Chiquet NV

Champagne Gaston Chiquet
"Blanc de Blancs d'Aÿ" Brut NV
$54.95 per bottle, cases of 6

The "grower" champagne movement has really taken hold, as the public discovers that this is where the best quality to value lies.  These are houses with decades, if not centuries of viticultural history with generations of family members at the helm.  They grow their own fruit, and produce their own wines.  Champagne Gaston Chiquet is the oldest and among the best of these wineries.

The Blanc de Blancs d'Aÿ is a particularly important wine, as explained here by the sommeliers' sommelier Raj Parr.

"Nicolas Chiquet is among the greatest of all the grower-producers........The house of Chiquet, which first planted vines in 1746, was also, in 1935, the first grower to begin to produce, instead of just sell grapes.

Chiquet makes a wine that is highly notable, a wine that every sommelier and serious wine drinker should know about, Blanc de Blanc d'Aÿ.

What is significant about this Chardonnay is that it comes from a Grand Cru-rated village that is known for its Pinot Noir. This is a reversal that makes little sense: why make Chardonnay from a place that is universally praised for Pinot? The wine tells you why.

It is from a very old vineyard, and the wine proves the point about terroir in Champagne: it is not at all an expression of Chardonnay, but an expression of this place. If you are a terroir doubter, game over. Terroir clearly exists, and this wine proves it.

Heavier and richer than other blanc de blancs, it drinks like a pinot noir - robust and juicy, speaking of berries, quince and honey - even though it is not."

Rajat Parr, Secrets of the Sommeliers, 2010 page 161.

Emmolo Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2013
$31.20 per bottle, cases of 12

Cheryl Emmolo's family has been making wine in Napa Valley since 1944.  Cheryl's daughter is Jenny Wagner of Wagner Family Wines (Caymus, Belle Glos, Mer Soleil, Cunundrum) and Jenny is currently at the helm, producing ravishing Sauvignon Blanc and rich, ripe Merlot.

The 2013 vintage offers a firm acidity balanced with a stark, steely flavour. Aromas are fresh and clean, evoking the scent of early morning after a first rain, with a hint of honeysuckle and underlying notes of tangerine and wet stone. The wine enters the palate with a crisp yet soft quality, flowing into flavours of flower blossom and ending with a mouthwatering finish of fresh-squeezed grapefruit.  A long-lasting, zesty minerality leaves the sensation of both subtlety and brightness.

Jenny says of this wine, "I'm going after a subtle wine that is more minerality-driven than fruit-driven. In my view, with Sauvignon Blanc, less is more."

Blue Mountain Vineyards and Cellars
Okanagan Valley Chardonnay 2013
$24.95 per bottle, cases of 12

Estate grown, elegantly stylish Chardonnay for $25?  Yes please!

The Mavety family have crafted some of British Columbia's most collectable and beautiful wines for 25 years and some of the most sought after fruit for over 40.

These Chardonnay vines are 24 years old and grow in complex granite rich soils.  More than half the juice is fermented in older oak and sees some ageing on the lees.  The remaining juice is fermented in stainless steel to retain bright acidity.  The blending is the art, and the finished result is harmonious and complex.

The 2013 Chardonnay displays myriad flavours of citrus and toast with a fresh yet rich lemony character, and anise notes on the finish. The structure of the wine will allow it to age beautifully for 4-6 years.

Buehler_Chard

Buehler Vineyards
Russian River Valley Chardonnay 2013
$30.95 per bottle, cases of 12

Buehler Vineyards, although located in the foothills of Napa Valley's Howell Mountain, sources its fruit for this lovely Chardonnay from two vineyards in Sonoma's Russian River Valley called Wood and River.

This Chardonnay displays abundant floral/stone fruit aromas lightly accented by toasty, graham cracker sur-lie qualities.  The mouthfeel is creamy and full but the natural acidity of the Russian River fruit carries this velvet textured package to a long, clean finish.

"The fresh grass, honeydew, honeysuckle and subtle pear and citrus notes are elegant and graceful, smooth in texture and long on the finish. Drink now. 20,000 cases made."

Querciabella "Mongrana" IGT 2009
$25.95 per bottle, cases of 12

Agricola Querciabella in Radda, Chianti is an exquisite estate focused on exploring the crus and terroirs of Chianti Classico.  They farm using biodynamic methods - in tune with the earth and the universe.

From the vineyards in the coastal Maremma region Querciabella produces Mongrana, a "super Tuscan" blend of Sangiovese, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon.  This is a supple and balanced wine, which at almost six years old is in its prime drinking window now.

"Querciabella stands head and shoulders above any other estate in Chianti Classico. It's as simple as that."

Antonio Galloni, vinous.com, Sept 2014

"Clear aromas of blueberry and light jam. Full bodied, with silky tannins and a citrus, plum and berry character. Rich yet balanced and very pretty. Drink now or hold."

Santa Barbara Winery
Santa Ynez Valley Syrah 2012
$28.95 per bottle, cases of 12

"Central Coast Winery of the Year"
2015 New York International Wine Competition

The first winery in Santa Barbara County to open after Prohibition, was by a Canadian, no less!  Montreal born architect Pierre Lafond began in 1962, and more than 50 years later Santa Barbara County is one of California's top quality wine regions.

Sixty-two percent of this Syrah is from the Santa Rita Hills appellation, a cool climate sub-appellation that produces Syrah with overt white pepper and lavender spice. When combined with the 38% from the warmer Joughin Vineyard near Los Olivos, which contributes jammier dark red fruit, we have a very complex Santa Ynez Valley Syrah.

Saint Jean du Barroux
"L'Argile" Cotes du Ventoux 2011
$37.95 per bottle, cases of 12

Only 4 cases remaining

Phillipe Gimel's small 15 hectare estate, situated between les Dentelles and Mt. Ventoux, is one of those exciting complexities of fractured earth that winemakers seek out.

It gives life to old bush vines of Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault and Carignan.  All harvesting and sorting is done by hand, multiple passes through the organic vineyard ensures only the best fruit makes it into the tank.  His tonnage is fantastically low, a little over 1 ton per acre.  This fanatical attention to detail is why his wines sell out every vintage and are hailed by critics.  His wines see no oak and the impact on the palate reflects that.

This is elegant and focused.  A seamless wine.  Provençal markets and spring flowers followed by kirsch, and raspberries.  The finish builds and then carries on and on.

Amavi Cellars
Walla Walla Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2012
$48.95 per bottle, cases of 12

Amavi is the "sister" winery of the famous Pepper Bridge.  They share the same state of the art facility; the same winemaker; the same team; many of the same vineyards, some of the best in Washington; Amavi sees a little less oak, is released a little earlier and is made for slightly earlier consumption.

Some of the best value Cabernet Sauvignons in the United States come out of Washington, and Amavi is a great example.

"The 2012 Walla Walla Cabernet Sauvignon is an excellent value. Raised in mostly French oak (26% new), it offers classic Cabernet green herbs, dark fruit and lead pencil shavings to go with a medium-bodied, full, layered and balanced feel on the palate. There's a touch of dry tannin here, yet it should still drink nicely through 2022."

Ridge Vineyards
Sonoma County "Three Valleys"
Zinfandel 2012
$37.95 per bottle, cases of 12

The first blended-vineyard wine that Ridge ever made was born in the 2001 vintage.  At the time it was three vineyards but now seven in Sonoma County contribute to the 2013.  Zinfandel determines the wine's varietal character; old-vine Carignane contributes bright fruit and acidity; Petite Sirah spice, depth of colour, and firm tannins.

This wine is aged in 100% air-dried American oak barrels for 10 months (10% new, 32% one and two years old, and 58% three to six years old).  Ridge Vineyards is a leader in the use of American oak barriques, which contribute different flavours and aromas than French oak.  It is a rich, yet easy drinking Zinfandel, lower in alcohol than most at 14.4%.

It is medium-garnet in colour. It has a briery, cherry/plum nose with aromas of clay or mineral, dried herbs, and coconut-oak spice, an elegant fresh-raspberry entry; soft, textured tannins and sweet oak. The finish is lovely.

Peay Vineyards
"Scallop Shelf" Pinot Noir 2013
$101.95 per bottle, cases of 6

We have had the pleasure of representing the Peay family's wines since their very early days, because of this we receive very small allocations to offer our clients. Distribution of almost all their wines is limited to mailing lists and fine dining restaurants.

The 2013 "Scallop Shelf" is a vivacious, striking Pinot Noir singing with aromas of Asian spice, roses, plum and black cherries.  The seamless palate has tension and energy.  With time the mid-palate will fill out and provide satiny pleasure for up to 10 years.

"Exceptional wines of rare precision and intensity."
Eric Asimov, The New York Times

Boudreaux_Cab_Sauv

Boudreaux Cellars
Washington Cabernet Sauvignon 2008
$89.95 per bottle, cases of 6

How does one describe or compare Washington Cabernets to their Napa Valley counterparts?  A sweeping generalization would be to say that Washington State wines tend to show more lead pencil, forest, bay - almost the aromatics of Napa mountain wines from Spring Mountain with the richness and power of wines from Napa's valley floor AVAs, like Oakville and Rutherford.

This particular winery offers tremendous value in an artisan wines sourced from the oldest rows of some of the Columbia Valley's best vineyards like Bacchus, Champoux, Klipsun and Pepper Bridge among others.

"A classic Cabernet, the 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon checks in as a blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc that spent 32 months in French oak. Gorgeous with its classy black currant, lead pencil shavings, bay leaf and crushed rock-like minerality on the nose, it flows onto the palate with a medium to full-bodied, elegant and textured mouthfeel that partially conceals sound underlying tannic grip and concentration. Staying fresh and lively, it can be enjoyed now, or cellared for over a decade. Drink now-2024."
