"Anytime" and "Party" Wines

Tiefenbrunner logo

Tiefenbrunner
Pinot Grigio 2014 Alto Adige
$19.95 per bottle, cases of 12

Tiefenbrunner has consistently crafted this Pinot Grigio vintage to vintage, which has lead to it becoming our most popular wine!

This pale straw wine shows pretty aromas of honeysuckle and white peach which delight the nose. Zingy aromas of fresh apple, pineapple and orange zest are offered on the palate, with an element of bitter almond layered into the long finish. The fruit exhibits a wonderful impression of ripeness throughout. A fragrant, mouthwatering, rich wine that maintains good poise.

"Lightly floral and crisp, this racy white offers a minerally base note and a lively profile of lemon zest, peach skin and pickled ginger. Drink now through 2018. 3,000 cases imported."

Grayson Chardonnay

Grayson Cellars California Chardonnay 2014
$20.95 per bottle, cases of 12

Grayson Cellars is one of California's most exciting "virtual wineries".  What does that mean?  They are not an estate per se, but rather a company lead by Mike O'Connell and winemaker Larry Levin who buy fruit from around northern California and craft super-value, true to classic California-styled wines.

Robert Parker listed the 2014 Chardonnay for the 11th straight time on his list of "Top California Value Wines" in Aug 2015 and added this lovely tasting note:

"Grayson's 2014 Chardonnay is 100% Chardonnay and shows loads of tropical fruit, especially mango, pineapple and tangerine, crisp acidity, and an elegant, mid-weight feel, with no oak noticeable. Drink it over the next year."

Carre de Cesar

Château de Maligny
Chablis 2014 "Carré de César"

$27.70 per 750 ml bottle, cases of 12
$16.95 per 375 ml bottle, cases of 12

Château de Maligny is owned by the Durup family who have lived in the village of Maligny since the 15th century. The Durup's properties cover more than 50 hectares in the commune of Maligny and more than 100 in other parts of Chablis. It is now the largest estate in the appellation.

This particular Chablis is a "best selection" from vines in the Estates' surrounding vineyards.  The wine is impeccably clean, fruity, almost flowery, and stylish with characteristic mineral and apple flavours. The brisk acidity gives verve.

One of the great pairings is Château de Bourgogne cheese and Chablis - the cracking acidity of the wine and the overt creaminess of the cheese is just outrageous.  What a great winter-time treat!

Laurent B

Domaine Brusset Côtes du Rhône
"Laurent Brusset" 2014
$19.25 per bottle, cases of 12

A blend of Grenache, Syrah, Carignane, and Cinsault. It is remarkably appealing. This surprisingly rich, round, warm, medium bodied Côtes du Rhône also shows moderate tannin and good balancing acidity with a long, dry finish. Enjoyable now, it will sustain over the next five to six years.  Definitely a find and a little gem at the price, this has been my "house red" for many years.

The 2014 is not yet rated, but the 2013 received the following:

"The 2013 Côtes du Rhône Laurent B has superb purity and freshness in its dark cherry, graphite, leather and dried spice-driven bouquet. Tasting like a mini-Gigondas, with medium-bodied richness and depth, and a focused, masculine feel on the palate, drink it over the coming 3-5 years."

Altesino Rosso

Altesino Rosso di Toscana 2014
$21.95 per bottle, cases of 12

Why not look to one of the world's most respected wineries to craft your "every day" wine?  This gorgeous red is made from 80% Sangiovese and 20% Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes that are hand-harvested from the Altesino, Pianezzine, and Castelnuovo dell'Abate vineyards.

It is made to be enjoyed upon release and over the following 1-2 years.  Fermentation and maturation in stainless steel tanks produces a supple wine with excellent balance that is very easy to appreciate.  It shows a vibrant ruby red colour and inviting aromas of ripe berries and forest fruits.

Angeline California Pinot Noir 2013

$22.95 per 750 ml bottle,
cases of 12
$13.45 per 375 ml bottle,
cases of 12

Angeline wines are made by Martin Ray winery from fruit sourced throughout California's prime Pinot Noir producing regions, predominantly Russian River Valley, Sonoma County and Central California.  The same talented winemakers that produce Martin Ray's wines are in control here, and the polish, silkiness and bright clean flavours they want the wine to show are evident.

This Pinot Noir is really great for the price.  It's got a lovely bright colour and clear flavours of cherries and raspberries, vanilla and citrus.  There is a gentle earthiness, as one would hope for,  and rooibos tea and sweet toasty oak nuances in the finish.

Astrolabe "Awatere Valley"
Sauvignon Blanc 2014
$25.95 per bottle, cases of 12

You've had the "Province" Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc from Astrolabe, now try something new!  The "Valley" series of wines from Astrolabe provide focus and clarity on Marlborough's fast-emerging sub-regions.

The dry Awatere Valley has a more extreme climate than most of the Marlborough region which surrounds it. It is a much drier region with a variety of soils, very little water and a long growing season. As a result the vines struggle more than in Marlborough and because of this the grapes are generally smaller and flavours are more intense.

On the nose this wine bursts forth with notes of blackcurrant, lime, lemongrass and passionfruit. It is medium-bodied with flavours of currants and citrus, dried herbs and it finishes taut and minerally.

Beran California Zinfandel 2012
$27.95 per bottle, cases of 12

After many years spent making Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon with his father at Caymus Vineyards, Joe Wagner has begun his  newest venture - Beran Zinfandel.

The Caymus Zinfandel comes from Napa Valley, while Beran is sourced in Sonoma County and Lake County.  Sonoma County grows the more aromatic, claret-like Zinfandels while Lake County, which is further inland, is a warmer region where vineyards produce bigger, richer fruit.

2012 is an almost flawless vintage across northern California, and this wine is a ripe, dark Zinfandel, medium to full-bodied, richly fruity in a blueberry and currant sort of way, it is spicy, earthy,  boasts a supple texture, and a round, generous finish.

If you like the Caymus Zinfandel, this would be a fun wine for you to try.

Mer Soleil
Santa Barbara County Reserve Chardonnay 2012
$36.95 per bottle, cases of 12

A new wine to the stable of Wagner Family's offerings is the "Santa Barbara Reserve".  It is lusher and denser than the Santa Lucia Highlands Reserve", given its provenance in a warmer region.

It has a weighty texture, one of the key distinguishing features that makes it a compelling new wine in the portfolio. Like the original Reserve, this bottling is fermented and aged in older French oak barrels to prevent excessive wood flavours from penetrating the wine. Only a portion goes through malolactic fermentation to ensure the wine's acidity, and hand stirring of the barrels ensures its creaminess.

"Offers a generous mix of tropical fruit, with guava, pineapple and mango flavours accented by melon, spice and floral notes. Well-focused and shaded by light toasty oak, this gains depth and nuance on the creamy finish. Drink now. 6,835 cases made."

Premium Selections

Coeur du Cuvee

Champagne Vilmart & Cie.
"Coeur du Cuvée" 2007
estimated $161.95 per bottle, cases of 6
arriving late November

Vilmart excels in less-than-perfect vintages.  Their 2001, a much maligned year, is to this day one of my "top 5 wines" that I have ever drank.  An absolutely magical wine that I remember vividly to this day and this 2007 may prove to be another vintage to fall in love with.

"Another gorgeous wine, the 2007 Coeur de Cuvée is rich, ample and totally seductive. In 2007, the Coeur de Cuvée is intensely aromatic and highly expressive, with striking textural resonance throughout. Creamy and spherical through to the finish, the 2007 is a model of elegance and sumptuousness. The 2007 can be enjoyed today for its generous personality or cellared for another decade-plus. Disgorged March 2014. 2016 - 2027."
94+ points, Antonio Galloni  vinous.com, July 2015

"This will continue Laurent's [Champs]  streak of making the best wine in Champagne from "difficult" vintages, and indeed this is as good as the GREAT 2001-and maybe better. It brings a nettley green sting to the magnificent grace and concentration of this ever-improving wine. The length is replete with pepper, leather and verbena; the salt and stocky savour are mind-bending - dried porcini, rare duck breast, clove and satsumas, all into a seemingly endless finish you want scoop back out of your mouth and drink again."

3 of 3 stars, Terry Thiese, 2015

Flaccianello

Fontodi "Flaccianello della Pieve" IGT 2011
$116.95 per bottle, cases of 6

First released in 1981, Flaccianello was one of the first Super-Tuscans produced solely from Sangiovese grapes.  From 1981 to 2001 Flaccianello represented a single-vineyard of the same name.  In the 2001 vintage it became a best-barrel-of-the-estate selection, catapulting the quality to where it is today - one of Italy's greatest wines.

The estate is completely organic and the vineyards sit in a natural amphitheatre-type formation, with a perfect southerly aspect.  The wine is refined by maturing it in  in 225 litre Allier oak barriques for 18 months followed by a year in bottle before release.

Flaccianello seems annually to be listed in Wine Spectator's Top 25 Wines of the Year - #14 in 2014, #25 in 2012, #8 in 2010, #8 in 2009 and #10 in 2004.

"The 2011 Flaccianello della Pieve is 100% Sangiovese aged 24 months in new French oak and two months in large oak cask. I'm not sure how Fontodi does it, but this edition of Flaccianello is simply beautiful. It is a seamless expression with lingering tones of red cherry, coffee, spice, truffle and red rose that flow harmoniously into unison. In the mouth, the wine shows great opulence and textural richness that is pushed forward by the stylistic softness of the tannins and the wine's inner freshness. Pretty menthol tones appear on the finish. Drink: 2015-2030."

Jasmin Côte Rôtie 2013
$74.95 per bottle, cases of 6

A truly artisan wine, Patrick Jasmin farms his family's 5 hectares of almost 60-year old Syrah and Viognier on some of the Côte Rôtie's most precarious slopes.  This is back-breaking labour, but he loves it.

Following the harvest by hand, a long maceration of the skins and juice is aided by pressing by foot.  Once fermented the wines are racked into barrique for malolactic fermentation and then blended.  They mature in a selection of both Burgundian barrels (228, 300 and 400 litres) and in 600 litre demi-muids. 25-30% of the oak is new, depending on the year.  These vessels are use for 10 years before replacement.  The wines are unfiltered, unfined and age for 2 years in bottle.

"Ruby-red. Aromas of cherry pit, blackberry and licorice, with a smoky quality emerging as the wine opens in the glass. Fleshy and broad for a Jasmin wine, showing good heft to its juicy bitter cherry and blackcurrant flavours. A mineral element adds lift to the smoky finish, which is framed by silky, even tannins."

O'Shaughnessy Estate
Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon 2012
$156.95 per 750 ml bottle, cases of 6

"Dark red cherry, plum, smoke, new leather, tobacco, cloves and mocha meld together in the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain. Rich, ample and textured, the 2012 is full of intensity. The contours are quite soft, though, which makes the 2012 unusually gentle and tamed for a young Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon. The radiant, explosive finish alone is hugely appealing. In 2012, winemaker Sean Capiaux used all seven Bordeaux varieties in the blend.2017 - 2032"
95 points, Antonio Galloni vinous.com, Dec 2014

"Composed of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Malbec and a handful of other varietals, The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain exhibits an opaque purple colour as well as abundant aromas of wet gravel, lead pencil shavings, blueberries and mulberries, a dense, opulent, full-bodied mouthfeel, sweet tannin and a terrific texture and finish. Drink this impressive effort over the next 15-20 years."

Cain "Five" 2010
$176.95 per bottle, cases of 6

"I have made a pilgrimage here because a bottle of 1990 Cain Five made from Spring Mountain fruit remains the single-most delicious California Meritage I've ever tasted."
Jeff Cox, The Wine News, 2007

In the world of Napa Cabernet, Cain stands apart. The Cain Vineyard especially stands alone, thus the Cain Five is unlike anything else. What are the hallmarks of the unique character of the Cain Five? Undoubtedly, they are the complex herbal-floral bouquet (most unusual for Cabernet), and the firm structure wrapped in exceptionally fine tannins.

The wine begs to be compared not with other Cabernets, but with many of the great red wines of the world - especially from cooler climates, such as Burgundy, Barolo, and Côte Rôtie.

Dominus

Dominus Estate "Dominus" 2011
$206.95 per 750 ml bottle, wood cases of 6
$427.95 per 1500 ml bottle, wood cases of 3

"Christian Moueix and his team at Dominus have experience with rainy vintages in Bordeaux. They also farm a site that is particularly well adapted to draining excess water. So they produced a remarkable 2011, a late vintage challenged by rain close to harvest. It's proof that a challenge met can create something sublime-like this floral, red-raspberry-scented vintage of Dominus. It's a tense chord of flavour incorporating green herb, tobacco, cassis and raspberry in a lasting harmony. The sophisticated structure suggests it will age with grace, while the gentleness of that structure will make it accessible along the way. A great bottle for lamb."
94 points, Wine & Spirits magazine, Sept 2014

"I slightly underestimated this wine early in the year. The result of a cold vintage, yes, but Christian Moueix and winemaker Tod Mostero brought forth a classic, seamless Dominus: dark, pure plum and cassis, a benchland dust, graphite and charred leaves. Depth, purity and perfect focus."

Quintessa

Quintessa 2012 Napa Valley Red Wine
$209.95 per bottle, cases of 6

Quintessa sits on 280 acres in the heart of Rutherford, 170 acres are planted to grapes, but the property encompasses 26 contiguous vineyard blocks on such diverse terroir that 40 different lots are produced.

The wine is a Bordeaux varietal blend, principally Cabernet Sauvignon, but the composition changes each year to ensure the best possible Quintessa is made.  The estate has been farmed biodynamically since day one.  This truly is special terroir.

Winemaker Charles Thomas' career includes 15 years as oenologist and assistant winemaker at Opus One, 8 years directing the winemaking and viticulture at Cardinale and 5 years at Rudd.  He joined Quintessa in 2007.

"Fabulous aromas of blackberry, tile and clay. Porcini undertones. Full-bodied, tight and polished with refined tannins and a long, long finish. Racy and beautiful. So long and linear. Goes on for minutes."
