decade and drink almost like mature Burgundy.

Pelle new label

Domaine Henry Pellé
Sancerre "La Croix au Garde" 2014
750ml $33.95/bottle, cases of 12
375ml $19.95/bottle, cases of 12

"This is the Ingrid Bergman of Sancerres - ravishing, polished and effortlessly elegant. In great years, besides having perfect tension between acidity and fruit, the wine has a unique kind of purity and clarity, with absolutely vivid smokey/minerally flavours. Pellé himself was considered one of the masters of the Sauvignon Blanc grape, and now his family carries on, making wines that are highly admired. The Pellé estate is perhaps best known for its extraordinary, rich, dramatic Menetou-Salon, which is also where the estate is located."

Mer Soleil "Silver" Chardonnay 2013
$29.95 per bottle, cases of 12

The name Mer Soleil is synonymous with the complex, oaky, toasty, buttery style of California Chardonnay that we adore, but what would the wine be like without that layer of oak flavour? Well, this is it. A pure concrete-fermented un-oaked version of the famous Chardonnay. It shows a pure, minerally Monterey style, with vibrant fruit and acidity.

This wine opens with a mineral-driven nose with citrus notes shining through. Cement tank fermentation and ageing bring out aromas reminiscent of the first rain of the season or a wet rock. Soft and round on the entry with an acidic backbone tells you that these grapes are grown in a cooler climate.  The mid-palate reveals ripe fruit such as lemons, gooseberries and grapefruits. It finishes dry while the acidity comes and goes in a balanced fashion. Laser sharp minerality carries through from start to finish on both palate and aroma.

Blue Mountain Okanagan Valley Chardonnay 2013
$24.95 per bottle, cases of 12

The 2013 Chardonnay which is grown at the estate in Okanagan Falls displays complex flavours of orchard fruit, mineral, citrus and toast with a fresh yet rich lemony character, as well as complexing anise notes on the finish. The structure of the wine will allow it to age beautifully for 4-6 years.

The 2013 is not yet reviewed, but the 2012 received the following:

"Medium-bodied and firm in the best sense, this serious white displays peach and tropical fruit drizzled with toffee, lifted by lemony acidity and subtle toastiness. Marvellous."
91 points, Beppi Crosariol, Globe and Mail, April 30, 2014

Case Vecie

Brigaldara Valpolicella "Case Vecie" 2013
$18.95 per bottle, cases of 12

"Success struck the Valpolicella area like lightning out of the clear blue sky, sometimes surprising the producers themselves, who were suddenly thrust into a new and complex world. Stefano Cesari has been able to handle the situation with calm and lucidity. In fact, his operation is one of the most interesting local estates today with excellent vineyards, a range of wines strongly rooted in tradition and, very importantly, fine quality that represents really good value for the money."
Gambero Rosso 2010

Hailing from the heart of the region, this wine is made from Corvina, Corvinone, and Rondinella grapes without the use of wood. It undergoes the appassimento process, on the skins of the house's newly fermented Amarone, which adds colour and increases the depth of flavour.

Medium colour with subtle sour cherry aromas, this is a medium-weight, softly tannic wine with zesty fruit flavours and a hint of bitter almond on the finish. A charming red that could be served at cellar temperature with a wide range of Italian dishes.

Pio Cesare Barbera d'Alba 2013
$28.95 per bottle, cases of 12

If you're looking for a rich, savoury red with excellent vivid fruit flavours and food-affinity, look no further.  You'll find blackberries in the aroma and a hint of toasted tobacco. It ages quite well.

The juice sees 15 days of skin contact in stainless steel temperature controlled fermenters.  Following fermentation the wine is moved into French oak for 18 months.  30% of the wine goes into medium-toasted barriques and 70% of the wine into 20 to 50 hectoliter casks.

Though the 2013 is not yet reviewed, the 2012 received 90 points from Antonio Galloni at vinous.com and the following note,
"The 2012 Barbera d'Alba is quite pretty. Bright red cherries, flowers, spices and mint all lift from the glass in a striking, perfumed Barbera long on class and personality. The flavours are precise and finely sculpted throughout."

Falchini Chianti Colli Senesi
"Titolato Colombaia" 2012
$19.95 per bottle, cases of 12

San Gimignano is one of the most enchanting cities in Tuscany. It is called the "City of the Beautiful Towers".  One of the most respected winemakers there, in particular because of the world class quality of his wines, was the late Riccardo Falchini.  His first vineyard was planted in 1968 and today Falchini can boast the finest and most modern equipment and techniques in the area.

Falchini is a member of the "Titolati" (the word means "The Selected"), an association of enlightened producers that reinforce the highest of standards that must be adhered to in the identified vineyards and the demanding norms of vinification that will result in the optimum achievement in the wine offered.

Falchini's consulting enologist is Giacomo Tachis, creator of Tignanello, Sassicaia, Ornellaia, Solaia, and other great Italian wines. Falchini has won innumerable awards and commendations for their wines. Riccardo's sons Michael and Christopher now carry on their father's legacy.

Graillot_C-H

Alain Graillot Crozes-Hermitage 2013
$40.95 per bottle, cases of 12

Alain Graillot has proved beyond doubt that it is possible to make rich wines from the flat lands surrounding Hermitage. His wines are difficult to resist young, but patient cellaring for at least 5 years is well-rewarded.

"One of the reference points for top-flight Crozes Hermitage, as well as a small amount of St. Joseph, these wines are all aged in small oak. They represent exceptional bargains in top vintages."
Robert Parker's Wine Buyer's Guide #7

"(made with 100% whole clusters): Bright purple. Energetic black raspberry, cherry, Asian spices and olive paste on the seductively perfumed nose. Fleshy and expansive in the mouth, offering juicy red and dark berry liqueur flavours and a suave note of candied violet. Picks up spiciness and smokiness with air and finishes on a sweet dark berry note, with good nervy cut and floral persistence. Maxime Graillot told me that this wine is made from a site in Chassis that was planted 45 years ago and has never been treated with any chemicals."

Capiaux "Chimera"
Russian River Valley Pinot Noir 2013
$53.95 per bottle, cases of 12

When he's not busy producing amazing Cabernets for O'Shaughnessy Estate Sean Capiaux, who also serves as COO, produces single-vineyard expressions of some of California's top vineyards under his own eponymous label.  "Chimera" is his only blend, and in 2013 it is predominantly from vineyards in the Russian River Valley.

"Bright cranberry, spice, red cherry, mint and cinnamon lift from the glass in the 2013 Chimera. The flavours are bright, high-toned and lifted throughout, with lovely energy and tension throughout. This is a terrific introduction to Sean Capiaux's wines. The Chimera is raised in 350 litre, thick-staved barrels, which naturally allows for less exchange with oxygen than standard barrels. 2015-2020."

90 points, Antonio Galloni  vinous.com, Jan 2015

Buehler_Cabernet

Buehler Vineyards
Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2013
$46.95 per bottle, cases of 12

Robert Parker recently commented on the red wines from northern California in 2013,
"The consistency in quality, depth of flavour, texture, freshness, vibrancy and richness was absolutely mind-boggling. This could turn out to be one of the most epic and awesome vintages the North Coast of California has ever produced. The wines are more tightly coiled and present themselves with more closed personalities than their 2012 counterparts, but they are by no means inaccessible. They are powerful, rich and concentrated, extremely well-delineated, and will be extremely long-lived, eclipsing even the aging potential of the 2012s."  Wine Advocate, Oct 30, 2015

Buehler Vineyards' modus operandi has always been to produce wines that punch well above their weight and the 2013 vintage is a great vintage to test their skill. 70 % of the fruit is from long-term contract growers and the balance comes from the estate which sits near Conn Valley.

"Buehler's 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is dark, juicy and bold, with plenty of dark red cherry, plum, mocha, spice and leather. Drink this attractive, mid-weight Cabernet over the next few years. 2017-2025"
90 points, Antonio Galloni  vinous.com, Oct 2015

Duckhorn "Three Palms Vineyard"
Cabernet Sauvignon 2012
$147.95 per bottle, cases of 6

One of Calistoga's legendary vineyards, Three Palms is revered for its history and its benchmark wines. The team at Duckhorn has crafted a vineyard-designated Merlot from this property since the inaugural vintage in 1978. Throughout the years, the Cabernet Sauvignon from Three Palms has always played an integral role in the final blend, adding richness and depth. For the first time ever we have been allocated a small amount for the Ontario market.

The 2012 growing season offered near-perfect growing conditions. Though spring was rainy, late spring and summer were warm and dry with very few heat spikes.  Slightly cooler than average weather in September and October allowed for greatly extended hang time. Harvest was 2-3 weeks later than average, and the grapes arrived at the winery in pristine condition.

From its layered aromas of mahogany, marionberry, garam masala and flint to its flavours of blackberry, dark chocolate, wet stone and anise, this is a fascinating wine, with a rich, fleshy midpalate and a long thought provoking finish.

The final blend is 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot, 1% Malbec.
